Interview Funko – Chris Sully

Chris Sully and our website go back a long while. Well, not Trending Pop Culture, but InvestComics. We first met up with Chris and Steve doing their thing on their NerdFu Podcast quite a few years back. Not withstanding or any bias here for the sake of this interview, but The NerdFu Podcast is one of the premiere podcast out there. If you’re seeking a good listen about anything and everything regarding the pop culture scene, the NerdFu Podcast would be right up your alley. Be sure to check out their podcast by clicking right HERE.
So as the years lumbered on, Chris Sully moved on to a new gig a few years ago himself, but he still holds down the podcast with Steve on a regular basis. So, besides being a co-podcaster extraordinaire, Mr. Sully is the Marketing Manager at Funko. Let’s chat with Chris for a bit.

Trending Pop Culture: Hi Chris! We last met up in person at New York Comic Con 2017. Have you been busy since then at all? (sarcasm).
Chris Sully: That was just this past October, but it feels like at least 84 years.

TPC: So, let’s jump right in shall we? From the beginning, how old were you when you discovered you were into the superhero stuff/pop culture stuff?
CS: My first memories of being a “nerd/geek” started with movies (like Clash of the Titans, Gremlins, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters), toys/collectibles (like Masters of the Universe, Transformers, GI Joe & Star Wars) & video games (Atari 2600, Contra, Super Mario Bros., Kung Fu, etc.). It didn’t seem out of the ordinary at the time, because my dad was into the same things and so were all of my friends.

TPC: So now that you’re a tad older, what gets you pumped now?
CS: Many of the same things still resonate, but at least I don’t have to ask Mom & Dad for money or put things on my Christmas wish list any more. I still LOVE movies, collectibles and video games, but with the popularity of comic cons, I actually have the chance to go and meet some of my heroes (actors, designers, creators) in person, which I NEVER thought would be possible.

TPC: What’s your take on the whole Thanos thing? You buying it? Is everyone dead in your opinion? Who comes back, who doesn’t? What happens next in Mr. Sully’s Infinity War film?
CS: Not everyone that vanished is dead, but I do believe that Marvel is daring enough to shake things up by killing off a few key characters and/or changing up who plays them. I am all for it. As much as I love Thor, Captain America and Iron Man, the Marvel universe has 100s of characters to choose from and I would love to see them all on the big screen at some point.

TPC: Okay, let’s move on to you meeting up with Steve and this wonderful thing comes of it, NerdFu Podcast. How does this come about and what were your expectations? If any.
CS: Steve and I knew each other for a few years, but never really hung out…. until we started talking about movies and nerd culture. He called me up on day and said “You wanna go to SDCC?” I honestly thought that was an industry event and never even dreamed about going. Luckily, we timed it right, before tickets became impossible to get. It was 2012 and we were off to San Diego for something we couldn’t possibly be prepared for. We were blown away by the experience and the people that we met and decided that we need to make this our job! Some of our line friends (people we met in our first long SDCC lines and still talk to today) joked that Steve and I were pretty funny and should start our own podcast. That stuck with us and a few months later (April, 2013) we launched the Nerd Fu podcast and our website.

TPC: What are some of the highlights from this podcast venture….so far.
CS: Most importantly, the podcast gave us the chance to hang out and talk nerd. We decided early on that even if that’s all that ever happened, we would be fine with it. Luckily it turned into much more. Over the last 5 years, we’ve been to dozens of cons all over the country, met many of our favorite celebrities, podcasted with some of our favorite podcasters and made a TON of new friends/contacts. We’re approaching our 225th episode of the podcast and hope to continue on for years to come.

TPC: Do you guys record live and edit or do listeners get the raw material?
CS: We have recorded live a few times, including our 100th episode, with a small crowd. That was a lot of fun and something we would love to do again one day. We’ve appeared at several cons as part of a podcasting panel and even started our own intro to podcasting panel we call #ReadySetPodcast, which we hope to do at future conventions. For our weekly podcasts, there is very rarely any editing. We basically hit record and then stop when we’ve gone through all of our topics/notes. This was mainly out of necessity (since we had NO editing skills in the beginning), but it has really honed our ability to lead a conversation, without dead air or weird pauses. We’ve definitely improved over the years and hope to continue to do so.

