We’re about to approach a heavy topic here, but it’s reality and it’s part of this characters make up so we need to discuss it.

As racism is so prevalent these days, Stan Lee and the mighty Marvel crew back in the 1960’s were tackling the issue head on through funny books. They obviously did not stand for the hate mongering that existed so front and center back then. They took a stand. Not to say they don’t today, but back then taking a stand on racism was more of an outside the box thing to do and a noble one at that. As it is noble today too.

Nowhere is the topic of racism more predominant than with the character Black Panther. The first African born superhero character debuted in 1966 and Marvel Comics made sure the readers knew that racism was going to be a huge part of the character development. The Marvel crew took the same path during war times with Hitler and the Nazi’s. Showing how the hatred will always lose because of the ignorance, the non-education, the intolerance, and the emotional disconnect toward humanity.

Yes the Black Panther character is, if not one of the most important comic characters to ever be created. He wasn’t an alien from another planet with super human strength, he doesn’t have mutant powers, no he was not accepted because of the altering difference of powers he possessed over a human being or the knowledge of him being an alien, he wasn’t accepted because the color of his skin. Sounds ridiculous to even write that.

Although we’ve all come so far, there is still more work to do. Racist are not born, they are taught. It’s an infectious disease that spreads because of the rhetoric gospel taught by ignorance. Wake up it’s 2015.

Below is a checklist of some key appearances by the Black Panther. As always, there will be books that are not listed. Please help the collectors by writing your entry below in the comment section if you want to contribute.
