The Dregs #1 – Another new Black Mask release and of course another sold out comic. Nothing new here with them, just a great indie company doing their thing.

Star Wars #27 – This new Star Wars comic may contain a new character or two or three or….well you get the idea. Yoda visits a new world in this story. One never knows what they will find yes?

Odyssey Of The Amazons #1 – We love the story here and you should too. Writer Kevin Grevioux delivers the story PRE-Princess Diana’s birth. Art from Ryan Benjamin. Look for possible first appearances in this week that may eventually lead to solo books down the road.

Batgirl #7 – The first appearance of Ethan Cobblepot, Penguins son.

Justice League vs Suicide Squad #6 – The final issue of this mini will introduce the new Justice League.

Odyssey Of The Amazons #1

Odyssey Of The Amazons #1

A few Bat books from DC hit the Hot Picks.
The Joker has a big revelation in Batman Beyond #4.
An interesting team-up occurring this week. Headed by writer Jeff Parker and artist David Hahn, Batman 66 Meets Wonder Woman 77 #1. Variant cover by Alex Ross.
A potentially big speculation comic is headed our way this Wednesday. Batgirl #7 will introduce Ethan Cobblepot. He is the Penguin’s son. Writer Hope Larson will drive this story as artist Chris Wildgoose will steer. The speculative side of this comic will all depend on how well Hope Larson delivers the first appearance here. We have faith Hope will deliver. If fans are interested enough, the buzz will start and sustain for a bit, thus creating a bump in the aftermarket. Buy this comic, judge for yourself.

Contrary to what many may know, a world existed before Wonder Woman was ever conceived. A probable, extremely interesting read coming our way from writer Kevin Grevioux (art: Ryan Benjamin) will focus of the worlds of the Amazons before the birth of Princess Diana. Look for first appearances galore in Odyssey Of The Amazons #1 and DC running on these characters for a while. We predict a lead character or two to get their own book eventually spinning from this series.
If you’re a gun advocate, supporter or have some sort of feelings on it and you like comic books, then check out Deathstroke #11 this Wednesday. This issue (and thereafter?) will take a look at the gun violence in America. Written by Christopher Priest and art from Denys Cowan.
Finale time; Justice League vs Suicide Squad #6. This last issue will introduce the new Justice League team.

Marvel’s monster book trial; Monsters Unleashed, continues to spawn a bunch of one shots. Spider-Man Deadpool Monsters Unleashed #1 this week.

InvestComics Indie Comics Hot Picks……….
When we visited the San Diego Comic Con 2016 we had the distinct honor of meeting many creators and celebrities we haven’t met yet throughout our convention circuit. One of our standouts was the meeting of the heavy metal band Slayer with artist Eric Powell. A glimpse of the new Slayer comic book was out for all to see. Well just the cover really. An Eric Powell cover. The time has arrived for that Slayer comic to be released by Dark Horse. Check out Slayer Repentless #1, written by Jon Schnepp and art from Guiu Vilanova. Two great covers too, Eric Powell and Glenn Fabry.

Sounds like a place we won’t be making reservations to any time soon, but we’ll reserve the new book though. Written by Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler. Art from Eric Zawadzki.

Ladycastle #1 (Boom Studios). Dante (Image Comics); writer Matt Hawkins and artist Darick Robertson (Image Comics). Loose Ends #1 (Image Comics); Writer Jason Latour and artist Chris Brunner.

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

Ms. Marvel #1

Buy Now

IC 100 Club Pick: Ms. Marvel #1 (1977) 8.0. When Marvel Studios hits theaters with their first female lead comic book movie, it’s going to be huge. It will make movie goers and comic fans forget about the Wonder Woman flick very, very fast. How can we say this? Well first and foremost, it’s an opinion. Secondly, Warner Bros. has not yet had an answer for any of the Marvel movies as far as the “level” goes. Will the Wonder Woman movie be good? Probably, but Marvel will out-do DC with their female lead movie Ms. Marvel. It will be set in modern day and appeal radically to the younger and older female audiences as Disney KNOWS how to do. It will happen. Disney KNOWS marketing. So with that confidence stated, this week’s IC 100 Club Pick is Ms. Marvel #1 (1977) graded at a low 8.0 and the low price of $79.99. This low grade will not matter once the movie hits and the popularity of Ms. Marvel is at its peak. This movie will be huge. This first appearance of Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel will be untouchable.

