With the influx of female characters making their way into the comic book medium these days, with lots of thanks to Disney (Marvel) making it so that the female character shows more of a “character side” as they have never before, we wanted to make sure to recognize some of the keys players. We completely understand that female characters have been around since the inception of comic books (no need for a history lesson, stop typing that email or Facebook post), but there is a movement happening in the past few years to the likes we have never really seen in case you haven’t realized it. Disney put a female lead in its new Star Wars movie, now the next Star Wars movie (Rouge One) will ALSO be a female lead. They know what they’re doing and their comics are following the same guidelines. So as is everyone else in the comic book industry. Much like what always happens with InvestComics and everyone following us or emulating. We’re flattered though. Like Disney.

Listed below are some new comics, some old comics and characters WE like. This will be the first installment of more Female character checklist to come. Of course we will in FACT not have some of your favorites here, but all in due time. Relax. Just breathe. Deep breaths. No emails, no Facebook post, Tweets, Instagram notes. Breathe……breathe.

Comic Broker Report – Undervalued Moderns Special

The market can be slow to reflect the value of certain issues.  This can happen for many reasons.  Each month I try to give readers the opportunity to get in on a sleeper well before the market catches up.  Though I am not always right I try to select comics that are worth collecting even if you might never make a penny on the fast flip.  I have featured some of these comics in the past.  They make this list because they remain largely unknown to the collecting community.

Batman Volume 1 Issue 656

If you are looking for Damian Wayne’s first full appearance then here ya go!  Issue 655 along with its variant and other printings are often the ones collectors want but they only feature Batman’s son in shadows.  This issue is where we get to see the league trained badass for the first time!

Iron Man,Incredible Hulk,Nick Fury       Iron Man 2: Agents of Shield ( second appearance )

images Iron_Man_2_Agents_of_S.H.I.E.L.D.

It’s odd to me that Agent Coulson’s first appearance is so undervalued.  It’s pretty tough to find and features a character that is loved by most Marvel fans.  With Agents of SHIELD getting better with each episode I hope these two comics see significant increases in value.

Battle Scars 1,6

Battle_Scars_Vol_1_1 background

So if you don’t appreciate Coulson’s first actual appearance in a comic then you can pick up these two which feature his first appearance ( and named appearance ) in the regular Marvel Universe.

Th Invincible Iron Man ( 2008 ) 10,11

160951_20090130192741_large 161377_20120421132025_thumb 164423_20110703121943_large 164429_20120421132352_thumb 167473_20120421132609_thumbyhst-16722662390539_2253_2231834869

Ok there are a ton of these to hunt down.  Why?  Well recently the actor who voiced Iron Man’s A.I.  J.A.R.V.I.S. told us he’s playing the Vision.  This means that the A.I. that Stark created is becoming one of the most popular Avengers in the next film.  The Vision first appeared in Avengers 57 and it highly valued.  But as the film version will be bringing the Stark A.I. to life as an android,  these comics should be worth a lot more than the currently are.  Issue 10 features the first appearance of the RESCUE armor, made for Pepper Potts by Tony.  In Issue 11 we learn that the A.I. system in her armor is the J.A.R.V.I.S intelligence!  That makes these issues the first comic appearance of the intelligence system which will become the Vision in Avengers 2.  So far the hardest issues to find are the second print for issue 10.  This us due to the first cover for RESCUE.  Issue 10 has variants, the hardest one to find being the secret retailer variant.  The only way to tell is a barcode variation pictured above!

Elektra Assassin 2

Ok I admit I am a huge Bill Paxton fan.

Once we learned that his character on A.O.S. was secretly a Hydra agent this book should have seen some market action.  It has a wonderful cover and is written by an industry great.

Action Comics 471

Despite many who were disappointing by the Man of Steel I have come to realize that it is a very good film.  Russel Crow actually steals it along with Zod’s top soldier Faora who first appears  in this issue of Action Comics.

Supernaturals 4

It’s still amazing to me that Groot is coming to a theater near you in August.  For a character with less that 5 pre Copper Age appearances it just seems insane that an Alien like this is being thrust into the mainstream. To my knowledge this issue is his first appearance in the modern age.  This series inserted masks into the issues and I believe the ones with the Ghost Rider mask are the hardest to find.

Chuck Norris  and the Karate Kommandos 1

First appearance of this legend is all you need to know.

Captain America 208, first appearance of Arnim Zola

If you geeked out as much as me with Zola’s incredible appearance in the Winter Soldier then I applaud your love of insanely twisted comic villains!

Comic Broker Report – February 2014 (part 2)

Two hours in the bathroom not only yielded a better nights sleep but a part 2 for February !  Enjoy!