TPC: With your busy schedule at Funko, when can fans expect podcast episodes to come out?
CS: For Nerd Fu, Steve and I have worked really hard to keep our standard schedule of a new episode every week, typically on Thursday or Friday. There have been a few weeks without an episode, but not many.

TPC: You’re an obvious fan of the comic book fandom. What are you picking up these days? Besides what InvestComics recommended all of those years for you. Now Trending PopCulture is doing that for ya, right? Right??
CS: I am definitely a fan of comics, but (and this part may not sit well with others) I have never been able to get into the format. I’ve tried, but just can’t get hooked. I DO love the artwork throughout the comics and especially the covers. To me, they are works of art and I treat them as such. I have always found the investment side of collecting fascinating and found Trending Pop Culture (InvestComics) when developing the idea of making my own investment protfolio of comics. The Top 5 from TPC has been amazing, turning me on to tons of great investments over the years.

Hermey

TPC: We’re going to assume you’re a collector of all things pop culture, including Funko POP!, correct? When did your affection towards the POP! figures begin?
CS: I bought my first Funko Pop! sometime in 2011, for my wife. It was the Hermey Pop! from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I stumbled onto it at a Target and really liked the style. Then I started finding others, like Marvel & Disney. When we attended SDCC in 2012, we walked into the booth and got a feel for how big the business could be, and started collecting more and more.

TPC: So, did you ever envision yourself actually holding a position at Funko? How does this come about?
CS: I really never thought it would be possible, but that didn’t stop me from dreaming and hoping. I worked in social media at a Fortune 100 company for a few years and it clearly was not the right fit. During that time, we had started Nerd Fu and gotten to know the marketing team at Funko. When I saw that they were hiring for a new marketing position, I immediately reached out! Because of the work we had done at Nerd Fu, they knew what I was capable of and gave me a shot. We picked up and moved from Texas and haven’t looked back since. It was one of the best decisions of my life.

TPC: Seeing you at New York Comic Con every year is extremely breathtaking to witness. The production and the constant teamwork is mindboggling. You have one of the, if not the busiest booths every single year. In which this happens at many shows, not just NYCC! What challenges accompany being the head marketer of the most sought-after items within the pop culture genre?
CS: I am just one member of an amazing team. We are blessed to have an amazing fan base (known as the Funko Funatics) and volunteers that come out to the conventions to help us stock and sell all of the exclusives. These conventions take months to plan for and require very long days at the cons, but it is all worth it. Seeing the happy fans come thru and leave with the giant blue bags of exclusives, then the photos that they share of their collection online makes it all worth while. If we didn’t work hard to make that happen and respect the fans, we wouldn’t be in the position that we are in. I happily jumped into the machine that was already running and I do whatever I can to keep it running.

TPC: What’s the one thing you hear the most from fans regarding the Funko line?
CS: Everyone wants to know when we’ll make __________ (insert fandom here). We are all fans of something and we all have a few movies, TV shows, video games, etc that we would love to have figures for. I’ve been lucky enough to see Firefly, The Goonies, Ghostbusters, Monsters, Inc and a plethora of my fandoms turned into Pop!s and I know that is what our fans want for their fandoms.

TPC: It’s absolutely no secret that there is a very deep aftermarket for Funko POP!’s. Baseball has the Honus Wagner card, Comics has Action Comics #1, finish this; Funko has……
CS: That is really a question for each fan. There are a few of the all-time greats, like the 2012 SDCC Gold Loki, the flocked Sulley, the Chrome Batman, etc., but I don’t think there is the ONE that everyone is after. Part of the beauty of creating figures for so many unique licenses is that fans have a huge field of figures to pick from. For me, it’s still the Gold Loki and the original flocked Chewbacca Pop!

Batman

Sulley

TPC: In your opinion, what is it about the figures that makes them so popular year in and year out? And what separates them from so many others trying to emulate the Funko brand?
CS: First and foremost – it’s the art! The Funko artists are amazing. The style of the figures is what first brought people to Funko. The licensing is the other important part. Funko has offered thousands of licensed products, including licenses that other companies might not focus on. As I me mentioned before, everyone is a fan of something and they want to add a figure or figures from that fandom to their collection/desk. The price point is also attractive. Pop!s typically retail for around $9.99, which is not a big ask, especially compared to other companies that make statues or figures that can run hundreds of dollars.

