Cover Gem of the Week: Ultimate Spider-Man #18 by Iban Coello.
If you’ve ever wondered what a double-dose of whiplash looks like on paper, Iban Coello just handed it to you with Ultimate Spider-Man #18. Because why settle for one Spider-Man swinging at your face when you can have both, locked into a velocity contest across the skyline like they’re late for a multiversal pizza delivery? This cover doesn’t slow down for anyone. The two Ultimate Spider-Men (yes, plural) are coming in hot, web-zipping their way right off the page like Coello decided motion blur should get a starring role. The background? A purple-sky New York with buildings in perfect skyline shape as the buildings in near focus are smeared into lines of architectural speed, flanking both sides like a motion-sick IMAX reel. The sun—somewhere between “majestic” and “melodramatic explosion”—looms behind them like it’s trying to keep up, and failing.
But let’s not breeze past those webs. One web arc actually stretches forward, reaching out of the panel and almost into your lap. If that doesn’t scream speed, you may need to check for a pulse. The costumes? A feast. Every shine, fold, and shadow glows with the contrast of that retro-future sunset haze, capturing not only the high-speed chaos but the cinematic beauty of it all. Iban Coello proves once again that Spider-Men don’t pose. They charge. And this cover makes you feel like you should probably duck.
Iban Coello Soria (born 1983) is a Spanish comic book artist based near Barcelona. He first trained at Barcelona’s JOSO art school in his mid‑teens while attending traditional school, then chose to focus full‑time on drawing. He credits early inspiration to copying arcade-screen illustrations, video games, and the small comic collection his father provided.
Coello launched his professional career after meeting Marvel’s C.B. Cebulski circa 2007–08 at a convention in Spain; Cebulski liked his portfolio and commissioned samples, leading to consistent Marvel work. He’s since become a Marvel-exclusive artist, contributing to high-profile titles like Ultimate Spider-Man, Venom, Deadpool & The Mercs for Money, Fantastic Four, Eddie Brock: Carnage, Alien: Paradiso, and more.
Before comics, Coello studied computers and held various jobs until committing fully to drawing. He cites influences from Japanese manga artists such as Akira Toriyama and Yusuke Murata, as well as American artists like Sean Gordon Murphy—a style reflected in his use of kinetic action lines and inking techniques.
Coello also has credits outside Marvel, working with publishers like Dark Horse (Star Wars: Knight Errant) and IDW, and providing cover art for Predator: The Original Years and other licensed series