Before reading ahead, we feel we need to warn you that our articles contain very harsh truths in them. Not vulgar language, just a good solid dose of honesty. They always have, they always will. If you are easily offended, cannot come to terms that other people have opinions too beside yourself and especially if you’re a fanboy, discontinue reading. The premiere Suicide Squad writer returns for a one shot. Suicide Squad War Crimes Special #1 by John Ostrander.
The introduction of a new hero will happen in Future Quest #4. Writer Jeff Parker and artist’s Steve Rude and Aaron Lopresti are bringing it.
Two DC annuals to check out. First annual ever; Gotham Academy Annual #1 from Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher. The origin of the first Bombshell; Batgirl in DC Comics Bombshells Annual #1 this Wednesday.
As Warner Bros. is a bit late to the superhero movie party, DC is a bit late on the variant cover theme too. Justice League Of America #9 has a Batman v Superman Dawn Of Justice Cover. Who cares right? Well not only is the cover bad as*, it’s drawn by (insert sarcasm) some artist named Jim Lee. $3.99 cover price. We’ll take one please.

The “new” female comic character is still a hot commodity. Mostly hot for a minute, then cools off, but then there are ones that catch on. Will the first appearance of the female Electro in Amazing Spider-Man #17 be a hot ticket? We’ll have to wait and see for about a minute…..or maybe longer.
Marvel will go to the well once again regarding their success with Gwenpool and Spider-Gwen. In All-New Wolverine Annual #1 we’ll see Wolvergwen and Spiderine. Newer mash-up’s here but this time with the all-new Wolverine character. Although the Wolvergwen character looks like a first appearance, a “Gwenverine” character popped up on a variant cover back in August of 2015. Old Man Logan #2 gets the dubious distinction of being that first appearance issue. Seems to be much like the first appearance of Gwenpool, cover only. So is Gwenverine and Wolergwen the same character? We don’t make this stuff up, we just report it.
We’re loving the cover to Silver Surfer #6. It’s the 200th overall issue of Surfer comic book issues. The cover shows many awesome past Silver Surfer comic books surrounding him. It’s neat.

Dark Horse Comics offers fans two number one comics written by two fan fav’s of the industry this week. Witchfinder City Of The Dead #1 will be written by Mike Mignola and World Of Tanks #1 will be written by Garth Ennis. World Of Tanks #1 will be based on a game that has an audience of 110 million players. That’s a whole lot of possible built-in audience to reach! Two debut Dark Horse Comics to pick up. That’s some nice debut reading material here.
IDW Publishing’s Jill Thompsons Killer Inside Me #1 is sold out. A lot of buzz surrounding this book. Look for a possible bounce in the aftermarket as readers latch on to this classic story put into comic book form. They’ll be delighted and the bounce may happen.
It looks as though IDW has an answer to DC’s All-Star Batman. It’s called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe #1. Various A-list creators will contribute to this new on-going TMNT series. Look for possible introductions in this first issue and as the series progresses. This first issue features a back-up story from Kevin Eastman and Bill Sienkiewicz. Now that’s some serious duo firepower. Count us in on this series and especially this first issue.
Spawn #265 will introduce a new character and will also have Ant make an appearance. Ant was introduced in Ant #1 (2012) from Arcana Studio. HER last known appearance of Ant was in Savage Dragon #180 (2012). Will Erik Larsen bring back Ant for good? Hopefully we see more. We’ll wait and see.

FLASH GORDON CELEBRATES 80TH ANNIVERSARY WITH NEW COMIC SERIES, DEBUTING IN APRIL BY JEFF PARKER AND EVAN SHANER

FLASH GORDON #1 Continues the Thrilling Adventures of Sci-Fi Icon, Courtesy of Jeff Parker, Evan Shaner, and Jordie Bellaire