TPC: What can we expect in the future from Funko? Any surprises or we just going to get continued awesomeness from Funko?
CS: It’ll be straight-up awesomeness from here on out. But seriously, the licensing team and artists are continuing to push the boundaries of what and how we bring everyone’s fandoms to vinyl (and other) forms. Pop!s will continue, along with other figures, like my new favorite VYNL and the new 5 Star line. Funko has plush, shirts, action figures, keychains, blind bag/box figures…. Funko acquired LoungeFly last year as well, which adds purses, wallets, backpacks, mini-backpacks and more. And be on the lookout for Cereal and Pez, all coming soon!

TPC: What about you Mr. Sully? Are we going to see you with a big fat cigar, white suit, running New York City trying to kill Spider-Man in the future? You shouldn’t kill Spidey, he’s a nice boy.
CS: Ha! I don’t have any plans to take over the city or go after any superheroes. I’m more than happy to continue with Nerd Fu and Funko, podcasting and interacting with other nerds and talking fandoms. I’ve been doing it my whole life and I’m just stoked that someone is willing to pay me to continue doing so.

TPC: Thank you for spending a little time with us Chris. We’ll listen to you (and Steve) on NerdFu and catch up with you at New York Comic Con 2018.
CSCan’t wait! I’m really looking forward to returning to New York and NYCC again this year. See you there Jay!!

Be sure to tune into Nerd Fu right HERE. Go to the Funko website right HERE. Next time you’re at a show, say hello to Chris!

In 2014, InvestComics made a lot of speculators very happy with more money in their pockets. Not only did we accomplish that, we covered a record 14 comic conventions as press (tons of video and photo coverage throughout the site and Youtube), had articles appear on Yahoo!, started the first and only weekly top ten comic book list on BuzzFeed, Interviewed some cool talents like; Alex Segura (Vice President publicity/marketing of Archie Comics), Promoter of the Connecuit ComiConn Mitchell Hallock, Coo of Vet-Tix Eddie Rausch, Exclusive Producer Bernadette McDaid; Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, and Michael D’Alessio of Atlantic City Broadwalk Con. Our New York Comic Con 4 Day Ticket giveaway contest was a big success too.

All and all a huge year for InvestComics. Lots more was covered, but I simply cannot list it all. If you’re a follower of InvestComics, you know how we roll. Look for us to expand in 2015 in several areas. It’s going to be awesome!

A big big thank you all that have supported us throughout the year. It’s been our pleasure to put a smile on your face and some extra loot in your pockets. Remember to always have fun and to invest wisely.

If I have left anyone off the thank you list, it is completely unintentional and I truly apologize. I will shout you out on Facebook if you let me know!

An extremely light week hit the Hot Picks. Everyone wants to start their New Years early!

Shield_InvestComics (4) Shield_InvestComics (1)S.H.I.E.L.D. Will try its fourth attempt at an ongoing series this Wednesday. This speculator does not see the series lasting very long, but we’ll see. The television series right now is the reason for propelling the new title out. The television series has showed some weakness in the past and will not last that long either. We’ll see about that one too. Not saying the series or the comic are in no way worthy, but the comic is only here because of the television show. The new comic series will probably outlast the TV series. Shield (2014 Marvel) 4th Series #1 will have a plethora of variants accompanying it. We stopped counting after ten. Ridiculous yes we agree. One variant in particular has some ears pointed up is the Deadpool party sketch variant by John Tyler Christopher. This $200 variant is sold out. It might be a nice variant to have in ones arsenal when the Deadpool movie rolls around. Signed and graded (9.8 or higher of course). If you don’t want to go that high with your cash, how about the awesome $20 Mike Deodato Jr variant? This comic probably won’t command very much money in the long run, but a nice variant by Mikey nonetheless.

Since most comic companies won’t be releasing most of their regular titles this week, they are going overboard with the variant. Shield case in point number one. Case in point number two is East Of West #16. This successful Image title will give readers a special oversize issue starting the new major story line in it. At last count, nine variant covers here. Is this necessary? The best part for East of West fans here is the Jamie McKelvie variant comes in at only $15. The rest of the variants are regular price.

