Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

If you’re a collector seeking new blood in the industry, a reader looking for a new edge of storytelling, then DC has a book for you this week. New Talent Showcase #1 will ‘showcase’ some of DC’s new talent. This comic is definitely worth a look, but that $7.99 price tag may keep some away. Don’t let it deter you too much, it’s not often fans get a comic full of new talent showing off their craft. Maybe one or two or many break out and become a superstar in the industry. Maybe this is their first work. So don’t pass this one shot. DC is probably testing the market here to see if there will be more books like this in the near future. Be sure to make lots of noise at you local comic shop(s) if you want to see more down the road. The last time DC Comics had a New Talent Showcase title was in 1984. Here are some of the names associated with that series as either early work in their career or their first work.
Steve Lightle, June Brigman, Javier Saltares (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #10 -1984), Norm Breyfogle (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #11 – 1984), Graham Nolan (Early first work; The New Talent Showcase #14 – 1984).

Check out three DC annuals this week; Batman Annual #1 with writer Tom King and art from David Finch. This annual, as DC Comics puts it, will have a ‘showcase of top talent’ within these pages. We love Batman, we love beginnings (number one issue), love the regular creative team, and we love that there will be a load of other talent in here too. Injustice Gods Among Us Year Five Annual #1. Three separate stories going on in here. One that features fan fav Harley Quinn. She dons the cover too. Superman Annual #1; Written by Peter Tomasi and pencils by Jorge Jimenez. Guest starring the Swamp Thing.

On the coattails of the popular appearance on the Agents of Shield television show, Marvel begins an all new series starring Robbie Reyes as Ghost Rider in Ghost Rider #1. We’re really digging the variant covers, but there is a solid reason to buy this comic on Wednesday. The first appearance of a new villain in a backup story. Here’s a quick fact, did you know that no solo Ghost Rider comic has ever reached issue number 100? Maybe this series bucks that trend. We’ll see.

Ivx #1 sets the wheels in motion for the upcoming comic series Inhumans vs. X-Men.
Marvel’s Deadpool Back In Black #4 Ron Lim cover sure is an eye catcher.

Black Mask Comics releases a new comic series and we all know what that means right? In case you’re a new reader or one of the few who do not know, most new Black Mask Comics sell out fairly quick and the aftermarkets love them. So this week fans get No Angel #1. Written by Eric Palicki and art from Ari Syahrazad. A story about a Hannah Gregory as a possible mistaken identity…..being a alien from space. Looks as though she takes matters into her own hands (see cover). The preview book of No Angel #1 is selling for a premium in the aftermarket. Jump on this comic. Invest wisely. Read comics.

Valiant Entertainment introduces a new member into their family this Wednesday. Savage #1 debuts the new character in his self-titled book and we think it’s going to be a warm welcome on new comic book day. With talents like writer B. Clay Moore and art by Clayton Henry and Lewis LaRosa, this comic is a no-brainer to check out. Look for early sellouts and demand bringing multiple printings down the pike.

Mask Mobile Armored Strike #1 from IDW Publishing should satisfy the need for all of the 80’s fans of the original MASK Series. The Paul Pope variant cover is stellar. A 50/1 ratio. The original DC series; MASK #1 debuted in 1985. IDW also debuts a new Transformer series; Optimus Prime #1. Looks as though an introduction may occur. Artist Kei Zama and writer John Barber bring us the action.
Revolution #5 brings everything together for the IDW universe. An important issue if fans want to see the birth of a continuity universe.

The very first episode of Sal’s Minute Of Mediocrity has arrived! The best one minute (or so) comic book review show on the planet. As each episode is released, Sal will lasso you in like Wonder Woman and make you tell the truth! What does that have to do with the video you ask? Absolutely nothing, but he will rope you in to watch because he’s awesome and it’s only a minute (or so) of your time! Check out the first episode below!

….With all of the female lead characters coming from Marvel (and many other publishers too) these days, they are going with a third rate character this time in Mockingbird S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1. Mockingbird is not a new character by any stretch, her first appearance was 35 years ago and up until a week ago that first appearance lay in some one dollar long box. So with the recent announcement of Mockingbird getting her own spin-off television series, it will only peak the interest of her first appearance in Marvel Team-Up #95 (1980). Steven Grant writes and a Bob McLeod/Frank Miller cover help to make this a nice collectors item even when it was in the one dollar long box. Incidentally, InvestComics did mention to take a peak at Marvel Team-Up #95 back in 2009.

