I’m too busy buying comics this month to really hit you with any more goodies than what I have here. Enjoy the holidays comic collectors!
Finally S.P.E.C.T.R.E. and it’s famous leader are returning to the silver screen! It’s odd but S.P.E.C.T.R.E. didn’t appear in comic form until this TPB which collects newspaper comics of Bond and his villainous foes!
Firestorm appears on The CW’s Flash and his comics start to move. Here is Firestorm’s first Flash cover and first appearance within a Flash comic.
Could this be the first appearance of Lark? Snyder won’t say but I am betting on yes. Grab this rare printing of Duke Thomas’s first!
It seems like every month I find a GOTG key I completely overlooked. Even though the Broker had a limited roll in the Marvel film this is his first appearance.
Daisy Johnson is all the rage. With copies of Secret War 2 selling well on Ebay collectors should start to look for other keys featuring Quake. She gets her handle here.
The Titans show has been changed to The Outsiders?! Well not quite. Another network may have been forced to change it’s title due to the upcoming DC TV show. Issue one on the acclaimed Winick series , the Outsiders was heavily printed but the real key here is this mini which led directly into the new Outsiders and Titans series!
The variant for this has a terrible cover but Marvel decided to include something very strange in this comic. As Hawkeye surveys what appears to be a Cosplay street party both the new female Thor and Spider-Gwen pass him buy. Is this the first appearance of Gwen Stacy from an alternate Universe in that sick new costume? Collector’s disagree and only time will tell but the fact is this book is the first appearance of the Spider-Gwen costume and it’s one of the more popular in recent memory.
From Hell a TV show?!?!? Sweet. Buy the first published strips in this forgotten anthology!
Suicide Squad 48 ( first Joker cover in Suicide Squad )
This collector is very skeptical of Jared Leto’s casting as the Joker. It’s not because I don’t like his acting but putting the Joker in an ensemble cast seems like a mistake to me. Either way any Joker connection to the squad is going to heat up the back issue market as proven by the HQ announcement.
Fairy Tale Parade 9 ( First appearance of the Snow Queen ) and first appearance of Elsa
As one of the more popular Disney characters in the last 20 years picking up the Snow Queen’s first is a smart move,
if you can find it.
Gotham by Gaslight
This classic work by Mignola features the first appearance of the Gaslight DCU. The Lex Luthor from that world will be playing a huge role in Fight for the Multiverse.
Do people ever get tired of spending enormous sums of cash on Deadpool comics? The answer still appears to be no. This one-shot has escaped my clutches for some time and is now racking up big sale numbers on Ebay.
Over the Garden Wall Special 1 & 1:15 Variant
Kaboom’s adaptation of the CW’s new show has been a rare find. Both covers are worth a quick flip if your LCS has em’!
The preview is in Adv Time 33
This is the variant cover, there are two other covers.
Superman Family 192 ( First appearance of Lor-Van )
Who knows what grandfather or grandfathers the Krypton show will use? Start speculating now and scoop up this one!

Reaction to this month’s article has been about as hot as my sister skinny dipping with a recently diagnosed thyroid problem. To make up for that I have decided to add some extra selections for this month. An update would have sufficed but it ballooned with a bunch of new pics and since become a part 2. Some of these may have already been spotlighted by others on the web and if that it true then those author’s are by far much better than me and should receive emails from any reader telling them so! Enjoy your Labor day weekend folks!
The Pulse 11,13
With A Jessica Jones show coming up on Netflix how long before Danielle Cage makes an appearance?
The Flash: Iron Heights
Girder is an obscure DC villain who first appeared in The Flash: Iron Heights, an excellent prestige format book by industry greats Johns and Ethan Van Sciver. The character has been cast to appear in the upcoming Flash TV show.
Flashpoint 1 2011
Farooq/Blackout is an even more obscure character than Girder. Though he appears first in the well printed/underwhelming Flashpoint 1 (also by Johns ) the issue is rare depending on which version you seek out.
