InvestComics Hot Picks #473

As the new Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 movie hits, so does a new GOTG comic book(s) and cash cow Disney. Marvel will go on a twice monthly schedule with the ‘All-New’ title. The All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy #1 is brought to you by writer Gerry Duggan and artist Aaron Kuder. The same Wednesday sees an all-star duo on Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy #1, writer Jim Starlin and artist Alan Davis. You have a movie to watch and two comics to buy.
Black Bolt gets his first solo series this week; Black Bolt #1, written by Saladin Ahmed and art by Christian Ward. We cannot help ourselves but to say, this series will come to a halt soon enough. Not because of anything bad really, but when the Inhumans television series comes out, a new number one will be presented. It’ll be (insert sarcasm here) Black Bolts’ second solo series!
Fanboys can begin their descend upon that mountain-top since climbing up there quite a few months ago. Secret Empire #1 comes out this Wednesday. Well the descend will be a bit slow because Marvel will probably push the proverbial envelope just a tad more before finally bringing Cap back to the Jedi side. The dark side has not only consumed our beloved Steve Rogers, but the fanbase have lost their minds dealing with Cap playing for Hydra this whole time, thus bring them to a dark place in their lives. Here’s the thing, and we were the first to say it when Steve uttered those words ‘ Hail Hydra’. Storytelling is subjective guys/gals. Anyone can devise a story and bring it forward, as long as it brings fannies back to the book to turn that page. Besides it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day because, we all know Cap is true Red, White and Blue and he will in fact be back eventually. Can we all relax a bit here? Let the story play out. Wait for the big hoopla 51 variant covers from Captain America’s new number one issue. It’s the 51 variants fans should be more annoyed about. Secret Empire #1; writer Nick Spencer, art Steve McNiven.
So many debuts from Marvel this week. Jean Grey #1; written by Dennis Hopeless and art by Victor Ibanez.
Spider-Gwen #19 will introduce a new character. Jason Latour (writer) and Robbi Rodriguez (artist) still doing their Spider-Gwen thing.

Batman #22 will have that special lenticular cover. Third of four comics to have this. Read our thoughts on these covers (and variants in general) in last weeks InvestComics Hot Picks #472.
Bane begins a twelve-issue maxi-series. (The 80’s old timers will know what a maxi-series is). Bane Conquest #1 written by Chuck Dixon and art by Graham Nolan.
Injustice 2 #1 takes place right before the Injustice 2 video game release. Written by Tom Taylor and art by Juan Albarran.

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks:
Rob Liefeld’s Youngblood is coming back. The original Youngblood #1 came out in 1992. That’s 25 years ago. Feel old yet? The new series is written by Chad Bowers and art by Jim Towe. Artist Jim Towe is a a newbie in this business. His first comic book work (minus the hardcover book) came in December of 2016; Cyberforce Artifacts #0. Oh yea, and David Finch doing his amazing homage cover thing too.

Empress #1 – This “Saga” like comic from Mark Millar will be sold out in no time. Watch for this Marvel imprint from Icon to take off. One of the key components to its success will be that it has to be consistent on its release. Millar’s Nemesis, also from Icon, was a semi-success, but lost many fans because of delays. It could have been a bigger book (should have been), but delays will kill things fast. Empress + on time = success.

Star Wars Poe Dameron #1 – Almost every week InvestComics preaches the gospel about Star Wars comics from Marvel. We say to buy them because they are fantastic reads and for the possible first appearance that may explode at any time. This week we have a character from the latest Star Wars movie making their first appearance in a Star Wars comic. What more do you want here? Okay, maybe have your wife/girlfriend or maybe read it with your kid? That would be cool too.

Justice League Darkseid War Special #1 – Darkseid’s daughter, Grail, will be making her indelible mark within the DC universe this Wednesday. DC might be priming her for bigger things to come. Check out the InvestComics Hot Picks #418 for more info on this and about Grail’s first appearance.

Harley Quinn And The Suicide Squad April Fools Special #1 – One of DC’s all time greatest artist will grace us with his presence in this book. Jim Lee will pencil and do the cover art here. What more do you need? Refer back to the new Star Wars comic if you need more answers on that.

Superman #51 – A new story line begins; Super League. Be on the lookout for possible new villains or heroes in this epic Superman crossover event. We’ll probably say “told you so!”