East_of_West_InvestComics (1) East_of_West_InvestComics (2)Miracleman for Marvel hasn’t gone exactly according to plan as far as demand and clamoring goes. No one is really talking about this book right? Anyway, All New Miracleman Annual (2014) #1 will feature artwork from Joe Quesada and that is always a get. The eye candy this dude creates is unbelievable.

One can always count on IDW to come up with a crazy awesome team-up. To end the year they’ll give us Star Trek Planet of the Apes (2014 IDW) #1. No words to say here except that there is an awesome George Perez cover to check out too.

Thank you all. From the entire InvestComics team we wish you a happy and safe New Year.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 11/12/14

Wytches_InvestComics Spider-Verse_InvestComicsBe sure to stop by the Capital Grading Services website for new updates. Like us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. An announcement on the first exclusive signing coming soon!

Not each week does the opportunity present itself that a surefire hit will surface, that one book that will be an instant aftermarket success. This week however, there is that book (and another, but more on that in a bit); Wytches (2014 Image) #2. The success on issue number one was so great, that it will indeed spill over to the second issue, I guarantee it. Get your copy quick because it’s already sold out at the distributor. The reason for the success here? Put Scott Sndyer on writing duties, put Jock on art and cover duties, which equates to a fantastic story. Add to the mix of a possible movie deal and you have instant speculation gold.

A book that may take some speculators by surprise this week is Kitchen (2014 DC/Vertigo) #1. A reverting story line coupled along with the great DC imprint of Vertigo makes for a possible sleeper. The $10 variant is already sold out, so pay attention to this one.

New_Mutants_Annual_1_InvestComics Captain_Marvel_InvestComicsIt’s not too often that an IDW comic cracks the InvestComics Hot Picks list. The aftermarket never acts too kindly to certain independent publishers, this being one of them. That said, not to take anything away from them! They put out an outstanding publishing line. This week IDW gives us a rarer original content comic instead of a licensed one. Check out Bigger Bang (2014 IDW) #1 this week. Looks like a winner.

Drifter (2014 Image) #1 is sold out at the distributor, but is still available at some of the on line outlets. If you are afraid you may miss it at your local shop, you should probably buy it on line before that becomes a non-option for you.

What more can be said on here that hasn’t already been said about Spider-Verse? I have been alerting you for months about how important this saga is. Gave you a heads up on the Gwen Stacy issue too a few weeks ago. It begs repeating though just in case you haven’t been listening. This Spider-Verse story line is one of the most important speculation Spider-Man series to come out in quite some time. This isn’t “One More Day”, or “The Clone Saga”, this is a story line that will introduce and re-introduce every single Spider-Man costume, person, metal armor, and even an animal BACK into the fold of the Marvel universe all at one time. So to reiterate for the millionth time here, what does this Django_Zorro_InvestComics Rocket_Raccoon_Variant_InvestComicsmean for the speculator? It means that there are going to be an abundance of breakout characters here. Old and more importantly NEW! If you are a reader or a speculator, you need to get on every single Spider-Verse book. Anything Marvel throws at us, get it. There will be introductions (and reentries) in books that you were not expecting and BAM the book will blow up because the character(s) suddenly are at the forefront of a new book, or appear in another thus creating a mad frenzy to find that first appearance. I said it from the beginning, the Spider-Verse story line is a huge marketing monster with tremendous potential to explore and introduce new Spider characters. Do not sleep on this specs. So with all of this stated, Spider-Verse (2014) #1 will do all of the above mentioned. The team of Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos begin the awesome series. There are two separate stories introducing two new spider characters. Yes this book, better yet, this series is one to get without a doubt!

And speaking of reintroduction’s, check out Silver Surfer (2014 5th Series) #7. There will be characters reintroduced into the Marvel lure that promise’s to blow readers away. Be sure to take a look and make an executive decision on whether or not to pursue this issue and the first appearances of our old guest. Oh and the best best part of this comic.Want to know? Dan Slott is the writer! So pulling double duty here with the reintro’s.

Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man (2014) #7 will focus on the question; who is Katie Bishop? Maybe she is going to play a major role in the Ultimate Spider-Man universe. Maybe not. Either way, her first appearance was in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #12 (2012).

All New Captain America (2014 Marvel) #1 will be accompanied with 9 variant covers at last count. This gimmick will be short lived because most likely Steve Rogers will be back in given time and Sam Wilson will be out. A “new” CaptaiJon_Sable_Freelance_1_InvestComics Superior_Iron_Man_1_InvestComicsn America is not “new” anymore and it’s grown a bit, become tiresome and non-eventful. It may sell out, but don’t look for record breaking aftermarket numbers here. The $200 variant is the only outstanding book sold out book at the moment. More of the same with the other new book the “new” Captain America will appear in this week; Captain America and the Mighty Avengers (2014) #1. There is a very nice $3.99 Rocket Raccoon variant to check out though.

Guardians 3000 (2014) #2 will introduce a new Herald to Galactus.

A new Iron Man book will turn some heads. Check out Superior Iron Man (2014) #1.

Captain Marvel has been in the news lately. Have you seen that? Something about a movie. Anyway, in this weeks Captain Marvel (2014 8th Series) #9 all eyes will be on Lila Cheney. She guest stars. Lila first appeared in New Mutants Annual #1.

Hero_2014_InvestComicsThe new Hero Initiative comic Hero Comics (2011 IDW) #2014 will feature a new Maxx story from Sam Keith. Mike Grell will provide a new story on his character from 31 years ago, Jon Sable, Freelance. A hot book for a little bit back then. Check out Jon’s first appearance in Jon Sable, Freelance #1 (1983) from First Comics. And incidentally, First Comics are making a comeback with their new release Badger comic coming soon. They were great back in the 80’s. I’m sure they will put out some great reading material this time around as well.

An odd pairing from Dynamite Entertainment this week. Django Zorro (2014 Dynamite) #1. Yes that’s right Django and Zorro?! Sounds like fun! Here’s the most awesome part of this comic release. It’s written by Quentin Tarantino! Get a CBCS witness signature on this comic, score a 9.8 and you have yourself a nice book. We’re on the saddle with this comic. The variants are fantastic too. The favorite is posted here, Nice.

A couple of other number one comics to take a peak at this week; Deep State (2014 Boom) #1 and Resurrectionists (2014 Dark Horse) #1.

Don’t forget to check out the updates on the Capital Grading Services website (www.capitalgradingservices.com).

See you soon. Invest wisely.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 7/30/14

Lots of cool news coming out of the San Diego Con this week. One of the biggest relates to the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 movie. That’s right, part 2 announced before part one even hits the screen. That’s quite brazen to say the least. By August 8th the Guardians of the Galaxy movie better have a strong showing and not fall on its face a week after its opening. We hope for the best here, but announcing a sequel to a movie that hasn’t even been released takes some brass ones, we know it’ll do well, right? Right?

Before we get to the short week, we’d like to point out a very big contest that was announced a few days ago on InvestComics. If you are a cosplayer and will be visiting the New York area (or live within the area) in October for the New York Comic Con, you need to enter this contest. A 4 day Press Pass is up for grabs. Click right HERE to check out the details.

[scrollGallery id=363]

Two comics are in for easy picking’s as far as the spec world is concerned. Low (2014 Image) #1 is sold out at Diamond and there is lots of chatter about how good this one is. You best be on this one. As for the second obvious pick up this week? How about Outcast (2014 Image) #2? Outcast has movie talks all over it already. Seems a bit ridiculous to have only one comic out and it’s getting optioned already. But that’s neither here nor there, what is not ridiculous is the money to possibly make back for your $3.99 investment. Outcast #2 is sold out. Outcast is from Robert Kirkman. He does some zombie book that has seen some success (insert dripping sarcasm there). If you see Outcast #2 on the self, do yourself a favor and buy it.

Harley Quinn (2013) #8 will have a new gang called Scatapult appearing. Chew Warrior Chicken Poyo (2014) #1 will bring back the Poyo from the Chew series once again. Poyo first appeared in Chew #8 (2010). This comic is all but gone at the distributor.