The Brave and the Bold 57 ( First Rex Mason, Metamorpho )

Do current readers even care who Rex Mason is?  Well if you didn’t catch the name drop by the Earth 2 Batman from this month’s Earth 2 Annual 2 then you might just miss out down the road.

SPOILER-In the Earth 2 Annual 2 we finally learn the secret identity of the Earth 2 Batman.  Personally I wasn’t surprised but the story was well crafted and the art was decent.  The most interesting tidbit was the source of Batman’s powers, Miraclo.  Last month I mentioned the importance of this little drug as it relates to the CW and the upcoming Hourman series.  Now we learn it is critical to Earth 2’s most popular character.  The source of Miraclo on Earth 2? Yup, Rex Mason.-END SPOILER

Note:  Jarvis Pennyworth, Alfred’s father is one badass butler!  Read the DC Earth 2 Annual 2 mentioned above to find out what I mean.   Batman 9 isn’t only the first appearance of Strix but Jarvis Pennyworth as well!

Oh and Earth 2 Batman first appeared in the last year’s Annual 1.

Journey into Mystery 97 ( first Surtur )

journey 97 first Surtur

Staying ahead of the game is the key to success if you are buying and selling comics in today’s market.  Rumors concerning the storyline for Thor 3 are already starting to pop up around the web.  If the fire lord Surtur and the Demons of Muspelheim end up central to the story then this classic will quickly increase beyond the nice value it already holds.

Thor Annual 18 ( First Flame/Hrinmeer )

Thor Annual 18 first Flame of Muspelheim Hrinmeer

Though common, this issue of Thor features the half elf/half demon Hrinmeer.  The final battle Ragnarok could be the focal point of Thor 3 making  this issue quite important.   It was pollybagged and easy to find in high grade so I suggest hunting for the newsstand edition!

The X-Men 4 ( first Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver )

No explanation is needed as to the future importance of these characters.  If you are reading this article then I assume you love the Avengers and X-Men as much as I do!  You will NEVER find this comic for a cheap price and though that makes a bargain hunter like me mad it does not make it any less important to collectors.

Avengers 181 ( First Scott Lang )

Over the last few years Marvel Premiere 47 has been hot.  Knowing that an Ant-Man film was coming, collectors were quick to snag this Bronze Age gem.  As information about the film has started to leak fans are realizing that while Scott appeared as Ant-Man in MP 47 he actually appeared first in this Avengers comic!

X-Factor 19/Marvel Age Annual 3 ( First Horsemen of Apocalypse )

Currently no one knows what Marvel films has in store for the Apocalypse/X-Men film.  AOA?  It’s possible with Blink in the mix.  There is also a strong likelihood that the Horsemen will be involved.  So while hoarders and flippers are banking copies of X-Factor 5,6,& 24 you might just want to scoop these up while those other guys are distracted:

X-Factor 15 ( First Pestilence/Plague )

X-Factor 11 ( First War/Abraham Kieros )

x-Factor 12 ( First Famine, Autumn Rolfson )

Astonishing X-Men ( Second Series, 1,1a,1c – First Wolverine as Death )

You never know how Marvel Film’s is going to alter comic storylines so there is always the  possibility that Wolverine could end up one of the Horsemen in Singer’s next film. If that happens this comic will explode.

Note: There is also a Dynamic Forces Marvel Authentix Edition limited to 3,500, and a signed edition.

The Amazing-Spider-Man Annual 8 ( First Alistair Smythe )

annual 19 spider-man first Smythe

Spider-Man 2 is filling up with villains, I hope the script is well written to accommodate the Sinister-Six never mind the inventor of Spider-Slayers!

Nick Fury VS. S.H.I.E.L.D. 3 ( First Alexander Pierce )

Hopefully this Agent played by Robert Redford doesn’t end up the Red Skull is disguise but even if he doesn’t his first appearance is relatively easy to find.

DMZ ( 1, 2008 Convention Variant )

Vertigo is enjoying a lot of TV and film rumors lately including this incredible tale by Brian Wood.  Issue 1 is not easy to find but this con exclusive is the real cherry.

Or you could get the first appearance of the series from this fine Vertigo title.  It’s much cheaper too!

Y the Last Man 37

22 Brides 1,2 ( First Painkiller Jane )

index indexs

You could buy issue 1 or it’s Comic Cavalcade Variant but then you would only own a cameo of Painkiller Jane.  So far all adaptions of this brutal beauty have fizzled.  That does not bode well for long term investing, that is if you like profit.  But the issue 2 variant above and it’s regular cover ( not pictured ) are not easily found and feature her first full appearance!