Showcase #75

Click To Buy Now

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates in purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details)

IC 100 Club Pick: Showcase #75 (1968) 7.0. This comic represents the first appearance and origin of Hawk and Dove. Story, cover and interior art from the legendary man himself, Steve Ditko. A 7.0 grade for only $90, with FREE shipping, gets this beauty in your hands. This a must in your collection.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from all available sellers on Ebay.

Look for writer Mark Millar to turn things upside down with the debut of Empress #1 from Marvel’s imprint Icon. It’s already getting billed as Marvel Comics version of “Saga”. And we all know how Saga turned out. Mark will introduce fans to a whole new sci-fi world. Hollywood LOVES Mark Millar and we wonder if Marvel Studios would ever pick this up and run with it. Who knows? It could happen. Either way, this is an introduction comic in the vein of Saga, one to watch for here! This will be big.

The new Black Panther series makes its debut this week; Black Panther Vol 6 #1. The longest running Black Panther series lasted 62 issues. Many limited series, one shots, and team-up books over the span of six volumes for the character. Will this series ever make past 62 issues? We’ll see. But the first issue here is accompanied by an abundance of variants to choose from. Pointless, and the need for 13 different covers (at last count, probably more) is a bit excessive. The creative team makes for a must get though. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and artist Brian Stelfreeze will bring fans back again and again.

Marvel will introduce a new Star Wars character into their library. Star Wars Poe Dameron #1 will have the first comic book appearance of Poe Dameron. Poe appeared in the latest Star Wars flick and now he makes his way into the funnies. Regular InvestComics readers know how we feel about the Star Wars comics. Buy them all! This one here is so obvious that if you miss it, shame on you! Besides Empress #1, this is the other big Marvel book this week.

Spider-Women Alpha #1 features Silk, Spider-Gwen and Spider-Woman all teaming up. The Stacey Lee variant is sold out.

This week’s Justice League Darkseid War Special #1 will focus on Darkseid’s daughter Grail. A book simmering in the back issue bins on Ebay is Justice League #40 (2015), the first appearance of Darkseid’s daughter Grail. With DC maybe headed towards a Darkseid movie appearance, who’s to say they won’t take a page out of Marvel’s film franchise and include his daughter, a’la Marvel’s Nebula (Thanos). Right now JL #40 might be a gimme at $15….the same price as some worthless variant this week. Maybe getting Justice League #40 instead of a pretty cover makes more sense. Just saying.
There are plenty of DC comic covers by John Romita Jr. to choose from this week. DC is proud to have John Romita Jr. on their side instead of those “other guys”. Some may say or think this is the first time John is playing for the other side, but fans of InvestComics know we’re going to do our research! John Romita Jr. first drew some DC characters back in 1994. Not just “any” characters, he penciled Batman, Robin, Joker, among some others from the DCU. The comic was Batman/Punisher: Deadly Knights. Art by John Romita Jr. and written by Chuck Dixon. John also contributed to the awesome cover. Great comic, great story, Romita Jr.’s first DC work.

While on topic regarding DC’s past history. Bloodlines #1 debuts with writer J.T. Krul and artist Kenneth Marion at the helm. Bloodlines was a huge crossover storyline that took almost 6 months to hammer out back in 1993, spanning from August to December. The very first Bloodlines book was Lobo Annual #1 Bloodlines Outbreak. This comic introduced the Bloodlines Parasites.

Mr. Jim Lee will provide artwork for this week’s winner of the longest comic book title; Harley Quinn And The Suicide Squad April Fools Special #1. Yes, THE Jim Lee will be penciling this comic. The Lee sketch cover is already sold out.

Injustice Gods Among Us Year Five #7 features the first appearance of the NEW Nightwing.
It looks like Superman #51 could possibly introduce some new characters within its major new storyline crossing over all of the Superman titles; Super League Part 1 begins here. Keep an eye out on this series for new characters and villains.
Green Arrow will battle Deathstroke in Green Arrow #51. Fantastic covers from Patrick Zircher (regular cover) and John Romita Jr. (variant).

Grizzly Shark #1 from Image Comics looks interesting. Grizzly Shark first appeared in Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark #1 (2010). This Origin debut comic is written by Robert Kirkman. Ever heard of him? Art from the 2010 and 2016 Shark books; Ryan Ottley.
A new Think Tank series will start this Wednesday; Think Tank #1 (Image Comics). The original series started in 2012; Think Tank #1.