Sketch variant, third printing, George Perez variant, SDCC and Canadian Expo edition
Tales of Suspense 59 ( First Appearance Jarvis )
Jarvis will be cast for the Agent Carter show. The famous butler to heroes first appeared in this classic series from Marvel.
Doctor Who Weekly 17 ( First appearance of Abslom Daak )
Fan favorite and Dalek Killer, Abslom Daak could finally be appearing on screen. His first appearance is really going to be tough to find in high grade though.
The Avengers 167 ( First appearance of Carina )
In the comics she’s The Collector’s daughter but if you’ve see the GOTG film then you know that she’s not to happy with her position. It’s great little role by an unknown.
The Flash 245 ( First appearance of the Floronic Man )
Del Toro’s Justice League Dark is going to feature many of DC’s best characters who deal in magic and mysticism. The legendary director has expressed a desire to include The Floronic Man. This is his first appearance.
Note: The Floronic man appears in The Atom 1 but he does not become the Floronic Man until this Flash issue.
Secret Six 7 ( first appearance of Komodo )
Arrow is looking to feature a ton of DC characters in the upcoming season including Komodo!
The Flash Volume 2 Issue 28 ( First Linda Park )
Green Arrow 17 variant ( First Komodo DC new 52 )
This variant is going to be the one to collectors will want. It also features Jeff Lemire’s writing debut for Arrow and that’s enough to make this reader buy! Simon Lacroix is an expert archer in his own right and may turn out to be one of the more exciting TV characters if he is adapted well from the source material.
The Eternals 7 ( First appearance Eson the Searcher )
One of the more obscure appearances ( and my personal favorite! ) from the GOTG film!
Hulk vs. Iron Man 2 ( First Extremis Hulk )
Captain Atom ( First General Wade Eiling )
The General is rumored to play a significant role on Arrow! This one may not see much in the way of market gains based on a higher print run but for fans of Arrow it’s a must own and can probably be found in a dollar bin.
Peter Parker, Spider-Ham 12 ( First Galactypus )
If you haven’t been reading Ultimate FF then you need to start right after you finish reading this.
Superman Day of Doom 1 of 4
Man I sure hate mini -series and not because of the format. For some reason collector’s frown upon them especially modern buyers and sellers. In this cases fans of the upcoming Gotham show and the Gotham Central comic should want this one.
The Amazing Spider-Man 657,658: First Future Foundation Suit
Yeah I know Marvel has overdone it with the Spidey suits but this one might be the best to date. Made of unstable molecules it never has to be cleaned! It’s really all the benefits of Venom with out the mind altering alien infestation!
Note: There are some second printings that are worth a look too. Superman ( New 52 ) 32: First Ulysses
So there are plenty of variants for the start of the Johns/Romita jr. era. The rarest is the 1:100 retailer but the Bombshell is my personal favorite and is actually affordable. X_Men Battle of the Atom 1: First Raze
The alternate future offspring of Wolverine and Mystique appears first here. As far as I am concerned the Deadpool hash tag swag variant is the one to buy! Secret Avengers 4: First Manifold
One of my favorite modern characters is Manifold. Nuff said. First Adam Hughes art: Eagle 6
Hughes cover are fast becoming favorites amongst collectors. If you are looking for his first pro work, he did a pin-up in this forgotten comic.
