Sometimes it really does feel like the 90’s all over again. Not only the comic industry, but it sure looks like Marvel has taken a page from the 90’s history books. Venom is all the craze once again. Once upon a time it was Wolverine, then it was Ghost Rider, Darkhawk (for a hot minute), Punisher and of course Venom. Well, Venom is back and he’s everywhere…..again. Venom Inc. #1 has the symbiote “doubling down” on its previous host, Marvel heroes and others.  Creators involved here are Dan Slott, Mike Costa and Ryan Stegman.
The new Iron Spider (Aaron Davis) and the new Sinister Six debuted in Spider-Man #234. This week Iron Spider takes it to Miles Morales in Spider-Man #235. Looks like Miles is in for quite a fight.
Doctor Stephen Strange rocks the boat a bit (Marvel U) within the last pages of Doctor Strange #382. Our guess? It would seem as though the new Loki Sorcerer Supreme is kicking some major as* and the Doctor has to do something drastic to stop it.
Captain America faces off against the all-new Swordsman in Captain America #696. The original Swordsman first appeared in Avengers #19 (1965). It says so right on the cover too. A very silly looking dude back then, right?
Interesting story starting up from writer Sina Grace in Iceman #8; Iceman vs. Iceman part 1.

The first Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team-up brought on a lot of interest, buyers, readers. So what worked before has to work once more. That’s usually the thinking of a good sale. This week the return of this odd team-up; Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #1. This time Bane winds up in New York and, well….Batman and the Turtles will take their fight to New York to get Bane out of there. Creators James Tynion IV and Freddie E. Williams II.
DC Universe Holiday Special 2017 #1 is a who’s who in the comic industry. So many great creators lending their hand in making this holiday special. Too many to list here. One mention of importance is the “return” of legendary writer Denny O’Neil. Denny will write an original Batman story in this special. Incidentally, Denny O’Neil’s last original work dates back to 2010’s Detective Comics #866. Accompanied by a ridiculously cool Walt Simonson cover. Welcome back Denny!
A new story arc beings in Deathstroke #26; The Fall Of Slade part one. Creators Christopher Priest, Carlo Pagulayan and Jason Paz.
Writer Tom King takes readers on a two-part journey regarding the on again, off again relationship of Bruce and Clark. Batman #36; Superfriends part 1, focuses on how these two heroes “inspire” one another. DC claims this story will have readers talking…..as in a buzz. The story is derived from Tom King, so you know it will be good anyway. Art by Clay Mann.
The Deadman #2 comic will play Jedi mind tricks with readers and collectors on Wednesday. All across local comic shop land, many fans will be holding the cover up to a light (a “certain light”) that will reveal a hidden message. No really, not making this up. Go into your shop on the busy Wednesday evening and watch everyone holding up the Deadman #2 comic to the light. They’ll do either one of two things, smile and say, “oh that’s cool” or they’ll frown and say, “oh wow, that’s lame.” Either way, DC will get you to do what they want, you’ll do it and that’ll create the curiosity around the book. Bring attention to it, having a few consumers putting it in their stack because it was a neat trick they’ll want to show mom or their girlfriend when they get home. Here’s a bulletin, they’re not going to care, but you do so that’s what matters most. See, the Jedi mind trick from DC this week will work…..you’ll see.

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks; Indie comics do not always show up on Ebay right way. Please check back on a regular basis, some of the smaller print indie books usually list after new comic book release day or a few days after.
Suicide Squad #1 Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald Aspen Comics variant cover is sold out. Look for this comic to spike in the aftermarket. Please remember (message for new speculators), this is only a cover of a comic book. Nothing on the inside of this comic warrants a very high price tag. A pretty cover should not command a lot of your money. Ever. A rare variant can always be reprinted later on or maybe you can buy the poster art of the cover, don’t spend lots of money on a modern that will not pay dividends down the line. Spend that cash on a solid Bronze Age first appearance instead or wait on a new printing down the line. Please understand that we’re not saying to NOT buy variants, but be smart in what you are doing. Once the market corrects itself on the down side, these pretty covers will have no substance within the inside pages to warrant a high priced ticket. A true collector will not pay big money for a “limited” variant cover. They’ll SELL them to any potential buyers, but would not hold it as a long-term. Aspen Comics will release 12 different variant covers available to order for the first time.
Chapterhouse Publishing re-releases their free comic book day Captain Canuck,Year One #1 comic for $1.99 price tag with a new David Finch cover. It’s sold out. Creators Kalman Andrasofszky, Jay Baruchel and Marcus To.
A new team comic from Action Lab Entertainment looks like a winner. Check out The Consultant #1. Creators Jason Sterr and David Maine.