A sure to be sold out comic hits Wednesday; Deadpool vs. Thanos #1. There are some very funny variant covers accompanying this release. Marvel’s Figment series fared very well last time out, so Marvel will go back to the well with Figment 2 #1. A new character debuts in Dark Tower Drawing Of The Three Lady Of Shadows #1. And with the new Dark Tower movie(?) announced, this could be something to keep an eye out on.

A new villain named Gridlock makes an appearance in Bat-Mite #4.

Our friends at Cosmic Times have turned up a hot comic release this coming Wednesday. Must check out Void Of Heroes #1. Not only a fantastic dark sci-fi futuristic story, but it’s actually based on the mobile game from Tunnel Ground Inc. So you better get on this comic because it’s sold out at the distributor already.

SKYBOUND

Skybound has signed an exclusive film deal with Universal. The should ignite some speculation concerning the current Skybound catalog.  Here are my pics:

Beyond Invincible and the Walking Dead there are other comics produced by the Skybound imprint that are pretty darn good!

Witch Doctor Preview #0

The medical horror comic series from Brandon Seifert first appears in this preview.  The subsequent mini is worth a look also.

1069837

Invincible #43

OK there are so many Invincible books to pick ( including many others from other Image titles like Noble Causes, Savage Dragon, Tech Jacket, MOTU etc.)   Issue 43 is one I have not mentioned before though.  Anissa appears on the cover to issue 44 and she has become an infamous Invincible antagonist.  But the cover to issue 44 appears at the conclusion to issue 43.

Clone

I thought this one was dead in the water especially since Orphan Black has a similar concept but according to the Skybound’s deal this is still in development.

Others to look at:  Thief of ThievesManifest Destiny, Ghosted, Brit, Science Dog

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Lexus SDCC (First Melinda May)

If you haven’t been watching Agents then you are still missing out.  I keep telling people this because the show has become must see TV for Marvel fans. Filled with obscure Marvel U references and gripping action, the show is both fun and part of the larger Marvel film world.  Though Coulson is a fan favorite and Daisy/Sky/Quake has made issue 2 and 5 of Secret Wars worth some cash it is Melinda May who is increasing become the show’s powerhouse character.

Unwritten #12

Izombie is a hit with viewers and as a result House of Mystery Annual 1, issue 1a and 1b have seen serious increases  in cost.  Unbeknownst to many Izombie was previewed here too!

STAR WARS SPECULATION

Here is yet another reason to suggest the SB paperback-first appearance of Lando who is getting his own comic!

Star Wars Tales 23 ( photo cover ) is the first appearance of Revan.  Kylo Ren’s costume sure looks similar to the EU character.

23845_20060112163339_largefirst revan

Star Wars: Clone Wars 3 ( First Captain Rex )

One of my favorite characters from Star Wars is Captain Rex and it was just announced that he will be returning on S2 or Rebels! THis is his first comic appearance and the cover is sick!

Galaxy Quest: Global Warning 1

One of the greatest cosmic comedy films ever is coming to TV via Paramount!  There are a limited number of comics available.  This one is a key.

COVER OF THE MONTH

Suicide Squad 67

Other than issues 1,6,23,49 there aren’t too many comics from this series worth collecting.  When DC decided to resurrect certain titles for final issues during the Blackest Night crossovers fans were treated to one of the better concepts the company has ever come up with.  This one just might be the best SS cover I have ever seen!

In 2014, InvestComics made a lot of speculators very happy with more money in their pockets. Not only did we accomplish that, we covered a record 14 comic conventions as press (tons of video and photo coverage throughout the site and Youtube), had articles appear on Yahoo!, started the first and only weekly top ten comic book list on BuzzFeed, Interviewed some cool talents like; Alex Segura (Vice President publicity/marketing of Archie Comics), Promoter of the Connecuit ComiConn Mitchell Hallock, Coo of Vet-Tix Eddie Rausch, Exclusive Producer Bernadette McDaid; Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, and Michael D’Alessio of Atlantic City Broadwalk Con. Our New York Comic Con 4 Day Ticket giveaway contest was a big success too.

All and all a huge year for InvestComics. Lots more was covered, but I simply cannot list it all. If you’re a follower of InvestComics, you know how we roll. Look for us to expand in 2015 in several areas. It’s going to be awesome!

A big big thank you all that have supported us throughout the year. It’s been our pleasure to put a smile on your face and some extra loot in your pockets. Remember to always have fun and to invest wisely.