Venom 31: First Mania
It doesn’t matter how many times Venom replicates the results are almost always cash cows for Marvel. Mania is the most recent transformation of the pesky alien and she’s actually a pretty cool character. It helps that this was the best Venom series to date. Aunt Eunice: Batman 23.1
Ok I have major issues with this issue. Jackanapes is one of my favorite Morrison character creations so when DC decided to give him the lamest origin they could I cringed. I am currently rewriting his origin in my spare time and if DC fails to pick it up I am going to post in here for free and the few people who read my stuff can bash me at will. So why am I picking this issue? It turns out the Joker may have had an abusive Aunt who looks eerily similar to the Clown Prince of Crime! The Great Society: New Avengers 16
Hickman’s Great Society sucked me in right away I just can’t wait to see more of these characters especially Norn! 2000 A.D. 1170: First Jock published work
Much like Hughes, Jock’s work is catching on with fans ( see Detective 880,881 ). This issues of 2000 A.D. published his first pro work. Nightbreed 13: First Rawhead Rex
A TV show is coming for Nightbreed?!?! WTF! If you haven’t seen the cult classic I recommend it especially when the Director’s Cut is released. Epic published a 25 issue series with 1 and 25 being the toughest to get. Collector’s shouldn’t forget about this issue though with a sick cover and the first comic appearance of Rawhead Rex! If he makes it to show this one will explode.
Outsiders 11,12: Katana Origin
The Brave and the Bold 200 has her first appearance and is also a final issue making it key for this upcoming CW Arrow character. Even the DC Sampler 1 should see some love from collectors. I would include these issues in the Katana collection too.
There is nothing I can say today that will take me away from watching Season one of True Detective in one sitting. You should be doing the same, right after you read this though!
Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos 27 ( First Eric Koenig )
So Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. still has not sparked the interest as I had hoped it would. Uninteresting characters ( not including Bill Paxton ) will do that but when Patton Oswalt was announced as reformed Nazi Shield Agent Eric Koenig, I started to smile. The ranks of shield could start filling up with some wonderful characters from Marvel’s past but unless the clairvoyant is M.O.D.O.K. I sill won’t be pleased.
Young Men 24
Rumors of the Psychotic Captain America, William Burnside appearing as the villain in Captain America 3 have been a hot topic this week. Early reviews of The Winter Soldier have been overwhelmingly positive and Marvel has already started chirping about the third film in the franchise. So who is William Burnside?
The general consensus is that he first appears here although he may have appeared earlier in All Select 9 ( unconfirmed ). Burnside is an interesting idea for a film antagonist. He’s a man so obsessed with Steve Rogers he tries to become him! It’s also possible he could appear in film as The Grand Director.
Captain America 231 ( First Burnside as The Grand Director )
Captain America vol 5. 4, 7 ( 2006 )
These I like because of Brubaker, a man who will go down as the most influential Cap writer of the last 20 years. Though Burnside is only shown via flashback in 7 they could be key down the road. Considering the current importance of Issue 6, 6b,1 and the,14 reprint- I would buy now and hold. Cap 153-155 are a good Bronze Age bet too!
Amazing Spider-Man 359, 360
Collectors and buyers love them some ASM 361 and the 361 2nd print but Carnage’s roots can be traced back to issue 354. These issues remain key to the development of the character despite their awful covers. Also the cover to issue 361 is published first in issue 359.
Green Arrow ( new 52 ) 24 1 for 25 Variant Cover by Andrea Sorrentino
Arrow continues to surprise viewer with excellent episodes. Bodyguard to Oliver Queen John Diggle is the best example of this. He has become so popular that Jeff Lemire introduced him into the mainstream DCU in this issue:
but he actually appeared a little earlier in this 1:5 variant, out of continuity comic:
Note: There regular cover for this series is a photo cover.
Oni Color Special 2001
Ellen Page is going to star in Rucks’s Queen and Country. I have mentioned Queen & Country 1 & the FCBD issue when the property was first optioned by Fox. Don’t sleep on this issue though. It features a very Early appearance of Tara Chace and one of her only appearances outside of Queen & Country. The Powers appearances and cover don’t hurt either now that it too has been optioned by Sony for the Ps4.
Action Comics 835 ( first in Continuity Livewire ), Superman Adventures 5
Here’s some major speculation for you. Much like Squirrel Girl, I love oddball first appearances of cool characters that could see increases in value down the road. Livewire represents what I love most about comics and selling them for profit. The key appearances of Livewire are cheap. They are a safe bet and if you buy them you will probably want to hang on to them whether the market on them changes or not.
