Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Secret Wars #1 9.8 (2015). Here is a neat modern graded under a hundred bucks. This high grade modern has three signatures on it, two of which are creators of Deadpool. The sigs; Rob Liefeld, Fabian Nicieza and Johnathan Hickman. All that for $99? Not too shabby.

Regular readers of the weekly InvestComics Hot Picks know how we pinned the title Deadpool And The Mercs For Money down and predicted the outcome of all the players in the previous series getting their own solo comics. Well, not only is Now Foolkiller #1 coming out this week, but Deadpool And The Mercs For Money #5 features the newest team, lead by Domino, getting their act together from the previous issue. We discussed some of the first appearances of Domino’s new team HERE. The old team’s first appearance’s were discussed HERE.
Foolkiller; Greg Salinger, first appeared in Omega The Unknown #8 (1977). Cover by legend Gil Kane. The Now Foolkiller #1 will be accompanied by many variants. The Rob Liefeld B&W Deadpool variant will garner much attention in the aftermarket.

Marvel begins their newest Avengers title(s) this week; Now Avengers #1 (written by Mark Waid) and Now Occupy Avengers #1. Not crazy about the ‘Now’ in the title in front of the Avengers, but it’s still better than a ‘Totally Awesome Hulk’ title. So many variants to choose from, but it’s the inside of the Now Avengers #1 comic you may want to check out too. Someone dies and you have a chance to find out who first……by getting to your comic shop earlier than everyone else. The Alex Ross Now Avengers #1 variant is a beauty.

If you think Marvel will keep away Wolverine or Thor or countless other original characters away from the fray, you’d be sadly mistaken. Now Unworthy Thor #1 begins the comeback(s) of Marvel’s original elite. Writer Jason Aaron and artist Oliver Coipel on Thor’s (possible) return.

On the topic of covers, Michael Choi Champions #2 white cover is an eye catcher. Death of X #3 cover from Aaron Kuder is amazing. Elektra on the cover of Spider-Man 2099 #17; by Francesco Mattina.

InvestComics has been saying it for years, even before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon. A Moon Knight movie! Right?? It’s right there on the cover of Moon Knight #8. No? Okay, we’re reaching, but maybe Marvel planted a seed here for the fans? Wishful thinking, but in the mean time, stock up from our Moon Knight checklist.

Superman #10 will be the comic everyone is talking about this week. The kids of Supes and Bats meet up for the first time. Boy of Steel and Boy Wonder, along with their daddy’s will make for an interesting read. The regular Patrick Gleason & Mick Gray cover is not only fantastic, but it tells the readers what we may be in for. The variant Andrew Robinson cover is very reminiscent of a now iconic Jim Lee Batman cover back in 2003; Batman #612. Looks as though Andrew gives us another angle of the choke hold. We love this cover.

DC Comics Bombshells #19 marks the return of the Batgirls. This team first appeared together in DC Comics Bombshells #7.
Batman #10 continues the ‘I am suicide’ story line. The story that has Batman putting together his own Suicide Squad team. Part two here.

Motor Girl #1 (Abstract Studios); a new series from Terry Moore. Mercy Sparx Year One #1 (Devils Due Publishing). Mulligan #1 (Grind House Comics).

Superstar artist Jim Lee is back on a Batman book. Batman Europa #1 will be a four part mini-series featuring top talent in the industry. Written by Matteo Casali and Brian Azzarello. This four part series will be a great read as well as getting your eye candy. What more can a comic fan ask for here? Batman vs Joker by premiere creators, Azzarello, Lee, and more? Yes this is a no-brainer.

Let’s not forget what Jim Lee brought to the table back in 2002/2003 with his iconic Batman run starting with Batman #608 and also creating one of the most iconic Batman/Superman comic covers of all time; Batman #612. He did previous Batman books before those though. And if you’re a Jim Lee fan, you must check out the extensive InvestComics Jim Lee Creator Spotlight checklist right HERE. You’ll find some great Jim Lee books there.