Superman #34 is actually Superman #800. So says the Tony Daniel variant. Furthermore, Is this the first appearance of Lois Lane, Female Fury? If so, take a look-see and decide if it’s worth your $3.99 or $4.99 or whatever they will charge for this 800th issue.
Writer Jimmy Palmiotti ushers in a new era of The Jetsons along with artist Pier Brito. Anyone who grew up during the airing of this show during the 1960’s and reruns during the 70’s, knows that it was must watch television. Jetsons #1 will be must read comics. The new style here will have many historians of the old Jetsons show trying to untie their panties from bunching up. Relax, seriously. Just a cartoon and everything is open to anyone’s interpretation. Breathe fanboy, breathe.

If a collector wanted to purchase any of these first appearances from this new team put together by Iron-Spider, it can be a bit costly. Except for one. Can you guess which character would cost you less than five bucks in some places? This is easy, right? Of course, it’s The Spot. The Spot first appeared in The Spectacular Spider-Man #98 (1985). The Spot looks totally cool on the cover posted here too. Thanks to cover artist Patrick Brown.
InvestComics recommended that collectors get on top of Power Pack #1 (first appearance) a few years back and then a movie announcement hit recently. We pull this off quite often. Boy we are good to our fans! The announcement of a Power Pack movie was well received. Now let’s see how the return of the Power Pack comic book fares. Power Pack #63 from writer Devin Grayson and illustrators Cresta and Marika. June Brigman, the original Power Pack #1 (1984) artist treats fans to a variant Power Pack #63 cover.

Throughout the years InvestComics has explained that there is something within the speculative/collectors market that is just as important as the first appearance of a character. A characters second appearance is not only a fun get, but sometimes very affordable. Sometimes not, therein is the chance to make your decision as an investor to jump in or not. We cannot make that decision for you, nor would we. We will simply guide you and the rest is up to you.

….and we implore you, please read or know the disclaimer before reading on. Thank you.

Journey Into Mystery #84 (1962) – Here’s the second Thor appearance. Cover credits; Jack Kirby/Joe Sinnott. Stan Lee writes. Also the first appearance of Jane Foster.

Flash #147 (1964) – With Zoom (Reverse Flash) doing so well on the television series, it would be a nice get right here with his second appearance.

Amazing Spider-Man #38 (1966) – Mary Jane’s second appearance. It also happens to be the last Steve Ditko issue.

Strange Tales #127 (1964) – InvestComics informed readers many years ago about the first appearance of villain Dormammu before the Doctor Strange movie ever came to fruition. Here is the second appearance.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 (1964) – Here’s another villain InvestComics touched upon as well, but still hasn’t come to light……yet. Check out Mysterio’s second appearance right here. This comic is also the first appearance of the Sinister Six.

New Mutants #88 (1990) – Cable will be hitting the big screen eventually. We all know his first appearance, here’s his second.

Strange Tales #111 (1963) – The Doctor Strange movie will be huge. Once again InvestComics gave readers a heads up way before the movie was ever spoken about, but now we’re letting you know that since the first appearance is out of reach a bit, why not go for a second appearance? Also the first appearance of Baron Mordo and Asbestos Man.