The Clone Wars 1 ( First Ahsoka Tano )
With Disney and Marvel taking over from Dark Horse a new era for Star Wars Begins. Over the last 20 years there hasn’t been much to rave about in the way of new characters though. Tano is one great exception. Grab her first appearance now especially if your a fan of a universe experiencing a major shift in structure.
Note: There is a variant for this limited to 1000 copies.
UPDATE: Are the Hunters the next big problem for Rick and company on AMC’s The Walking Dead? Seeing how appearances of supporting characters are lighting up Ebay, issues 61-66 ( Fear the Hunters ) will be even harder to acquire if this rumor proves to be true. 61 and 63 are already key books thanks to the first appearance of Chew.
Nova 19 ( First Appearance Marcus Daniels, Blackout )
Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues to add villains! I just hope Blackout doesn’t wear his original costume!
The Inhuman 11
Korath the Pursuer is coming to the GOTG film. Yay.
I’m not sure if this movie can handle any more characters but in this case the 35 cent price variant is the one to track down!
Instead of wasting your time with sharp wit and wonderful one-liners I’m getting right to the point this month. The fact is, I grew up collecting comics in the most over-printed, over-hyped era the world had ever seen. There was no internet, Better than Ezra sucked 14.99 a cd out of too many people’s pockets and the Arch Deluxe had it’s short run ( man I miss that burger ). So trust me when I say that I cannot believe I am recommending some of these comics. But I do love a bargain and dollar bin fodder like these offer little risk for max reward, something this collector chews on heartily.
The Kindred 3 ( first Team 7 )
DC speculation runs wild this week. I’m more of a DC collector than anything else but Team 7? The comic world has gone apeshit crazy if u ask me. These issues are littering back issue graveyards all over the country. I recommend the variant ( not pictured here )
Note: The Gen 13 Variant this variant connects to was once a back issue darling. My how things have changed…
Booster Gold 1
Now here’s a DC property I can get behind. Booster is a character that could translate very well to TV. Unfortunately there aren’t many Booster comics heating up the back issue market. Issue one of the original series is actually not that easy to find in high grade and is his first appearance.
WildC.A.T.S. 1 ( First Grifter )
Gold edition, Ace Edition, 3D edition
I just cannot bring myself to suggest that the massively over printed issue one of this series will ever see significant increases in value. But Grifter was once a popular character and that matters. Anyone who has the Ace edition, 3d edition or the rare gold variant ( many were signed by Jim Lee ) should expect gold down the road, that is if Grifter ever gets a live treatment.
Note: There are some who would say that Grifter first appeared in Malibu Sun 15. Seeing as Spawn’s appearance on the cover of issue 13 goes for big money I am inclined to agree. Finding it is going to be impossible though.
The Brave and Bold 25 ( First Suicide Squad )
Here’s a golden oldie you will never find cheap. But for those who have it rejoice! Like the other DC properties mentioned above the first appearance of this team already has value. A TV series or film would only make those who don’t have it cry that much harder.
Batman 12 Limited Capullo Variant
I mention this one again for one simple reason. Scott Snyder is no fool. Adding a back up story in the most recent Batman: Zero Year issue can only mean one thing-he has big plans for the Rows, not just Harper.
Green Lantern 81 ( First Young Justice )
There are two covers and two DC Universe UPC variants for this issue of the Green Lantern. Why should you care? If the recently rumored Young Justice CW adaptation gets the green light you can thank me when you sell your hoard and put the kid through community college free. Ok that’s not gonna happen but you can always flip any cgc 9.8s into something that matters like a Following Poe mask
or a full run of something like this,
Note: Anyone looking for my personal top ten collectible masks list, message me.
I can find no conformation either way that the Saint of Killers appears or does not appear in this, and some other issues of this incredible series. With all the hype over an AMC Preacher show this one could be a sleeper.