Batgirl #43 deals with the mysterious Velvet Tiger. She was first introduced in Detective Comics #518 (1982). This comic also happens to be an early Deadshot appearance with a fantastic Jim Aparo cover.

The Batman Arkham Knight Genesis #1 comic is one of those video game comic books. All the covers look absolutely stunning. Stjepan Sejic, Jim Lee and the Incentive cover (no name listed). In which the incentive cover is the best of the bunch in our humble opinion. The introduction of the new villain; Arkham Knight! Awesome comic here.

Superman vs Deathstroke in Deathstroke #9. This looks like a fun fight! In all actuality it should last a shorter time than a Ronda Rousey fight, but we’ll read and watch anyway.

In the Flash #43 solicit we are told a deadly new villain comes into the fray. His name is Folded Man. Well since DC is still living in this New 52 world where a “new” character is not really new, Folded Man was actually introduced back in Flash #153 in 1965. This comic also happens to have an early Zoom appearance.

Hank Johnson Agent of Hydra #1 features a Jim Steranko homage cover. Nick Fury Agent of Shield #4 (1968) and speaking of Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D. #9 has all sorts of goodies in it. A must get and all of the variant covers are sold out already. A new Star Wars comic this week; Lando #3. Lando should be on your pull list. Any and all new Star Wars comics should be on your pull list.

More female superhero star power being introduced this Wednesday. This time from Dark Horse; the team; Zodiac Starforce in Zodiac Starforce #1. Also from Dark Horse, a critically acclaimed series gives fans a one shot; New MGMT #1Black Tiger #1 (Graphic India) is an introduction story of a new hero from creators Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan. Stringers #1 from Oni press looks like it could be a sleeper. And check out the cool Robbi Rodriguez variant. Readers should be all over Valiant Entertainment’s Book of Death: Fall of Ninjak #1. IDW’s Drive #1 variant is sold out.

Netflix recently announced that Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher will make his way onto the Daredevil series. Good news for comic fans! The fans have responded well and we decided it was time for a Punisher checklist.

As always, there will be comics that did not make the list. No big deal. If you have something to share or add to the list, please free to do so below.

NOTE: This website is best viewed on Google Chrome.

Marvel Tales #106 (1979) The very first comic reprint of Punisher’s first appearance with the original cover from Spidey #129. The first of many many Punisher origin reprints throughout the years.

Captain America #241 (1980) The first time Punisher appears in a comic other than a Spidey book in the Marvel Universe. An early Punisher appearance and classic too. The first comic cover the Punisher graces that is not Spider-Man related. Bob McLeod and Frank Miller cover.

Daredevil #181 (1982) The first appearance in the Daredevil title. This comic has it all. The death of Elektra, Bullseye appearance, Frank Miller writes, art, and cover. As explained in the Creator Spotlight: Frank Miller; Netflix already announced the Punisher will be making his way into the Daredevil series. This book here is all kinds of awesome already and any collector should already own one. Because of the characters and probable story line on the Netflix show, it would be wise to get one if you don’t have one yet……BUT that said, on the flip side, there are way way too many copies of this comic available. Being too accessible puts it in the “New Mutants #98” category. So many copies, way overpriced. Be smart.

As all of the Creator Spotlights on InvestComics, each and every one of the creators have their own uniqueness. Rob Liefeld stormed into the industry back in 1987 and took the industry by the proverbial ears, starred into its eyes and said “I’m taking over.” So he he did.

He was one of the busiest creators in the industry at one time. The man was churning out comics at a ridiculous rate. That was good for the fans because they couldn’t seem to get enough.

Check out some of Rob Liefeld’s key books in his vast career thus far. Everything from Deadpool to Jada Pinkett Smith. Yes Jada….

Marc Spector, Moon Knight #19 (1990) A solo Rob Liefeld Moon Knight cover with Spider-Man and the Punisher.

New Mutants #98 (1991) Well here it is. The Holy Grail. Only fours years into his professional career, Rob hits on a character that will forever change his career and the Marvel character landscape. The cover alone has been paid respect to so many times throughout the years. Rob Liefeld introduced the world to Deadpool and Marvel had a character for the ages. Not much can be said about this comic and character that hasn’t been said already, but Rob is officially a superstar now.