Daredevil #2 (1964) – This comic has TWO second appearances. First; the Daredevil Netflix series is hot hot hot. No telling where they will go with this character. Will there be a reboot movie with the current actor Charlie Cox? It would be a first within the comic book movie industry (modern) for a television superhero actor to make the leap. It seems fitting that Charlie Cox would make that leap to the big screen. Daredevil’s second appearance was in the second issue of his self titled book. A great book to own. This comic also holds the second appearance of Electro! A 4.5 graded on Ebay right now at $149 is a fantastic buy.

Weird War Tales #10 (1973) The first professional work. A backup story. DC owns the distinct honor of discovering him. Thanks DC! Although Marvel would have eventually come along.

Sword of Sorcery #5 (1973) The first solo cover right here.

The Haunt of Horror #1 (1973) The first Marvel work came in this number one issue magazine in a backup story.

Detective Comics #437 (1973) Walt was a fantastic Batman artist/writer. This was his first Batman book, but he didn’t do the Batman character. He did another character that he would “own” and that would be the Manhunter. In a backup role here again. This is also the first appearance of the New Manhunter.

Detective Comics #443 (1974) It is here that Walt would get he first crack at the Batman character on pencils.

Master of Kung-Fu #24 (1975) This is the first official Marvel “comic book” work for Walt. He would be one of three artist on this book.

Pizzazz #10 (1977) Simonson went on to do a lot of Star Wars comics in his career. This is the first Star Wars art he ever did and it was in a magazine. This was also very early Star Wars art regarding comics. Only a few months after the number one Star Wars comic debuted, this magazine debuted. It featured different Star Wars stories in the magazine by different creators each month. Issues 10-13 were all Simonson.

Rampaging Hulk #1 (1977) Here’s the first art on the Hulk character. It was a magazine.

Young Love #125 (1977) Here is one of those that will have you scratching your head. Simonson did the cover for this romance comic.

Thor #260 (1977) Almost all creators get linked to a certain character(s) during their career. Some creators find a niche with a career and they take it to another level, thus making them “that creator” on that particular character(s) that fans relate to. This comic here is not that comic. Well, not yet anyways. Walt Simonson does not find his grove with the Thor character until six years later, but here is the first pencils and a collaborated cover (Joe Sinnott) on the Thor character. More on Thor in a bit…..

Batman #300 (1978) Here is a Batman anniversary issue Walt penciled.

Machine Man #6 (1978) Marvel finally finds Walt a solo cover to do with collaborating with anyone. Jack “King” Kirby penciled and wrote the issue.

Detective Comics #500 (1981) Anniversary issue. Cover art with Joe Kubert, Jim Aparo, Dick Giordano, Carmine Infantion, just to name a few.

This is King’s first story ever adapted into a comic book type genre. Essentially it’s the first Stephen King in comics.

Marvel and DC Comics Present: The Uncanny X-Men and The New Teen Titans #1 (1982) One of the coolest crossover team-ups in the history of Marvel/DC. Walt cover art and pencils. Claremont writes. Do you need anything else here?

Marvel Age #1 (1983) Why this series doesn’t get looked upon more by collectors is still an absolute wonderment to me. Crystar cover by Simonson.

Red Sonja #1 (1983) An awesome Red Sonja cover from Walt here.

Thor #337 (1983) Walt Simonson pencil/ink/writes and does the now iconic cover. It’s the first appearance of Beta Ray Bill. What more can be said about this comic that hasn’t been said yet? This was the game changer for Walt Simonson. This was THE character he owned. Walt made Thor HIS character here. There’s Kirby and the there is Simonson. Walt made Thor #337 the hottest comic on the planet back in the 80′s. It is still a book to own if you don’t already. Beta Ray Bill will eventually make it to the big screen and when he does, look out here. The iconic cover alone is enough to make collectors want it. Walt Simonson solidified himself as a creator right here. As said earlier, every creator has that character(s) that they own. Most creators also have that defining moment in their career where they catch something just right and fans begin the process of bringing them to that next level as they so fittingly deserve. This is that defining moment for Walt Simonson. Thor is Simonson’s, the fans spoke out in 1983. Walt has officially arrived.