Bizarro #6 will introduce a new villain; Queen Tut. Martian Manhunter #6 features a new female martian character.

A new DC/Vertigo title to check out; Red Thorn #1.

The speculator will have to be on alert this Wednesday for the new Image comic Huck #1. With Mark Millar writing, it is not inconceivable to think that a movie studio will come knocking and before you know it, Huck is announced as a possible movie project. This happens quite often in the Millar camp. The artwork will be done by superstar Rafael Albuquerque. A very simple story here about a man (Huck) with superpowers (assuming) does something nice everyday, but his neighbors keep his good deeds hush-hush, until one day…..! The Image solicit is pushing this comic as something fans have never seen before and will love it. (*knock knock knock) Get the door, we think Universal Studios is knocking.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Although Marvel’s Black Knight character has had several first appearance as different alias, Dane Whitman would be the one with the most credits. First appearing in Avengers #47 (1967), Black Knight will appear this Wednesday in his own series Black Knight #1 starring as……you guessed it, Dane Whitman. The new series will be written by Frank Tieri. Here’s something to ponder. Marvel (Disney) has yet to even tease anything regarding the “knights” genre. Not even remotely, nothing, zilch, nada. If EVER, Dane Whitman will be tapped as the lead character. He’s been a main staple with the Marvel Universe a long time and he’s been in a ton of Avengers books. Yes indeed, a ponder and a speculative nugget. You’re welcome.

Only three issues in and some silliness has crept into Captain America Sam Wilson #3. This issue features the return of Capwolf. Yes that’s correct, Capwolf. Maybe writer Nick Spencer makes this work, who knows? If you feel captivated by the notion of the Capwolf character, you can get his first appearance in Captain America #405 (1992).

Is there any reason to be excited about The Mighty Thor #1? We all know Jane Foster is Thor. Now we simply don’t care anymore, the climax is over. We’ve been dealt the cards, we saw what we have and we folded. We’re done here. Do we need to carry on the nonsense of having Thor as a female character now? We say, not for long. The whole idea that Jane is battling cancer and losing is a very sad thing. She’s a beloved character, but this may give Marvel the “out” in order to bring back the Thor we all know and love. If sales don’t meet expectations, which we don’t think they will, then Jane will eventually die and Thor will come back. Ms. Marvel #1 on the other hand has more upside if there were to be a side by side longevity comparison. Stronger character traits (not history) and overall more appeal.

At first glance, New Avengers #3 looks as though Superman is on the cover! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s a Marvel comic!

Sticking with the perplexed department here, what in God’s green earth is Secret Wars Too #1 about?

Marvel will give Spider-Woman another go; Spider-Woman #1. The longest lasting series for Spider-Woman ever was 50 issues. Her second longest? 18 issues. So lets all hope (no pun intended) writer Dennis Hopeless gets the ship right a bit this time. Starting off things with a pregnant Jessica Drew on just about all the covers. That in itself feels a bit odd no? Here’s hoping she has an easier labor than the series will.

Captain Canuck is killing it with each issue. This Wednesday will be no exception with Captain Canuck #5 focusing on bad as* Kebec. She was introduced back in issue #0. Read Captain Canuck or you’re missing out.

Not much going on this week as far as speculation is concerned, but lots of great titles to pick up and read. A slow week in a speculation market is also a fantastic time to look through some long boxes and search for some of the recommendations InvestComics has feed in the recent weeks.

