Comic Broker Report – June 2014

Wormwood Gentlemen Corpse 1  ( Hundred Penny Press Edition )

This series has been on fire recently. Issues of the LO-FI magazines reprint material are scarce and sell for a premium. If you are looking forward to the animated series and collect the comics do not forget to track down this rare printing of issue 1.

Dreadstar 1 Marvel/Epic

Despite not featuring the first appearance of major characters from the series the first Marvel/Epic comic issue is starting to move.
Walking Dead 103 Variant

Clone has been picked up by Syfy and is easily one of the better Image titles out today. It should translate well to the small screen. Issue 1 has a variant but if you want the series first appearance this WD issue is the one to buy.
Note: There is a very limited DF remark variant for this issue.

Ghosted 9

Nailbiter is already a hot item on Ebay.  Issue 1 is selling for 10-15.  It’s damn hard to predict the next big thing as most modern titles fall off after a while and lose readership. Will Nailbiter defy the odds?  If it does pick up Ghosted 9 as it previews the new Image series.
Superman Confidential 1

sup confidential 1 first tony gallo

The man who first exposed Superman to Kryptonite  makes his debut in this excellent DC series. The Utopia Casino, which Tony owns was an Easter egg in the Man of Steel film. Only time will tell if Mr. Gallo gets cast as a villain in Zack Syder’s highly anticipated follow-up. This one is cheap and relatively easy to find. Buy and hold.
Chew 8 ( first Poyo )

This comic should be back on collector radars. With Chew confirmed for an animated treatment, fan fav Poyo looks to play a prominent role.
Swamp Thing 67

A new trailer for the Constatine TV series has debuted and people are excited. Issues of Swamp Thing 37 and Hellblazer 1 are starting to sell well. Look for this issue  to jump when collector realize that it previews Hellblazer 1 although I am not sure if Papa Midnite is in the preview.  If so this issue would then become his true first appearance.

Tales of the New Teen Titans 1

Scott Snyder has announced Cyborg will be in Superman/Batman and that means DC Comics Presents 26 will no longer be easy to find.  In all fairness it has been a collectible comic for some time.  But this issue can still be found in back issue bins all across America.  Buy it now and hold on tight because it gives readers the origin of Cyborg!

Nova8 ( 2008 )  First appearance of Knowhere

Some time ago I mentioned this little gem that not only features one hell of a cover but is also the first appearance of fan favorite Cosmo.  Well now it might be important for another reason.  Recent GOTG images allude to the possibility of the Celestial head Knowhere as a setting for Starlord and company.

Single Issue Hot Pick-Transmetropolitan 23

DC has made some big announcements this past weekend concerning their upcoming films.  Among these are Fables and 100 Bullets.  Early issues of 100 Bullets can be pricy but this forgotten gem from Warren Ellis should be a lot easier to track down.

Current Guide Price: 5.00 NM

( First Appearance of 100 Bullets )

Preacher 51 also has a preview of 100 Bullets which came out at the same time as this issue!

Preacher Checklist

As  the investcomics president pointed out this past weekend, it looks like Preacher has been optioned by AMC.  That’s good news for fans of a series many  hold in high regard. Complete runs of the series and minis always sell high.  Look for these along with others from DC

Preacher Preview ( 1994 )

This eight page preview of the upcoming series was a flimsy publication. It had a ridiculously low print run making it extremely hard to find in NM. It often demands more money on the back issue market than issue one of the regular series. At this point I think it’s fair to say that this is the first appearances of the major characters from the series and features one of the more iconic Copper Age covers by Glenn Fabry.

DC Direct Currents 85 ( April 1995 )

DC used to distribute these slim preview style comics that often features pin-ups, previews and other treats. Despite the fact that most were printed on glossy paper they too are rare in high grade. Most people simply tossed them into the garbage. This issue features the cover to preacher 1!

Absolute Vertigo ( Winter 1995 )

Another comic that previewed new series from Vertigo, people realized later that this preview of Ennis and Dillon’s series also predated issue 1.

Absolute Vertigo Promo Poster

The poster came out before the comic and Jesse Custer is on the cover.

Hellblazer 60

This one is tough because there are some die hards who believe that Genesis was conceived here but even Ennis had said that he just used the same idea twice and that there is no connection. Ennis’s run on Hellblazer is worth owning anyways so you  might as well pick this one up too if you haven’t already.

Vertigo Gallery: Dreams and Nightmares ( 1995 )

Unbeknownst  to many this pin-up gallery features an early appearance of Jesse Custer and friends by Dillon. It has a release date of 1995 but lists no month. Seeing that Absolute Vertigo had a publication date of December 1995 at worst this issue came out at the same  time as Absolute Vertigo. It probably hit shelves prior to Absolute.