If I have left anyone off the thank you list, it is completely unintentional and I truly apologize. I will shout you out on Facebook if you let me know!

An extremely light week hit the Hot Picks. Everyone wants to start their New Years early!

Shield_InvestComics (4) Shield_InvestComics (1)S.H.I.E.L.D. Will try its fourth attempt at an ongoing series this Wednesday. This speculator does not see the series lasting very long, but we’ll see. The television series right now is the reason for propelling the new title out. The television series has showed some weakness in the past and will not last that long either. We’ll see about that one too. Not saying the series or the comic are in no way worthy, but the comic is only here because of the television show. The new comic series will probably outlast the TV series. Shield (2014 Marvel) 4th Series #1 will have a plethora of variants accompanying it. We stopped counting after ten. Ridiculous yes we agree. One variant in particular has some ears pointed up is the Deadpool party sketch variant by John Tyler Christopher. This $200 variant is sold out. It might be a nice variant to have in ones arsenal when the Deadpool movie rolls around. Signed and graded (9.8 or higher of course). If you don’t want to go that high with your cash, how about the awesome $20 Mike Deodato Jr variant? This comic probably won’t command very much money in the long run, but a nice variant by Mikey nonetheless.

Since most comic companies won’t be releasing most of their regular titles this week, they are going overboard with the variant. Shield case in point number one. Case in point number two is East Of West #16. This successful Image title will give readers a special oversize issue starting the new major story line in it. At last count, nine variant covers here. Is this necessary? The best part for East of West fans here is the Jamie McKelvie variant comes in at only $15. The rest of the variants are regular price.

East_of_West_InvestComics (1) East_of_West_InvestComics (2)Miracleman for Marvel hasn’t gone exactly according to plan as far as demand and clamoring goes. No one is really talking about this book right? Anyway, All New Miracleman Annual (2014) #1 will feature artwork from Joe Quesada and that is always a get. The eye candy this dude creates is unbelievable.

One can always count on IDW to come up with a crazy awesome team-up. To end the year they’ll give us Star Trek Planet of the Apes (2014 IDW) #1. No words to say here except that there is an awesome George Perez cover to check out too.

Thank you all. From the entire InvestComics team we wish you a happy and safe New Year.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

Comic Broker Report – February 2014 (part 1)

This month it’s all first appearances!  Enjoy!

Thor 337

lorelei

Not only is Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show bringing Sif and Deathlok to the small screen but we can also look forward to drooling over Lorelei, the sex crazed daughter of the Enchantress!  Anyone who has high grade copies/newsstand editions rejoice!  Fans of Beta Ray Bill  should be pleased  as an increase in value for a this comic is probable.

New Guardians 2 of 12

index

1736155-snowflame

On occasion a comic comes out of nowhere and blindsides even the most savvy collector.  So where have all the copies of #2 of this forgettable series gone?   Fans of SnowFlame, the cocaine powered villain, have bought most of them.  He only appeared in this comic so until someone writes him into the New 52 this is his first and last appearance.  The good news-you will have better luck finding this comic in a LCS rather than online.

Detective Comics 27 ( New 52 ) has been burning up the back issue market.  But with multiple variants that the majority of fans have no shot at owning unless they are willing to drop a car size payment, I say pass.  But if you love the new and creative character appearances I suggest these cheaper alternatives:

Oh and who is Clayton Parker?

Batman 448 – First Lark

Batman448

In the future Lark has fallen in some heroic way or she wouldn’t be enshrined in the Cave of the Batmen!

Showcase 96  #3

528871-10455_4_003

The Wings of Truth first appear in the Detective Comics issue 27 ( New 52 ) but it looks like they are the evolution of The Birds of Prey who first appeared above.

Talon 0 – First Calvin Rose/Talon aka The Gothamite

2610759-talon_cv0_ds

Teen titans 7 ( New 52 )

245901_20121021163434_large

Much like Lark, Harvest is shown in Detective Comics 27 and looks to play a critical role in the DCU for the foreseeable future.

Batman Beyond Unlimited 2

1052421

Luke Fox/ Batwing aka Flying Fox

2259325-bb003_pg020

Luke Fox has one of the coolest Batsuits I have ever seen put to paper.  Here he’s a little long in the tooth but imagine all the wonderful adventures he will have from now until he slides into the forgettable frame above!