Superman Batman Logo DC

So before we get to the Hot Picks, how about the most anticipated panel at the San Diego Comic Con? The Marvel Studio Panel. Well to say it Avengers Age of Ultronwas “spectacular” would be an overstatement. To say it was great would also be an overstatement. This panel was supposed to be the one to rip the doors off the internet. It fell extremely flat. Trotting out actor Tom Hiddleston in his Loki costume to start off the panel, making the crowd go wild, but delivering absolutely nothing noteworthy in the context of a breaking news story. Not that anything was expected from Tom, but Tom became a diversion to the BIG picture. Fans went wild and then nothing. New clips of the new Cap movie and Guardians movie. What about some more news about the speculation of Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Antman, and even Vin Diesel?! Marvel in typical fashion churned the hype box so tightly that it became a huge dud. That’s UNTIL Josh Whedon came out! Cheers!! Crowd goes wild! Yes!! This will be it!! Joss will announce something crazy right?!?! Josh says “Avengers Age of Ultron” will be the title of the new Avengers movie. Wow really? That’s it?? Sorry guys, but you dropped the ball on this one. The biggest stage of all comic cons and that’s all we get? It’s been a while since you’ve dropped the ball (in the movie department), so we’ll give you a pass here. DC Entertainment actually outshined Marvel yesterday in the movie news announcement department with their Superman/Batman 2015 scheduled for release in 2015. Now THIS was breaking news. This was worthy of a fan getting excited about. Not prancing out actors and actresses of your movies everyone knows about already. Who cares really? Getting a first look clip of the new Cap or Guardians movie, now that was cool, but Marvel hasn’t shared that with anyone else except for the fans in Hall H. DC said checkmate at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Good job guys/gals, it’s been a while since you’ve trumped Marvel in “breaking news” as far as the big screen goes.

Now let’s get to some Comics you should check out this week shall we?

InvestComics Hot Picks

[scrollGallery id=281]

Batman #612Anyone remember that sketch cover Jim Lee did back a few years ago where Superman is chocking the hell out of Batman? It was actually a second print, Batman #612 to be more precise. That comic actually commands more money in the aftermarket than does the first print. Shorter print run, plus it’s totally bad ass. This week however, DC goes back to the drawing board (no pun intended) with Superman Unchained (2013 DC) Directors Cut #1. This $5.99 comic will deliver the “director’s cut” of the original sold out number one issue. This series has some serious creator star power and will show no signs of slowing down. It’s best to get in on this series before those back issues start getting out of reach as far as dollars and cents go. Not too sure if the aftermarket will sustain the demand in the long haul, but for now it’s a nice series to get your hands on any variants that are available to cash them in for say…..a first appearance of Darkseid, Deathstroke, Rocket Raccoon, etc. Don’t expect too much from this priced high comic at $5.99. It’s a harder when you pluck down six bucks for what essentially is a reprint with a sketch cover, bells and whistles. Get variants of this series, that is where the money is waiting to be made.

Speaking of a comic that is critically acclaimed, Matt Fraction has turned around a once blah Marvel character into a force. Hawkeye could never really find his place in the Marvel Universe, but Matt has done it. Fraction has become what Miller was for Daredevil, McFarlane was for Spidey, Synder is for Batman, Adams was for Lantern, and on and on. These creators have become synonymous with their work on these characters. This week Hawkeye (2012 4th Series) Annual #1 continues that trend for Matt Fraction as he embeds his name in the Hawkeye character.

Marvel Team-Up #1Last week (or the week before?) the InvestComics Hot Picks spoke about the ridiculous onslaught readers may have to be subjected to with the word “Superior” on too many comic titles. Well here we go again. Superior Spider-Man Team Up (2013) #1 comes out us as a regular ongoing. The series will feel much better with Peter Parker at the helm, but until then you can enjoy looking at the cover to Marvel Team-Up #1 to the right here. As Archie and Edith would say “Those were the days.” Who’s Archie and Edith you ask? Ugh I feel old!

On the topic of team-ups we have two very cool ones happening from Dynamite Entertainment and IDW. Check out Army of Darkness vs Hack Slash (2013 Dynamite) #1 and Rocketeer Spirit Pulp Friction (2013 IDW) #1. Fun reading on Wednesday here!

Mass Effect Foundation (2013 Dark Horse) #1, Lobster Johnson Scent of Lotus (2013 Dark Horse) #1, and Gamma (2013 Dark Horse) #0 round out the books to check out this week.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to sign up to the InvestComics Newsletter. News and a new Contest (a signed comic!) coming up soon.

See you soon, Invest wisely.