Preacher 1 ( first appearance of The Saint of Killers ), #2 ( first appearance of Arseface) ,12 ( bagged ), 13 ( first appearance of Herr Starr )

Early issues of the regular series hold value.  First appearances of Fan favorites Arseface, The Saint of Killers and Herr Starr should see gains. Issue 12 was available in a bagged edition which is a tough score. Normally I would include the last few issues of this series but in this case the conclusion was highly anticipated and print runs were not as low as other series who’s last issues become rare due to cancellation.

Comic Broker Report – More Modern Heat

The Comic Book Broker’s Report ( March )

By Topher Seal

This month is sort of a sequel to last month’s article concerning modern comics and the ridiculous prices being paid for new books.   If you love trading in volatile markets then this current comic market is the place for you.  Many collectors may be weary of investing at this time because of the similarity to an infamous bubble from the past.  Anyone who remembers the bad girl/Valiant/gimmick days can attest to what I speak of.   I always suggest caution when playing in the modern arena but many of these books have significantly lower print runs that the 90’s books and the writing is far superior to most of what was produced in those days.  ( Many Valiant titles are the exception here.  If you have never read Harbinger,  Archer & Armstrong or Solar then now is as good a time to buy sets as any. )

Invincible 19

imagesThis one hasn’t blown up quite yet but it’s already  scarce due to it being part of one of the greatest superhero comics of the last 10 years.  So what’s so special about it now?  Yet to been confirmed, the similarities are hard to ignore as it is likely the first appearance of the Nowhere Men!  This book came out so long ago that it makes it a very interesting collectible.  Many previews or first appearances happen within the first few months of the title’s release.  In this case the situation is so odd you just have to love Image for it.  They continues to keep putting out great comics like the Nowhere Men.  If prices for early issues continue to skyrocket then this puppy is going to be huge.

Also see the Walking Dead 102 for a color preview of the Nowhere Men! ( look for the 2nd print also!)

Helheim  NYCC Sketch Variant

If you’re like me and you don’t put a premium of many modern variants then here is a rare exception.  Cullen Bunn’s been on fire with the Sixth Gun and much of his recent Marvel work has been great.  His latest work pits viking against Zombie!  That’s a money maker if I have ever heard of one.

Black Beetle 0,1 & DHP Vol. 2 11

dhGritty Pulp comics have a special place in my collection so when Francesco Francavilla’s Black Beetle appeared in DHP 11 I instantly knew he had a hit on his hands.  Francesco has done a limited amount of work but his earliest appears to be in the 1997 Comic Code Illustrated.  Early issues are already drying up so act now.

Judge Dredd Megazine 322

Diggle and Jock’s new Image mini is off to a good start.  Great art and writing almost always generate some buzz especially when the Image logo is on the cover.  The odd thing about this comic is that is was serialized in the Judge Dredd Megazine 322 some time ago.  They are nearly impossible to get in the states.  Buy and hold.

Peter Panzerfaust 8,9

pp imagepppsHook has made his debut in the beloved Image series set to be a TV show.  Issue 8 is his first appearance and 9 has a black cover making it very difficult to find in high grade.  That incredible close up on Hook’s hook doesn’t hurt its chances on the back issue market either.  It’s not often you see such rapid price increases but issue 9 was selling for 20-30 at online auction the day it came out.

Captain America Reborn 6 & Avengers 5 ( 2010 )

Both of these books have extremely rare variants.  If the Age of Ultron is popular with readers look to these two books for the Ultron War’s earliest references.   These issues that look to the future are always big with collectors.

Note:  The Ultron War was mentioned first via blackboard/timeline that has since been a bit overused.  One of my favorite splash pages that peek into the future is in The Amazing Spider-Man 695.  Check it out!

3 Story: Secret Files of the Giant Man ( Dark Horse )

$(KGrHqJ,!jYFDhpjMmUvBREEolh8sg~~60_57Last month I briefly touched on Matt Kindt’s Mind Mgmt and how it has been optioned by Ridley Scott.  If you haven’t read the series I suggest you buy the trade because there is no chance you will be able to purchase this book for cover anywhere online.  It’s a great read and the fact the Matt has included story elements that are specifically NOT being reprinted will make the individual issue that much more valuable.  I also recommend some of his earlier work such as the Pistolwhip Series and this gem above ( also the first appearance of Mind Mgmt. )

and finally…

With Grant Morrison’s Batman run coming to an end with Batman Inc. Vol 2 #8  there are many rumors surrounding the fate of Damian Wayne.  Damian has become a favorite among those who love Batman.   If Morrison kills of the bratty boy wonder it would be a real shame since it’s very hard to create new characters that generate  long lasting popularity.  One of the most satisfying aspects of the young Robin is the possible future where he has sold his soul to the Devil??? to protect Gotham the best way he can.  No matter what happens some of these issues are not that hard to find but that can change real quick.

The Mignola black & white variant above IS very hard to find.  Good Luck!