January 20, 2014, Mt. Laurel, NJ:  Dynamite proudly announces that writer Jeff Parker (Batman ’66) will continue the science fiction thrills of a science fiction legend in Flash Gordon #1, a new ongoing series illustrated by Evan “Doc” Shaner (Deadpool) and featuring the colors of Jordie Bellaire (Pretty Deadly).  Slated to debut in April 2014, Flash Gordon marks the 80th anniversary of the fictional icon, follows Parker’s critically acclaimed Kings Watch miniseries, and includes beloved cast members Dale Arden, Dr. Hans Zarkov, and the infamous Ming the Merciless.
“Dynamite and editor Nate Cosby have put together the dream team for Flash Gordon, and I’m the lucky writer who gets to work with them,” says Jeff Parker.  “We’re bringing Flash back for a new audience.  It’s over-the-planet high action and adventure where Flash’s spirit and optimism are as powerful as anything the forces of Ming the Merciless can dish out.  We also have some of my favorite artists contributing covers – make no mistake, this book is going to absolutely kill!”
The new Flash Gordon series places the ultimate sci-fi hero on the bizarre planet Mongo, where his thirst for thrills and danger makes him the perfect weapon against world-breaking Ming the Merciless and his awful inter-planetary swarms of terror.  Can the cocksure Man From Earth funnel his overconfidence into saving worlds, or will the universe fall to Ming?
Dynamite has assembled a team of three highly respected creators for the new Flash Gordon series, individuals whose recent comics work has made their names instantly recognizable to fans.  Writer Jeff Parker’s recent successes at DC Comics – including Aquaman and the retro-chic Batman ’66, follow his many years as a contributor to Marvel titles including Agents of Atlas, X-Men: First Class, and Hulk.   Evan “Doc” Shaner will bring his kinetic visual style seen in Deadpool and Ghostbusters to the Flash Gordon project, just as Jordie Bellaire will bring the coloring flair she’s known for on such titles as Pretty Deadly, Captain Marvel, and The Rocketeer.
Flash Gordon #1 will feature a wide selection of cover variants, presented by some of comics’ most talented artists:  Gabriel Hardman, Jonathan Case, Declan Shalvey, and Marc Laming.  Stephen Mooney provides a special 80th Anniversary Cover, illustrated to capture an aesthetic of the bygone golden era, while Ken Haeser provides a cute Subscription-Only Variant Cover of “Li’l Flash”, intended as a reward for dedicated fans who preorder with their local comic shop retailers.  A Blank Authentix Cover will be created for the first issue, featuring blank white space on the cover perfect for convention artist commissions or the creative whims of the do-it-yourself fan.
Comic shop retailers are invited to create store-specific cover editions, as well:

  • Dynamite has designed a “Death to Ming” propaganda-style cover as a Retailer Exclusive Variant Cover, available for retailers to order through Diamond Comics (Item Code FEB141156).  Numerous retailers can share the “Death to Ming” artwork, but have personalized store names built into the front cover design.
  • Dynamite also welcomes the opportunity to develop unique Retailer Exclusive Variant Covers featuring artwork not available anywhere else.  Stores may contact Marketing Manager Keith Davidsen (keith.davidsen@dynamite.com, 856-312-1040 x114) for more information.

Flash Gordon #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ February Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release on April 9, 2014.  Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Flash Gordon #1 with their local comic book retailers.  Flash Gordon will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 1/1/13

DC Vertigo will have a huge hit on their hands this week. Be sure to be on top of Dead Boy Detectives (2013) #1. This Sandman spin off will have the loyalist flocking to the shelves for this one. Not only will the Sandman faithful be a part of the sellout here, but the curious readers and collectors. The Cliff Chiang variant is already sold out and the regular addition is probably on its way to a second print. Want to get in on the ground floor with this hit book? How about looking for a Sandman #25 from 1991. Some dude named Neil Gaiman was on the book at the time, but this comic holds the first appearance of Dead Boy Detectives. So…….what are you waiting for?

[scrollGallery id=327]

Batman The Dark Knight (2011 2nd Series) #26 will be a (mostly) silent book. No reading required here, just lots of pictures. Think of this as the Batman Playboy issue. Although not a new inventive idea by any means, there have been comics with no words in them. In recent history however, one comic seems to stand out above the rest. In 1984 (wait this is 29 years ago! Recent history??) writer Larry Hama had the comic book hobby enthusiast pining for the release of G.I. Joe The Real American Hero each month. With issue number 21 THE silent issue hit. Not only was it a big commercial success, but the comic also featured the first appearance of Storm Shadow. This particular book commands some nice bucks as a graded 9.8 or even a 9.6. Will this silent (almost silent) Batman comic ever be a collectors item? Maybe, maybe not who knows? But it sure is fun reminiscing about that awesome G.I. Joe comic!

If you’re a frequent flyer around here you will know that InvestComics loves covering the variants. This week there will be THE mother of all variants. A $300 Superman Unchained (2013 DC) #5 Jim Lee incentive sketch cover. This beauty falls in the category of; if you got it, spend it because you’ll make your money back three times easily if the comic is graded a 9.8 and signed by Jim Lee. Can the same be said for the very attractive (and sold out!) Twilight Zone (2014 Dynamite) #1? The variants are fetching $100 (25 exist), $75 (50 exist), and $20. Follow the same guidelines as the aforementioned when you do acquire the $100 comic. But of course get the signature of J. Michael Straczynski on this one! So wait a sec here, a 25 copy variant on a sold out comic across the board, signed by J. Michael Straczynski, and a 9.8 grade? Look to triple or quadruple your take back here. This will actually be as big as the Jim Lee Variant as far as aftermarket percentage goes.

There are some other sold out variants to check out this week; like Legenderry A Steampunk Adventure (2014) #1, Revelations (2014) #1, and Lil Ernie (2014) #1.