Uncanny X-Men 221
With all the heat surrounding X-Facor 5 and 6 it shouldn’t be long before supplies of Mr. Sinister’s first appearance run dry.
Amazing Spider-Man Annual 5 & the JC Penny Variant
If you have seen the trailer for Spider-Man 2 then you know why I am recommending this issue again. The first film cut Peter’s Parent’s footage but dad show up in the recent preview. It looks like the secrets Pete gave up are going to be central to the storyline and that’s a good thing for those who believe annuals matter.
You are not seeing things, that was the Vulture wing suit in the trailer for ASM 2. Got issue 2? If not now is the time to buy.
Blizzard is appearing on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Yay.

Welcome to the InvestComics Hot Picks
Allow me to reminisce a bit; I need to inform everyone on something very spectacular and drive home a point, if there is one…….
There comes a certain time within a startup business that one can be very proud of their personal achievements. Although there have been several for InvestComics (my fourth child), the ones that stick out are the ones I will cherish and tell myself “Hey you CAN truly make this happen”. Meeting and interviewing the mecca of all comic book legends; Stan Lee, twice! That’s one. Having Mr. Lee utter the words of “InvestComics” on video, forever captured, encapsulated in time, that’s two. Meeting and interviewing my late father’s artist hero (which he never met); Bill Sienkiewicz, that’s three. Starting the InvestComics Publishing Company, that’s number four. Watching the traffic numbers climb to a number you’ve envisioned, and then exceeding it each and every year, that’s five. If I continue I will run out of Microsoft paper, but you get the idea here.
Yesterday one of those pinnacle moments happened again. InvestComics was accepted to write articles for Yahoo!. It’s one of those moments like the aforementioned you pinch yourself and say “wow” this is kinda awesome. I will post on Facebook and the InvestComics website the links to check out. So be sure to click on the links when they are provided so you can bask in the glory with me. Also, I ask to please share them. The articles are very simple now, but will be enhanced; as did everything else with InvestComics when first started. Here are two links to the very first articles on Yahoo!. InvestComics Hot Picks – New Comic Releases 12/4/13
Just like last week’s InvestComics Hot Picks, not much in the back issue department to check out, but plenty of new issues to check out.
We start the week off with some first appearances that you may want to check out. Avengers (2012 5th Series) Annual #2013 will introduce Zamira. It’s always nice to make sure as a collector to pick up a first appearance in an Avengers book. Knowing full well that annuals don’t usually account to much, but the way things are rolling these days, you never know. So basically, I don’t care that it’s in an annual. Especially that it’s in an Avengers title. The speculator needs to get this comic. The Arrow series on CW is doing quite well for itself these days. The Green Arrow comic is faring okay though. With the release of Green Arrow (2011 4th Series) #26 this week, look for the introduction of some new villains in these pages. In the bizarre first appearance world of comics this week we have Longshot Saves The Marvel Universe (2013) #3. Check out Hulkvengers, Cosmic Carnage, Wolverine King of Vampires among others. Silly, yet once again you never know!
Batman Superman (2013 DC) #6 has our heroes dealing with Mongul. This big ol’ Thanos/Darkseid wannabe first appeared in DC Comics Presents #27 (1980). Check out that Jim Starlin Cover too! Oh of course Jim Starlin is involved with this cosmic character, hello?!
Having a name like Man-Bat is the equivalent of having the name She-Bat, right?? Well anyways, this week in Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #26, John Layman brings the She-Bat to the forefront. Here’s a quick trivia question, you must know the answer in 4 seconds flat. Ready? Where is the first appearance of She-Bat…..1,2,3,4 BZZZZ! Time’s up! The first appearance is in Detective Comics #407 (1971) by legend Neal Adams. Now that’s at least a reason to own the book, right?!
If you’re a fan of any Spidey comic these days you will realize that anything is possible with the way a storyline can twist and turn. There may be a similar path this week withSuperior Spider-Man (2012) #23. Marvel promises to have the most “cringe-worthy moment is Spider-Man history” happen in this comic. What is worth a statement like that? Well you’ll have to buy the comic to find out. “….In history”, that’s very mighty of them to say isn’t it? Superior Spider-Man #23 is a definite pick-up this week.