Batman 9 – first Strix ( Mary Turner )

2334250-batman_9_cover_1000

Despite all the variants  for this issue I recommend it for the debut of Strix.  Now in the Birds of Prey ( and possibly the future Wings of Truth? ) she is a complex character with ties to the Court of Owls.

Note: Strix also appears in issue 9 of Batgirl ( new 52 ) which was released in the same month.

Other Comics:

Elektra Assassin 2 – first John Garrett

24422-3630-27180-1-elektra-assassin

One of my favorite actors is coming to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D!  If you can recite Bill Paxton’s pre-drop speech from Aliens then you and I would get along.  Are you wondering who’s going to take on Deathlok? It’s safe safe to assume that Agent Coulson will bring in this cybernetic enhanced heavy to do the dirty work!  Look for his first appearance in this classic Marvel comic!

Captain America 607 – first Beetle ( Lincoln )

1283940-204536_20100630160032_large

Put that badass Beetle suit on a woman and you have a recipe for an undervalued villain just waiting for collectors to notice.

Adventure Comics 69 – first Miraclo

308795-3105-123051-1-adventure-comics first miraclo

The CW is still on track to adapt Hourman.  This one isn’t cheap but rumor has it the Miraclo formula will be an essential component to the show’s formula!

Daredevil 115

index

Growing debates as to what a true first appearance is can be as fun as they are frustrating. Do you believe Hulk 180 is Wolverine’s first appearance?  If so you may want to look at the end of this Daredevil comic and let me know if your mind changes.

World’s Finest 6  ( first Mentallo )

205399-18006-115314-1-world-s-finest-comic first metallo

Are we being tosses a red Herring from DC?  Latest rumors put Mentallo alongside Lex Luthor as the main antagonists for Superman VS Batman film.  My money is still on Doomsday or at least a cameo of the Kryptonian behemoth but if I’m wrong this issue is gonna jump.

BONUS!!!

Sandman 5 – first Merv Pumpkinhead!

sandman 5 first merve pumpkinhead

Why you ask?  Cause he’s def the greatest pumpkin related characters in comic history!

If that is Nimrod in the most recent Days of Future Past trailer and on the cover of Empire, you had better stock up on these!

Comic Broker Report – January 2014

2014 is here and that means a lot of people have Holiday money to burn.  Now is the time to sell if your a speculator.  This mostly applies to over-hyped image books, Marvel and DC variants and comics connected to upcoming film and TV projects.

My new year’s  checklist:

10. Re-bag and board my whole collection.

9. Watch Bladerunner once each month.

8.  Buy a Lying Cat T-Shirt for the wife.

7.  Vacation to Colorado.

6.  Buy every copy of Teen Titans 44 I see under 5$

5.  Steal this,

index

4.  Build a functioning puppet.

3.  Find or knit a Tanooki Suit for my son.

2. Sell all walking Dead Comics I own

1.  Buy all Sandman comics I NEED.

 This months suggestions:

What if 33 X-Men Annual 1 ( 200 1 ),  X-Men 4

images$(KGrHqVHJEQFJGGNQ9WHBSUj6mplqw~~60_35What_If_Vol_2_33

Collecting first appearances of major villains is one thing comic aficionados love to do.  The 90’s didn’t produce a plethora of memorable characters though.  Omega Red is one that stands out.  The only problem-his first appearance, X-Men 4, was massively over-printed.  It’s still a good bet long term if you can get the newsstand edition graded 9.8 or better.  Funny thing though-he also appearance in these other two comics in the same month. Look to find newsstand editions of them as well.

Marvel Age 97

Marvel_Age_Vol_1_97

I’m not sure if you know this but there is a secret legion of Darkhawk fans out there. The most sought after appearances are the venom issues and the later issues due to low print runs.  Issue one is also prized in cgc 9.8 or better because it is believed to be his first appearance.  But it is not, this is!

Uncanny X-Men 221

index

Mentioning again…

X-Factor 5,6 have lead to speculation on the X-films of the future.  Get your copies of X-Factor 24 and Mr. Sinister’s first appearance before it’s too late!

Note:  The Mark Jeweler for this is quite rare.

Iron Man 223 ( First Blizzard )

d

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has grown with each episode and if fans can be patient it may turn out to be the cornerstone of Marvel’s Movie and TV universe.  Blizzard may be a second rate Marvel villain but his introduction on the show should spark interest in his debut.

Tales of Suspense 75 ( first appearance Sharon Carter )

15975_20060925031806_thumb

The last time I mentioned this was in regards to Batroc,  now with a possible Sharon Carter show in the works it has become a comic worth owning for multiple reasons.