X-Force #1 (1991) This comic was ridiculously hot back in the early 90’s. Too many copies released prevented it from gaining any substantial aftermarket heat. Rob pencils/inks and cover art. New Release Comics on 5/20/15 (And back issues)

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Marvel’s newest title will be hitting this Wednesday; A-Force #1. A much hyped all female Avengers team. With all of the female strong characters of late, this only seems fitting right? Here’s the thing, and this happens way too often. Whenever the big two (Marvel or DC) hit on something (characters/team) that works for them (monetarily), they go ahead and shove it down our throats. Deadpool, Lobo, Wolverine, Spider-Gwen, Ghost Rider, etc. It happens all the time. Appearances aplenty and number one issues as well. The  A-Force team will be shoved in our faces as “must like” material. Here’s newsflash, this A-Force love-fest is not going to last very long. Not being a negative Nancy, just a realist and a speculator. We hope to get proven wrong, but history is doomed to repeat itself here. Quickly, name one mega successful all female comic book team book. You can’t. You can probably rattle off a dozen female characters that are simply red hot right now though and have held their own for years and years. That’s where this all works. Just like some of their counterparts, they are fantastic solo acts or team players. An all female team is not what the fandom really wants. Yes some female comic character are out selling their counterparts easily and we get that the push to lure the girl into the hobby is possibly working, but it’s not going to work with A-Force. Again, prove us wrong, would love that. We want to see success here.
With all this said, the great part about A-Force #1 is we’re probably going to get an endearing story. An all female Avengers heroes team kicking butt should be a fun read. We also know we’re getting a ridiculous amount of variants too. The Adam Hughes variant is sold out.
So get this book because you like to read comics. You probably will not be able to speculate this book and make some serious cash on it. Maybe, possibly an immediate impact, but longer term? Simply don’t see it. Last time here, prove us wrong and sustain some readership/market value. Please. That Adam Hughes variant is nice though isn’t it?! Enjoy the great read.

More Secret Wars awesomeness with the release of Secret Wars Battleworld #2. Witness all of the knock em down drag them out fights in this comic. M.O.D.O.K. Evilness reaches new heights here. M.O.D.O.K.’s First appearance is in Tales of Suspense #94 (1967). Such a goofy looking character, and it’s brought to you by Stan Lee, Jack ‘King’ Kirby and Joe Sinnott. Wow now that’s some firepower. For many years fans have clamored the presence of M.O.D.O.K. On the big screen and it just doesn’t seem feasible without looking completely goofy. Maybe, somehow Marvel figures it out, but seeing a huge head like that flying around would be a “jump the shark” type deal and not a productive one. More like a Dark Crystal or a muppet type feel, thus not taken seriously. Marvel Studios is probably aware of the possible vibe and this is why we’ll probably never see this character on screen.

The Marvel Ultimate universe is ending. What a ride is has been! Witness this tragic event in Ultimate End #1. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and art by Mark Bagley. This is the same exact creative team that ushered in the Marvel Ultimate Universe 15 years ago with the first Ultimate comic ever; Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (2000). Ultimate End #1 will be a story for the ages. No more Ultimate Universe. And we don’t really see it coming back from Marvel either. This won’t be a “take-back” from Marvel. We don’t see Marvel going back to the well anytime soon re-releasing Ultimate books or the universe. Marvel is merging the two universe’s in the Secret Wars/Battleworld story, so essentially they really don’t have a need to revisit the Ultimate universe later on down the line. Of course it can still happen because if Marvel wants it they’ll do it, but bringing back the Ultimate universe (ever) after the dust settles on this storyline would be a tremendous disappointment.

Planet Hulk #1 will be full of awesome this Wednesday. Regular readers here at InvestComics know that Planet Hulk and World War Hulk have been promoted here as enormous buys because of the movie speculation we were first on. No one else was informing speculators to buy The Incredible Hulk #92 (2006) back a few years ago, the first Planet Hulk. Also What If Planet Hulk #1 (2007). We still recommend these comic. Buy them. A surprise creative team backup story accompanies Planet Hulk #1, we look forward to the surprise!

Yeah, so now Spider-Verse is back; Spider-Verse #1 and this just means that there will be another chance for one of those first appearances or re-introductions to do well in the aftermarket. Stay close here with your ear to the ground. That all said, the Robert Rodriguez Spider-Gwen variant is sold out already. InvestComics informs speculators and readers almost every week, they need to get on top of any new Star Wars comics if they want to be in the know and the possible aftermarket frenzy. At any time a new hero or villain can show up. This will cause a huge aftermarket boost. Get in and get out. If you want, hold onto at least one of your $4.99 comics if you want to possibly wait and see if the market will explode after the movie in December. Buy new Star Wars comics. All of them……and the new Star Wars #5 this week.

