Rocket Raccoon’s Debut and Other Unexpected Tales

Key Comic Thursday Episode 9
This week on Key Comic Thursday, we’re diving into the comic vault to unearth some gems that might just make you chuckle, raise an eyebrow, or do a double take.
In 1987, Superman #4 decided Metropolis hadn’t seen enough action, introducing Bloodsport to the mix. Yes, a villain who makes weaponry appear out of thin air – because, in comic logic, carrying guns is just too mainstream. We zip back to 1967 with Detective Comics #363, where Batgirl graces Gotham with her presence for the second time. Apparently, once just wasn’t enough to convince Gotham’s criminals that librarians can kick butt too. Incredible Hulk #271 from 1982 gives us the first comic book appearance of Rocket Raccoon. Before he was guarding the galaxy, he was just a regular raccoon, you know, aside from the talking, shooting, and piloting a spaceship. Whisper #1 flew off the shelves in 1983, marking the origin and first appearance of Whisper from Capital Comics. Because every era needs its ninja drama, complete with mysterious powers and moral ambiguity. Longshot #1 from 1985, where Longshot makes his debut. With luck on his side and a mullet that defies gravity, he’s proof that the ’80s were a wild time for comic book fashion.