47 Ronin 1-5 ( Dark Horse )

$_35

Film adaptations often lead to sales spikes in the shark infested waters of Ebay.  In this case the film stars one of the worse actors in history and has received less than stellar early reviews.  Sell em if ya got em.

Marvel Age 20

index

This issue of Marvel age predates Secret Wars 8 thus making it an earlier appearance of Spidey’s black costume on a cover.

Man of Steel 17

Superman_Man_of_Steel_Vol_1_17

Soon enough folks are going  realize that the Doomsday appearance to own is right here!

The Amazing Spider-Man 256

2378_20050928235549_large.jpg

Can a movie handle this many villains?  Adding the Puma seems like a strange idea but so was the prospect of Blade film and we know how that turned out!

Foom 2

index

Ok I cannot take any credit for this discovery but it looks like Wolverine may have appeared prior to Hulk 180 and was also created by someone else.  Marvel used this fan Magazine to poach ideas from kids using contests they created.  At this point three Marvel characters have appeared from these contests.

Comic Broker Report – October 2013

The slow market continues…

Here are ten tips for October:

1.  Do not invest heavily in DC 3D covers.

2.  If you find new 52 Batman issues in high grade at cheap prices buy and flip for decent money.

3.  Invest in Harley Quinn.

4.  Do not rent, purchase or recommend this film:  The Colony

5.  Eat at Dell Taco if possible.

6.  Convince your girlfriend or wife to dress as Mother Russia this Halloween!

7.  Give Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. your support.  It will only help more comic               properties get developed.

8.  Do not care what the fox says.

9.   Support my Kickstarter for Halloween candy is the shapes of razorblades, syringes, pocket knives, prescription medication  etc.

10.  Play Farcry 3: Blood Dragon if you have not already done so.

These are the comics I am recommending this month.

Letter 44 1 SDCC Variant

LETTER44-1-BW-PREVIEW-COVER

Charles Soule and  Alberto Alburquerque’s sci-fi series from  Oni Press released this SDCC convention exclusive of Letter 44  issue 1 prior to the October regular issue.  If you are looking for the next big thing here it is.

Also check out this press kit from Oni!

Marvel Two-in-One 42

Marvel_Two-In-One_42

Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered this week and the ratings were huge.  Reviews are mixed but most can agree that Agent Coulson stole the show.  Writers have set up some intriguing mysteries surrounding familiar Marvel storylines.  If  the Journey into Mystery name drop got you exited then so will Project Pegasus!

Ghost Projekt 1

ghost-projekt1

Here’s one I may have missed the boat on!  A possible TV adaptation in the works usually meant back issue heat and in this case it’s an inferno.  Mini series don’t see the kind of price gains that regular running series often do but when big studios are involved and the printing is low few things can halt the frenzy.

The Avengers 158 ( first Graviton )

15555-2128-17336-1-avengers-the

Is he Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’s  first super villain?  Buy this issue just in case!

Star Wars film speculation is only going to intensify each second we get closer to the new films from Disney.  The current rumors still center around Solo’s twins and if you read my articles you know right where to go for their first appearance.  Here are some of my favorites!

Star Wars 10 ( first Darth Krayt )

Star Wars 10 ( first Darth Krayt )

Star Wars Episode 2 Attack of the Clones #3 ( first Count Dooku )

Star Wars Ep 2 Attack Cones 3 ( first Dooku )

Star Wars: Jango Fett Open Season ( first Tor Vizsla )

Star Wars Jango Fett Open Season 1 First Tor Vizsla

 Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children

Have you seen A Blue Valentine or A Place Beyond the Pines?  Both films were critical successes and now the director is set to adapt what?  If you remember this twisted series from DC look for prices to jump real soon.  The keys are very hard to come by.  ( issue 13 has part 2 and is still cheap online )

index12index33

Journey into Mystery 102 ( first Sif )

Journey_into_Mystery_Vol_1_102

Sif looks to have a much larger role in the upcoming film and that’s definitely a good thing.  Nothing should make fans happier than expanded character development for Thor’s supporting cast.

JOHN CONSTANTINE

An NBC show in the works =back issue raids across the country.  Swamp Thing 37 is still pricey but other early issue can be found for small money.

Swamp Thing  37, Crisis 4,  38

 UPDATE

Who is Jake Ellis?  Personally I don’t care but with movie speculation being what it is look for this rare series just not Online.  Issues have been swallowed up.