The Comic Broker’s Report – December 2013

Instead of wasting your time with sharp wit and wonderful one-liners I’m getting right to the point this month.  The fact is, I grew up collecting comics in the most over-printed, over-hyped era the world had ever seen.  There was no internet, Better than Ezra sucked 14.99 a cd out of too many people’s pockets and the Arch Deluxe had it’s short run ( man I miss that burger ).  So trust me when I say that I cannot believe I am recommending some of these comics.  But I do love a bargain and dollar bin fodder like these offer little risk for max reward, something this collector chews on heartily.

The Kindred 3 ( first Team 7 )

index

DC speculation runs wild this week.  I’m more of a DC collector than anything else but Team 7?  The comic world has gone apeshit crazy if u ask me.  These issues are littering back issue graveyards all over the country.  I recommend the variant ( not pictured here )

Note: The Gen 13 Variant this variant connects to was once a back issue darling.  My how things have changed…

Booster Gold 1

images

Now here’s  a DC property I can get behind.  Booster is a character that could translate very well to TV.  Unfortunately  there aren’t many Booster comics heating up the back issue market.  Issue one of the original series is actually not that easy to find in high grade and is his first appearance.

WildC.A.T.S.  1 ( First Grifter )

Gold edition, Ace Edition, 3D edition

indexWildCATs01-3D$(KGrHqFHJBsFGznKheugBR1Ecs!RJQ~~60_35

I just cannot bring myself to suggest that the massively over printed issue one of this series will ever see significant increases in value.  But Grifter was once a popular character and that matters.  Anyone who has the Ace edition, 3d edition or the rare gold variant ( many were signed by Jim Lee ) should expect gold down the road, that is if Grifter ever gets a live treatment.

Note:  There are some who would say that Grifter first appeared in Malibu Sun 15.  Seeing as Spawn’s appearance on the cover of issue 13 goes for big money I am inclined to agree.  Finding it is going to be impossible though.

124756_20090609093648_large

The Brave and Bold 25 ( First Suicide Squad )

300px-Brave_and_the_Bold_v.1_25

Here’s a golden oldie you will never find cheap.  But for those who have it rejoice!  Like the other DC properties mentioned above the first appearance of this team already has value.  A TV series or film would only make those who don’t have it cry that much harder.

Batman 12 Limited Capullo Variant

bmcv12

I mention this one again for one simple reason.  Scott Snyder is no fool.  Adding a back up story in the most recent  Batman: Zero Year issue can only mean one thing-he has big plans for the Rows, not just Harper.

Green Lantern 81 ( First Young Justice )

360807-4363-43049-2-green-lanternindex140 $T2eC16dHJGkE9no8iPO!BRDE2(5Ebw~~60_35

There are two covers and two DC Universe UPC variants for this issue of the Green Lantern.  Why should you care? If the recently rumored Young Justice CW adaptation gets the green light you can thank me when you sell your hoard and put the kid through community college free.  Ok that’s not gonna happen but you can always flip any cgc 9.8s into something that matters like a Following Poe mask

Foll47

or a full run of something like this,

index

Note: Anyone looking for my personal top ten collectible masks list, message me.

Hitman 8

images

I can find no conformation either way that the Saint of Killers appears or does not appear in this, and some other issues of this incredible series.  With all the hype over an AMC Preacher show  this one could be a sleeper.

Uncanny X-Men 221

With all the heat surrounding X-Facor 5 and 6 it shouldn’t be long before supplies of Mr. Sinister’s first appearance  run dry.

3648_20060728002120_large

Amazing Spider-Man Annual 5 & the JC Penny Variant

Amazing_Spider-Man_Annual_Vol_1_5

If you have seen the trailer for Spider-Man 2 then you know why I am recommending this issue again.  The  first film cut Peter’s Parent’s footage but dad show up in the recent preview.  It looks like the secrets Pete gave up are going to be central to the storyline and that’s a good thing for those who believe annuals matter.

Spider-Man 2

You are not seeing things, that was the Vulture wing suit in the trailer for ASM 2.  Got issue 2?  If not now is the time to buy.