Master of Kung Fu #1.….maybe Marvel really wants this work because of the Iron Fist Netflix on the horizon. Create that whole Karate/Kung Fu vibe. Bring back the Kung Fu lure, make it happening again. Get the first Master of Kung Fu in Special Marvel Edition #15 (1973) just in case we have a resurgence. Pencils and cover by Jim Starlin too. Nice.

A bunch of number one comics to definitely check out this week;

Insufferable #1 from IDW, written by Mark Waid, art by Peter Krause. A new team book and it looks awesome. Boom Studios; Oh Killstrike #1. Interesting premise here. An escaped comic book character needs to be put back into a comic book. And the Kris Anka variant cover is sold out. Aspen Comics makes an appearance this week here with Psycho Bonkers #1.What a great title! Love it. And what a great looking read too. A five issue mini-series. Adventures of Aero Girl #1 from Action Lab Entertainment also looks like an interesting/fun read. The first Accelerators series did well for Blue Juice comics, so now we have a follow up with Accelerators Momentum #1. Valhalla Mad #1 from Image Comics. Written by Joe Casey. A sellout for sure. A whacked out take on mythology. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #1, written by Mr. IDW himself Chris Ryall. Dark Horse; Resident Alien Sam Hain Mystery #1. A good looking story here. Chuck Dixon’s Winterworld Frozen Fleet #1 from IDW will be a good book to sit back and read.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Deadpools Secret Secret Wars #1. A wacky tale here written by Cullen Bunn. Great Tony Harris regular cover too. And also a solid homage grave variant as well. Sold out comics here most likely.

And check out Daredevil #15.1, “The life and times of Daredevil. 50 years in the making!” Ryan Stegman variant kills!

If you are a regular InvestComics monthly newsletter subscriber you found out before everyone else about the very cool things in store for you the fan. Pictured above are the cool giveaways (and one special auction) that will be happening for the next few months. Included in the awesome bunch is the InvestComics One & Done Anthology signed right on the cover by some of the industry’s best. This Anthology which rose over $250 so far for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund will be auctioned off on Ebay with the proceeds going to the CBLDF. Hang tight for that auction (Lots of giveaway contest beforehand). The auction announcement will be splashed all over the InvestComics landscape, so you won’t miss it when it does happen. So who did exactly sign that cover you ask? How about Dan Parent, Chuck Dixon, Billy Tucci, Neal Adams, Alex Saviuk, Nelson Ortega, Terry Cronin, Ethan Van Sciver, Georges Jeanty, Adam Hughes, Rob Hunter, Jim Cheung, Gail Simone, Bob Layton, Whilce Portacio, Rick Osman, Frank Tieri, Bob McLeod, Jimmy Palimotti, Chris Claremont, Mark Bagley, Frank Cho, Amanda Conner, George Perez, and Paul Pelletier. And to top off the list, I (Jay Katz) will sign the inside. That’s quite the list there isn’t it?? As for the other comics shown; New Excalibur #1 signed by the Legend himself Chris Claremont, Villains United #1 signed by Gail Simone (Interview on InvestComics Youtube coming!), Tales of the Teen Titans #44 signed by the Legend George Perez, Nightwing Target #1 signed by Chuck Dixon, Freelancers #3 signed by Eric Esquivel (Interview on InvestComics Youtube now! Yes lots to take in, but be sure to enter these contests to win.

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=238]

Okay Hot Picks time. There are certainties in life. The character Thanos is one such case. So is the fact that last Sunday InvestComics informed you guys/gals that East of West #1 is a not to miss book. Yes, listen to the Broker when he tells you about the certainties in the collectors market. It’ll do your wallet some good. So getting back to Thanos now, if you ever doubted anything in the speculation market, this one would not be the one to doubt. If you don’t own or are thinking about owning Iron Man #55, stop thinking and do it. I cannot stress enough how much Thanos is going to make an impact on the movie side of things. The best comparison to make here is actually quite simple. Thanos will be the modern day Darth Vader. I have said this before and I will keep saying it. Thanos’ impact in the theaters will directly impact the back issue market. This said, this week Thanos Rising (2013) #1 will be altering the Marvel Universe as we know it. Yes that villain Thanos is going to bring it and you better be ready. This dude is a bad ass.