With that movie coming out this Friday. You know the one with the sequel already, 100th Anniversary Special Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) #1 will show some good sales. It also has an appearance by Silver Galactus? Is this a first appearance? If anyone knows different, please let us know. Thanks in advance!

A few books to definitely check out this week….. ComixTribe may have another hit on their hands. And Then Emily Was Gone (2014) #1 is sold out. Wool (2014 Cryptozoic) #1 is just about there on the sold out front.

Bodies (2014 Vertigo) #1 and In the House of the Worm (2014) #1 look like fantastic reads. You should check out these as well.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

About InvestComics:

InvestComics started as a magazine in 2006; the first issue wasn’t released until June of 2007. The magazine was distributed as a free comic book Investment Guide throughout local comic shops in South Florida. It was also a giveaway on Ebay for any winning bid to receive with their order.

Although the InvestComics web site was on line in 2005, it wasn’t until 2007 the web site became the main focal point and the magazine ceased. InvestComics wanted to start reaching a broader audience and began to rapidly expand. InvestComics became the “Entertainment” Investment Guide as a result of covering many areas in the industry, focusing on entertainment as well as highlighting investment opportunities.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 7/16/14

Everything you are about to read is All original material from InvestComics. 100% Authentic. No borrowed material ever, 100% InvestComics.

A whole batch of number one comics coming out this week with some potentially amazing reads to check out! We’re going to check on some of the speculative number one issues….

But first we must address the big news on the Archie Comics front. This Wednesday in Life with Archie (2010) #36 Archie will cease to exist. More like Death with Archie #36. The coverage was immense when the news came out about Archie’s demise. The coverage reached CNN, MTV, and a whole bunch of other media outlets. Here’s the very obvious thing, Archie will not die permanently. Neither will Wolverine as Marvel so claims, but that’s another story. The Life with Archie comic in general is supposed to be Archie Comics’ version of What If? Or Elseworlds. The alternate Archie universe story will bring this comic to a fever pitch and die (pardon the pun) extremely quick in the aftermarket. Absolutely no sustainability, with good reason though, but it will probably be some amazing storytelling. A must get, at least for the read itself.

Batwoman (2011 2nd Series) #33 will have a new villain named Night-Thief.

How is it that Harley Quinn Invades Comic Con Intl San Diego (2014) #1 has a bazillion copies left at Diamond? Isn’t Harley Quinn a hot item still? A number one Harley Quinn, Amanda Conner/Jimmy Palmiotti issue to have literally thousands sitting in the warehouse is a bit odd. The same could be said about Infinite Crisis Fight For The Multiverse (2014) #1. Anyone remember how hot the video game Injustice comic book was when it came out? Well this is within the same vein of coolness, but it’s another video game instead of Injustice. Again, thousands of copies still available. Looks like the Big Two might be starting the trend of overprinting again, no?

Let’s talk some sold out comics. Black Market (2014 Boom) #1 looks like a great storyline and will probably be sold out in no time. The Squidder (2014) #1 from IDW Publishing and Dark Engine (2014 Image) #1 follow the same as the aforementioned. All three of these comics have potential upside in the aftermarket after this week. Should pick them up.

Aphrodite IX Cyber Force (2014) #1 is showing some nice sales right now. Some covers are sold out already while the others are on the verge. The thing is with Aphrodite and Cyber Force, they are not aftermarket friendly. Never have been.

1346971_fulFan favorite Team Teen Titans goes for its fifth go around with Teen Titans (2014 5th Series) #1. Will DC progress with this team? The team is comprised of Red Robin, Wonder Girl, Raven, Bunker and Beast Boy.  Hmm…..that’s quite the team. Fifth time is a charm? Probably not, but probably a fun read.

The Devilers (2014) #1 from Dynamite Entertainment and The Last Fall (2014) #1 from IDW Publishing are worth reads and a looksee to determine if they are going to make any noise.

Have you seen the cover of 100th Anniversary Special X-Men (2014) #1 yet? If you’re a regular here at InvestComics you will know that we are the only comic book website to put together a romantic X-Men cover collage. So every time Marvel decides to put together some sort of a romantic kissy X-Men cover, we add it to our growing cover list. Usually I link you to the original article, but I’m just going to insert the covers here. Enjoy……again.

Invest wisely, Carpe Diem