Red Star ( Wizard 1/2, Wizard 1/2 Foil, Issue 1,6 Variant and any of the DF signed editions )

It looks like this film adaptation is a reality.  I have always loved this series and highly recommend it to those who love original sequential art stories.  At this point I would look for: both wizard 1/2 issues, issue one of the regular series, any DF signed editions and the variant for issue 6.

J.A.R.V.I.S. as the Vision?!?!?

Late last year I recommended The Invincible  Iron Man 10, 10 variant, 10 secret retailer varian, 10 2nd print, 11 & 11 2nd print.  I speculated that the J.A.R.V.I.S. AI from Marvel Films might factor into the origin of Ultron.  Well it turns out that the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S., Paul Bettany has been cast to play the Vision!  Watch these comics explode as a result.

Squee ( All printings for all issues! )

The Cartoon Network is adapting this Slave Labor classic!  Issues have multiple printings and are all super rare.  This one should spike in value due to the fact that the internet is going to be the primary source for copies.

Legends 3 ( First Modern Suicide Squad )

Honestly I am having are hard time recommending this one.  It’s not the first appearance of the SS, it’s not rare or hard to find and it’s part of a mini-series.  But it will continue to get hot especially after the most recent episode of Arrow.  As far as Suicide Squad issues to buy there are others which I would purchase before this one. What are they? Check back next month!

Comic Broker Report – May 2013

The Comic Broker’s Report

by Topher Seal

This month’s report is going to be a quick one as I slave away on next month’s UK Special.  Until that time I suggest you:

Pass on Iron Man 3 and rent John Dies at the End, then watch it three times.

Don’t believe the Marvel Miracleman hype!  ( I may have to eat my words down the road on this one. )

and take comfort in the fact that Twinkies are coming back so you can eat the rest of  that 4 month old last box you bought on Ebay.

Batman Beyond 1

Batman 20 concluded Scott Snyder’s surprisingly good Clayface tale and as an added bonus we get to see the Gen 1 Batman Beyond Suit!  There have been some great appearances by the future Batman over the years but if you are looking for the one with the most  potential on the back issue market then this is it.  There is also a free version that was made available 1 month later, a newsstand edition and a Six Flags Giveaway!

Bodie Troll 1

Collected from digital work this new indie gem is incredible.  The art is fantastic and it looks like a prime candidate for a cartoon adaptation.  For now you can get this one cheap  but the FCBD 2013 issue will generate buzz.  I can see first issues slowly drying up over the next few months.

The Stuff of Legend FCBD 2009

Of all the recent properties to get optioned ( Hoax Hunters, The Test and even Rachel Rising ) it is this wonderful comic that deserves the most attention.  Early issues are hard to find but none as tough to track down as this 2009 FCBD issue featuring the first appearances of the title.

Kung Fu Fighter 1 ( first Bronze Tiger )

This week DC is rolling out a host of characters into the New 52.  Bronze Tiger is easily my favorite.   The new design looks amazing and despite the small chance of commercial success I still say Kung Fu Fighter is worth  purchasing because it isn’t that easy to find in high grade.

DC (re)introduces BRONZE TIGER and CHESHIRE into the DCU.

New Teen titans Annual 2 ( First Cheshire )

A sick Perez cover has to be larger than all the rest!  As I mentioned above DC is introducing new blood into the failing New 52 with Cheshire?  Well lucky for this comic it has a great cover and is also the first appearance of The Vigilante. If you can find a CGC 9.8 for under 50 it’s worth it.

Adventures of Superman 465, 466

Get the newsstand variants for these forgotten Superman comics!  Hank Henshaw ( Cyborg Superman ) will be making his debut in the New 52 and is likely to have the most success with readers.

Rescue One-Shot

The new Iron Man film is splitting fans down the middle.  I won’t tell you why but one of the best parts of the film is actually Pepper Potts.  There aren’t many appearances of Rescue but this one-shot is heating up on Ebay and if Pepper ever wears the suit in film you will be sorry you passed this one up.

DC it flat out crazy announcing a Bat-Cow Comic!  For those of you who love Pet characters like Titus Wayne and Dex-Starr then you should look for this super rare DC comic featuring the first Bat-Cow!

Rachel Rising 1 ( 3rd Print )

Terry Moore’s latest is quite an effort and when it was optioned sales exploded.  But issue one does have a high print run compared to under 1500 for the third print.  Buy and hold to cash in down the road!

The Walking Dead 95

Robert Kirkman loved Rachel Rising so much he put a preview in the back of Issue 95.  No one really noticed and even though the preview  came out right before the trade for the first few issues the fact that there is an early appearance of Rachel Rising in a WD book means the heat is coming.

Strangers in Paradise 1

If Rachel Rising hits big don’t forget about this classic!  Moore recently revealed that Rachel Rising occurs in the same universe as Strangers in Paradise!  It’s pricey but worth every dollar paid.