…..More certainties this week; Harbinger Wars (2013) #1. This comic will be a quick sell out, so you better grab one off the shelf before they disappear.

Superior Spider-Man (2012) #7 will see the return of Cardiac. The first appearance of Cardiac came in Amazing Spider-Man #342. Want to feel old? This comic was penciled by Erik Larsen 23 years ago!! 1990….23 years ago!! Wow.

DC Comics celebrates with a special issue of Detective Comics (2011 2nd Series) #19. “Mystery of the 900!” Umm, okay.

….More certainties this week; Regular Show #1. This book will be harder to find than any other in the aftermarket for cover price after Wednesday. Yep.

So with Venom (2011 Marvel) #33 we get the ol’ homage cover thingy going. Isn’t that nice? One little thing here though. Spawn #222 a few issues ago did the same exact thing. Two comics in such close proximity of each other paying homage to Todd McFarlane’s (paid himself homage; he’s proud of himself) Amazing Spider-Man #316. Click on the collage below to see a bigger image of all 3 covers side by side. Which one do you like best?

Venom

Okay so wrapping up. How about a bunch of number one and number zero issues to look out for? Miss Fury (2013 Dynamite) #1 (Look at that cover – holy assets Batman!), Robyn Hood vs Red Riding Hood (2013 Zenescope) #1, Steam Wars (2013 Antarctic Press) #0 (interesting concept here, Star Wars theme = sold out), Tales of Fear (2013 Aazurn) #1, Unleashed (2013 Zenescope) #0, Snow Angel (2013 Dark Horse) #0, Last of Us American Dreams (2013 Dark Horse) #1, andPolarity (2013 Boom) #1.

Not only can he draw, but he’s a super cool dude too! 2; Brianna Floss. This girl did a couple of interviews for InvestComics and was great! She too is a super nice gal and will hopefully stay close to InvestComics for some more interviews because she’s an undiscovered talent! We don’t want to share! Thanks Bri!! 10 Questions with Chuck Dixon

1CDPICLegend comic book writer Chuck Dixon!

(From http://www.dixonverse.net)

I’m originally from the Philadelphia area and had an unremarkable childhood full of movies and TV and pick-up softball and backyard shoot-em-ups.

And comic books.

Throw a rock in this business and you’ll hit a guy who was sick a lot as child and his mom, dad, aunt, neighbor, cousin, uncle or a total stranger gave him a stack of comics to read and the future was carved in stone. So my background’s no different. A sick kid and a full of comic books.

I amassed a huge collection by haunting garage sales and paper pulpers and buying out neighborhood kids’ collections for pennies-a-comic. See, they outgrew them but I knew I never would. And I filled reams of looseleaf paper with stories. By thirteen I realized I would never be a comic artist like my idol, Steve Ditko. So I began to turn more toward writing comics.

I’ve held every kind of job you can poke a want ad at. I’ve driven an ice cream truck, presided over graveyard shifts at 7-11s where I met a lot of potential Batman villains. I’ve guarded insurance companies without the aid of a utility belt. I’ve been a janitor, stockboy, limo driver and mobile disc jockey. I wrote a couple of children’s books. I’ve storyboarded a few TV commercials. I sold silk-screened t-shirts by mail.

And in all that time I kept at my first love; writing comic stories.

My first BIG break came when Larry Hama hired me to write for SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN. From there I went on to work with Tim Truman on AIRBOY and from there to ALIEN LEGION with Carl Potts and Archie Goodwin. I worked on every Punisher story Don Daley could throw at me.

The second break came when Denny O’Neil invited me to write a ROBIN mini series. The success of that project (due to the readers’ wish to see a new Robin.) led to a regular stint on DETECTIVE COMICS of eighty issues (most of them with Graham Nolan, master penciller) and the assignment of a regular Robin series and several other Bat related books as well as a long run on GREEN ARROW. Scott Peterson tapped me for NIGHTWING’s first monthly. I also wrote BIRDS OF PREY, a series featuring Oracle (Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl) and Black Canary.

After a long run with DC Comics and other publishers, I have recently moved with my wife and kids (and the world’s most dangerous minature Schnauzer) to accept an exclusive position to write multi-genre stories for CrossGen Comics down in the alligator state of Florida.