Dark Horse Comics brings back an old 1940’s hero in Captain Midnight 1 For $1 (2014) #1. This $1 comic will reintroduce Captain Midnight to the modern day. It’s almost sold out, and rightly so! For a buck? If you’re in the market for a Golden Age book, you can check out the first appearance of Cap Midnight in The Funnies #57 (1941). A couple of sold out number one issues to keep an eye on for on new comic book day; From the amazing Michael Linsner comes Sin Boldly (2013 Image) #1, and from Dark Horse Juice Squeezers (2014 Dark Horse) #1.

There are two number one comics coming that are running at a very slow pace out of the gate sales wise. Bad Blood (2013) #1 and Baltimore Chapel of Bones (2013) #1. Maybe they’ll pick up….

And finally, a couple of hot comics with new creators on board to check out. Guardians of the Galaxy (2013 3rd Series) #10 features the awesome artistry of Kevin Maguire and Aquaman (2011 5th Series) #26 features new writer Jeff Parker.

Invest wisely,

Jay Katz

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 11-18-09

Another week, another death, another return and a new creator on a hot book. All this plus more, check out another week of Hot Picks!

adventurecomics4.gifdccomicspresents871stprime_25.gifWell Superboy Prime is back, maybe punching his way back into the DC Universe? DC fans will welcome him with open arms amidst the mass confusion that followed the ‘first punch’. Adventure Comics #4 will be the return issue, will you return? If you’re feeling adventurous these days and you DO return  you could always pick up the first appearance of Prime in DC Comics Presents #87 from 1985 for about the $30 range. With all the story changes and characters dying, returning, revamping in the DC Universe
It’s hard for the collector to get any value from the back issues. Getting a Superboy Prime first appearance won’t break your bank, but it sure does
seem like a long shot as far as the Investment side goes.
There are a couple of more ‘returns’ to speak of this week. In Amazing Spider-Man #612, Electro will be causing some serious problems for our hero in the new storyline Gauntlet. Buying an early first appearance in a amazingspm612.gifamspm9_1stelectro_1964_2500.gifSpider-Man book from 1964 is always a nice thing. Amazing Spider-Man #9, Electro’s first appearance sells for $2600. This is a recommended buy because of how much upside potential it has. Speaking of upside, this next comic shows promise of none, but its fun to point it out! Brave and The Bold #29 comes out with a return of Brother Power The Geek. Yes, who is that? Why do we care? For those of you that do care, check out Brother Power The Geek #1 from way back in 1968 for the first look at this weirdo. This unused character is being pulled from the doldrums why brotherpowerthegeek1_1968_80.gifthebraveandthebold29.gifexactly? Your guess is as good as mine. If you feel like dropping $75 on this first appearance, don’t expect much return in the future. The only saving grace of The Geek coming back here is that Michael Straczynski is writing it. So what would a week be without a life altering event in the DC Universe or as DC put it this week ‘rewriting the History books’. Flash: Rebirth #5 gets the distinct honor this week, so make sure to check it out and get disappointed again. Did I say that out theflashrebirth5.gifdarkavengers11.gifloud? Anyway, one of these days these rewriting history moments will mean something again. So staying on topic here a bit, Dark Avengers #11 promises a death. Will it mean anything? Probably not, but it’s always important to point these things out.

thunderbolts138.gifJeff Parker will be debuting on Thunderbolts #138. He’s the writer of Agents of Atlas and some upcoming titles in January Including Marvel Boy: The Uranian #1 and Fall of The Hulks Red Hulk #1. Jeff Parker will bring his ‘A’ game here according to deadlocke1.gifdrhorrible.gifnola1_2.gifreports. Look for this comic to sell out quickly. There are a few number one issues you should take a look at this week. Nola #1 from Boom Studios!, Dr. Horrible and Dead Locke #1 from Dark Horse. All 3 look promising. Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited comes out with the secret origin of the Black Knight. If you want to see the original Black Knight story, travel back in time to 1955, as Editor Stan Lee of Atlas blackknight1.gifblackknight1_1955_editorstanlee_1300.gifComics brings you Black Knight #1. It’ll cost you about $2600 for this trip so make sure you’re comfy. A sleeper this week comes in the form of a Boomwaltdisneycomicsstories7002.gifwaltdisneycomicsstories700.gifStudios! Comic. Walt Disney Comics & Stories #700 will make its way to the shelf at your local comic shop near you. How did this comic reach #700 already? Anyway, with the recent acquisition of Marvel, Disney will be front and center again. This issue brings in a new Superhero team. When was the last time there was an Introduction in the Disney comic book world? This comic will disappear quickly so buy it before their gone.

Here are the IC Extra’s This week to take a look at this Wednesday……