Comic Broker Report – February 2013

The Comic Book Broker’s Report ( February )

By Topher Seal

I just cannot believe the online market for current comics.  People are throwing down some serious cash during poor economic times for unproven, highly speculative books.  Now I won’t recommend that you go and spend nearly 200 dollars for Peter Panzerfaust 1 or Saga 1 or any Thought Bubble or Hastings Variant but I do suggest you think about the future and put your money in wise investments.  Just because a comic property has been optioned by Hollywood or has a print run under 5k doesn’t mean it belongs in your fireproof long box.  A wise investor studies the market relentlessly and can recognize a bad deal when he/she sees one.

Don’t Buy: Thor 344, buy this instead:

Thor 347  ( First appearance of Kurse )

Kurse will be in the next Thor movie and while collectors are already hoarding 344 this issue might be the sleeper.

Note: Kurse also has one of the greatest deaths in comics and that issue is very affordable!

Don’t Buy Justice League of America 183-185,

buy this instead:

The Forever People 1 ( First full Darkseid )

So a JLA movie will be coming out to set up the future of the DC Universe’s film franchises and there is already massive speculation as to who will be in the film and what storyline it will follow.  Many are buying up issues 183-185 assuming that elements of this story will be the basis for the film.  That’s too risky to drop the kind of money these books are demanding.  Plus the moment that info was released Darkseid became the new Thanos and appearances have quadrupled in price.  Guides list Darkseid’s first appearance as Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen 134 and his second as 135 but both appear to be cameos.  His first full appearance is in The Forever People 1 and I would also scoop New Gods 2.

Don’t buy The Sixth Gun 1,2,3,4,5,6,……

Buy this instead:

The Sixth Gun FCBD 2011

This wonderful comic by Cullen Bunn has been optioned and is set to film for TV.  Here is an example of a property worth investing in.  If it’s done right it’s a sure hit.  Cullen Bunn is a superstar writer in the making and this is his best work to date.  Issue 1 is fast becoming a 50.00 book but eventually people will realize that the first appearance of The Sixth Gun was in the 2011 FCBD issue.

More Cullen Bunn,

Immortal Weapons 2

Early works by this amazing writer are sure to see significant gains in upcoming months.  This comic is part of a 5 issues limited series written by a variety of the industries best.  Mr. Bunn wrote issue 2.

Deadpool 1000, The Damned ( good luck finding these! ), Captain America 616 Variant and his first published comic work in…

Futurequake 4

Future Quake 4 Cullen Bunn First Pro Work

American Vampire 1 ( 2010 Diamond Retailer’s Summit Edition, cover by JIM LEE )

Scott Snyder has quickly become the hottest writer in comics. His resume may be short but it’s full of quality writing.  In an era full of talented writers it can be very difficult to stand out but Mr. Snyder has done it.  Collectors are flocking to his Detective Comics run and they should but there are few other comics he wrote worth picking up.  Iron man noir 1-4 is a good place to start and those books can be had for pennies. I have previously mentioned the Human Torch 70th Variant One-Shot ( his earliest pro work ) and now this issue variant with a Jim Lee cover!

I would also buy issues 2-5 and the 2nd print for issue 1

Buy: Iron Man 10 ( 2nd Print )

Another film rumor about the appearance of Pepper Potts Rescue Armor appearing in Iron Man 3 has been circulating the web.  Will it happen? If it does this is the one one to buy!

Buy: Masters of the Universe 1 ( 2nd Print )

Another great second print that’s tough to find and worth every penny!  Look in back to find out why Invincible collectors!

Sell: Peter Panzerfaust 1,2,3,4

This over hyped comic is well written but poorly illustrated. With a TV show from the BBC in the works Image has created a nice big bubble! Trust me when I say it’s not the next WD so sell high!

Hold: Green Wake 7

The true first appearance of Peter Panzerfaust  will have no ceiling if the show is a hit and it will cost you between 2-10 dollars instead of 200.

Sell: Revival 1 and all issue 1 variants

Hold: Image FCBD Sampler

Sell: Fatale issue 1

Buy: The Walking Dead 92 ( First Jesus )

It seems this new character is going to be a major player and we have all seen the value of key WD first appearances.  Oh and Fatale first appearance is here too.  Even if you have to pay out it’s worth it in this case.

Buy:  Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth, Nowhere Men 1, Non-Player, Multiple Warheads & Prophet 21 ( variant only ).

Tales of Suspense 50 ( First Mandarin )

Personally I think the Mandarin is a terrible villain but movies from Marvel turn crud ( whiplash ) into back issue gold and this book will be no different. His first appearance is not mired in confusion like Darkseid and the actor playing the master of the rings is one of Hollywood’s best!
