This Week’s Comic Highlights: From Green Goblin’s Return to Krypton to Union Jack
Welcome to this week’s edition of InvestComics Hot Picks. New releases set for Wednesday 5-22-24.
Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #1 has found herself spider-swung right into the Marvel 616 universe. Why enjoy one universe when you can crash another? Gwen’s now playing in the big leagues, and something tells me she’s not here for a quick cameo. Superior Spider-Man #7, shining the spotlight on Superior Spider-Boy. Yes, another Spider-person. Shocking, we know. Marvel’s really spinning that web to its limits. Speaking of spinning, Marvel is at it again with the “big” celebration for Amazing Spider-Man #50. Apparently, every fifty issues is a milestone now, even if it’s the seventeenth “50th” issue or something. But hey, Green Goblin’s back, and Marv Wolfman is dropping in with a story that Marvel swears you won’t forget. We’ll be the judge of that, thank you very much. The Blood Hunt event is spilling over into more titles. This week, pull on your Union Jack because Union Jack: The Ripper – Blood Hunt #1 hits the stands. Joey Chapman (yes, the one from 1980) is back under the mask, slicing through the foggy streets in style. And because we’re all about keeping it classy, Marvel’s serving up another poly-bagged, red-banned delight with Blood Hunt #2—because nothing says “collector’s item” like a comic you can’t even peek at without ruining its mint condition. Oh, and Joey Chapman first appeared in Captain America #253 (1980) and then as Union Jack in Captain America #254. He is the “current” Union Jack in the Marvel U.

Blood Squad Seven #1, penned by Joe Casey. It’s a new team, folks, and with a name like that, you’d better believe they’re not here to hand out cookies. Dark Horse Comics is rolling out The Butcher’s Boy #1. With a title like that, we’d bet our bottom dollar it’s a horror comic—and not the type where the scariest thing is the dialogue. Expect blood, suspense, and probably a cleaver or two. Over in the unexpectedly eerie town of Riverdale, Archie Comics is dialing up the doom with Archie Comics: Judgement Day #1. Yes, that’s right, demons are descending on Riverdale. It’s always fun when Archie’s gang tangles with the supernatural, and something tells us this isn’t just about Jughead’s insatiable appetite. Catwoman #65 sports a Manga cover by the talented Ractha Lin. DC’s Anime covers have been a hit, and this one’s no exception—nothing like a little East meets West to spice up your comic collection. In Superman #14, it’s Superman vs. Lobo. That’s right, our Kryptonian is throwing down with the intergalactic bounty hunter. Expect punches that break the sound barrier and insults that break spirits.

This week, Marvel’s rolling out three “Black Costume” variant covers that are so cool, they’ve redeemed themselves from last week’s fashion faux pas. That’s right, no corny, bad looks this week—just sleek, dark, and dangerously stylish. The first appearance covers (not Spidey though); Sensational She-Hulk #8, Amazing Spider-Man #50, and Black Widow And Hawkeye #3.