Welcome to InvestComics Batman Checklist (Part 1 of 3)

Yes as promised, the new Batman movie is coming out on July 20th and InvestComics has your Batman checklist. As accompanied the Spider-Man checklist, a small video was teased yesterday regarding all of the picks that you will be reading about. Not all of the comics made it into the video this time around, but a nice montage nonetheless. Take a look at some of the great artist that have graced us with THEIR image of Batman…..some fantastic comparisons of the different vision of these great creators over the years. Some have been left out, but not on any merit of simply missing them! If you have a favorite that was omitted, please let us know in the comments below!

Although Batman has a 25 year head start on Spider-Man, Do you think Bats rouge gallery pales in comparison to Spidey’s? Let the debate begin! That said, take a look at the InvestComics Spider-Man checklist Part 1 (HERE) and Part 2 (HERE) and notice that Spider-Man’s first 50 books have some significant first appearances. Of course there are lulls within the series, but it seems to happen more often for the Batman series than it does for Spidey. This is absolutely no knock on Batman here, just something that was more noticeable during the research through the Batman books.

So because Batman does have a jump on Spider-Man by 25 years, the InvestComics Dark Knight Checklist will run in 3 parts. First part here will be the self titled Batman comic, second part will be the Detective Comics and the third will be some cool extra appearances and other Batman comics. So without any further ado…..

Batman #391 – First Modern Age Batman issue.

Batman #400A huge anniversary issue. A who’s who in this issue as far as creators go. A very special issue to own.

Batman #404, 405, 406, 407As Todd McFarlane was a game changer to the Spider-Man franchise (artistry), Frank Miller was to the Batman franchise. Not so much for these particular comics though, but one of the most important 4 part storylines in the Batman run done by Miller here. “Year One” began the inspiration for some many others creators to start their own “Year One” story lines. That all said, the Batman comics and persona in general took a turn onto a path that has never looked back beginning here.  …..more on Frank Miller in part 3 of the InvestComics Dark Knight Checklist.

Batman #414Following Frank Miller only 7 issue prior comes Jim Starlin. Jim Starlin writing Batman, nuff said.

Batman #417Jim Starlin then goes on to write a fabulous storyline called “Ten Nights of The Beast”.

Batman #426, 427, 428, 429 Then Jim Starlin comes back to put the comic book world on its head in 1988 with the storyline called “Death in the Family”. Fans got to vote to either off Jason Todd or not. The Joker won. Jim Starlin talks about the death of Jason Todd in an Interview on InvestComics TV right HERE. He also talks about Thanos HERE in part 1 of the 3 part interview. Cool stuff.

Batman #436 It didn’t take too long for DC to get into Robin mode again. The introduction of Tim Drake right here.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid from ALL available Ebay sellers on Ebay.

Batman #442Tim Drake puts on the Robin Costume. Wow is the costume still warm? Geez.

Batman #475 The first appearance of Renee Montoya, a.k.a. Question II.

Batman #489First Jean-Paul Valley as Batman.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid from ALL available Ebay sellers on Ebay.

Batman #497Well it finally happens in this issue. What so many have tried to do before. Break Batman’s will and break his back….literally. Bane accomplishes this wonderful task that so many before have failed at. A very important comic in the Batman series here as it’s the catalyst to the Dark Knight Rises movie coming out on the 20th. Why is this comic so affordable at only $5? Well at one time, this comic was as hot as a commodity can get. It’s obviously cooled down significantly due to the fact that the comic is a very accessible one to get. Vengeance of Bane one shot would be the way to go. More on that in Part 3 of InvestComics Dark Knight Checklist.

Batman #608Jumping some 100 plus issue later we come up to the next man responsible for bringing Batman to the “next level” if you will. Artistically speaking that is, thank you Mr. Jim Lee.

Batman #612Jim Lee is also responsible for one of the most prolific Batman covers of all time, at least in the modern era. Superman choking Batman…..classic.

That’s it for now! See you tomorrow with Part 2 of InvestComics Dark Knight Checkist!

Invest wisely.
