Cover Gem of the Week: Hello Darkness #10Miguel Mercado.
Once again, Miguel Mercado reminds everyone why he’s one of the best in the cover game right now—by painting pure nightmare fuel with elegance. Hello Darkness #10 doesn’t just tap into horror; it leans in with a flirtatious smirk. The central figure? A pale-faced, red-lipped femme fatale who looks like she’s been kicked out of clown college for being too unhinged. Her smeared black eye makeup trails down her cheeks like a mascara-laced confession, and she’s got the smirk of someone who knows she’s about to slam the door on more than just metal.
She’s perched against a metal body container—probably for the deceased, but Mercado leaves just enough ambiguity to make you wonder if it’s a cremator or a body locker. Either way, toe tag says “goner,” but plot twist: those eyes deep in the darkness of the drawer are wide open. Yep. Someone’s very much not dead and staring right at her. And she knows it.
The pose is casual—too casual. One hand lazily rests on the drawer’s handle, mid-close. Her painted black and red hair screams theatrical insanity, and that low-cut outfit leaves zero to the imagination. The mix of seduction and sociopathy is textbook horror noir, and the lighting plays perfectly into the narrative Mercado’s subtly telling. This is a cover that makes you pause and stare—and maybe check if your own closet is shut.

Miguel Mercado is a digital painter and illustrator from the Philippines known for turning comic covers into fine art. His career took off through his highly polished digital style—clean, photorealistic lighting, with a heavy focus on facial expression and atmosphere. Mercado has provided covers for nearly every major publisher, including BOOM! Studios, Marvel, and DC Comics. His work has graced issues of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Over the Garden Wall, and Spider-Man, to name a few.
In 2020, BOOM! Studios locked Mercado in for an exclusive 20-cover deal across their top-selling titles, recognizing his rising popularity and the instant collectibility of anything with his name on it. His art stands out not just for technique but for storytelling—he has a way of capturing tension in a single frame, and this week’s Hello Darkness cover is a chilling example.
Whether it’s magical girls, mutants, or maniacs, Miguel Mercado knows how to deliver covers that collectors chase and fans can’t forget.