Amazing X-Men (2013) #2 features a fan fav Dale Keown variant that’s sold out at Diamond. Possibly a nice CGC Signature Series opportunity here. It’s a $40 variant, so score a 9.8 or higher.
Inhumanity (2013) #1 variant by Nick Bradshaw is sold out. Inhumans will be a hot commodity for a bit, so be on top of them. Check out last week’s InvestComics Hot Picks #296 for more on the Inhumans.
The popular on-line video game Hawken will get its own comic book this week from Archaia Studios Press; Hawken Melee (2013) #1. It’s almost sold out at the distributor, so be sure to check in on it.
Want to follow the story of three dogs surviving the extinction of the human race in Rover Red Charlie (2013) #1? Sounds a bit over the top right? With proven talent like writer Garth Ennis on this book, one cannot help but see what this is all about.
Another zombie book finds its way to the new release shelf this week; Deadworld Restoration (2013) #1. The zombie genre is going to die soon (no pun intended) with too many storylines focusing on dead people that walk around. See last week’s Hot Picks #296 for more on the zombie genre.
What’s not dead on arrival is the new red hot Noir comic from Dynamite Entertainment. Noir (2013 Dynamite) #2 is sold out at the distributor. Look for second prints to follow shortly.
There is a “thing” Dynamite Entertainment is doing that is kind of perplexing (not really, they’re making extra cash with these “rare comics”), but maybe cool for the collector/speculator? It’s a question because there is no reasoning behind why they continue to do this to certain comics (other than the cashflow) and they are extremely limited, but we’ll point out a few of them this week. Red Sonja Unchained #4 Cover D High-End Mel Rubi Blood Red Ultra-Limited Cover. There are only 25 of these in existence. The “number” in existence is the running theme here, so check out what applies here for these comics; Dejah Thoris And The Green Men Of Mars #5 Cover G High-End Jay Anacleto Risque Color Ultra-Limited Cover (50 Copies), Lords Of Mars #5 Cover D High-End Mel Rubi Risque Red Ultra-Limited Cover (50 Copies), Black Bat (2013 Dynamite) #7 Cover D High-End Ardian Syaf Black & White Ultra-Limited Cover (50 Copies), and Shadow Green Hornet Dark Nights #2 Cover E High-End Alex Ross Sketch Art Ultra-Limited Cover (25 Copies). I do suppose that if you want to spend a $100 on any of these comics you can, but how exactly do you make your money back on these “investments”? (If you want to call it an investment). Graded CGC Signature Series? How would one sell something that isn’t really in much demand? Getting an Alex Ross sig series on the Shadow Green Hornet Dark Nights #2 is a good start.
Sticking with the Dynamite Comics here, be sure to check out Legends of Red Sonja (2013 Dynamite) #2 with the Frank Thorne exclusive cover. It’s a much cheaper route than the above mentioned. A $3.99 comic limited to comic subscribers at their local comic shops and an initial limited print run. All that for $3.99, not bad.
Check your $1 bins at your local retailers collectors! iZombie from the DC’s imprint Vertigo will be a television series on the CW network. What more do you need to know?! The director? The stars? Who cares?? It’s zombie’s on T.V.!
What you really need to know is how to get all of the iZombie #1 comics out of your local shop (hiding in the $1 bin) and buy them before the retailer puts them on the wall!
Looks like GREEN ARROW won’t be the only DC Comics character hitting the small screen. For at least a few episodes, he’ll be joined by THE HUNTRESS. According to ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, The Huntress will be played by Australian TV actress Jessica De Gouw. This isn’t the first time on TV for either character, though these are new versions. SMALLVILLE featured a Green Arrow who headed the Justice League, and Huntress was the lead on the very short lived BIRDS OF PREY series.
