Creator Spotlight – Michael Turner

Michael Turner Wonder Woman

The comic industry lost one of the industries best talents eight years ago. Michael Turner would have turned 45 years old on April 21st. He was a fan favorite that delivered on every single cover he put out. His pencils were unmistakable. His covers were remarkable. Michael died on June 27th 2008 at the young age of 37. Gone way too soon, but he left fans with the memory of his work. A vast body of work that spans from 1994 to 2008. Recently though, Turner’s art has been showing up once again through exclusive variant covers. They’ve garnered a lot of attention and have sold out….quickly. Michael Turner is doing it again, making fans love him all over again.

Here are a few of our favorite books. We couldn’t list them all, so maybe your favorite was left off. No hard feelings. His body of work is simply too expansive. Too many to choose from. Enjoy our list below.

Thanks Michael, your work will always live on.

**Please note. There are many variations to Michael Turner comics. Many covers, many titles holding the the same name with different years, publishers, etc. When clicking the RED links or comic cover, some results will bring random comics not pertaining to the particular comic you clicked. Scroll down through the search result on Ebay to find the exact book you’re looking for.

Ted McKeever, a main staple within the comic industry has been around since 1987. A tremendous talent with many books under his belt as well as industry stories apparently. This Wednesday fans get treated to a self created/character title called Pencil Head #1 from Image Comics. The comic is a semi-biography based on the comic book industry from Ted’s view. Some awesome stories to read in here we’re sure! InvestComics has been around for 10+ years and boy do we have some stories to tell too. Maybe someday……someday.
Symmetry #1 (Image Comics) received a nice welcome, now the hard part. Keeping the fanbase around after Symmetry #2. Check out the second issue this week. We have faith you’ll be looking for issue #3.

Who knows if Marvel will ever really get to that Captain Marvel movie in 2018. With a flop or two, the comic book movie landscape will change dramatically. You do know this will eventually happen right? It’s inevitable, there will be failure to some degree someday. If Disney hits a bad spot and then another bad spot, the game will change in a big way. Even after the first bump in the road, Disney will pump the breaks big time. Do not be naive to the fact that comic book movies will be around forever. Don’t get us wrong here either, comic book movies will be around for a while, for years to come, but to what capacity is the question.
IF Marvel (Disney) ever makes it far enough to get Carol Danvers going, it’ll be the first major female comic character to ever have a huge budget behind them to succeed. Don’t bring up Catwoman or Supergirl or Elektra, you know what we are saying. What Marvel is doing as far as their continuing and connecting movies is cinematic history. Never been done before. A Captain Marvel movie will be made to succeed (obviously). Succeed big while grabbing the young girls and teenage girls as new Marvel’ette’s. Disney knows what they are doing, they really really hope to get to 2018 with no bumps in the road. There is an untapped comic book audience that they will market. They’ll kill. Like they always do.
Now that we have your attention, let’s get back to Carol Danvers comic books. Carol Danvers first appearance was in Ms. Marvel #1 (1977) as Ms. Marvel. Her first appearance as Captain Marvel was in Captain Marvel #1 (2012). Then you have the first Carol Danvers in Avenging Spider-Man #9 (2012) as Carol Danvers, but she’s on the cover as Captain Marvel? It’s a bit confusing the way some of these grading companies do things, but we just follow along like everyone else. Anyway, these comics should find a home in your collection sooner rather than later. If we get to 2018 with no issues and Disney is full steam ahead, these comics will be sitting in a different place monetarily. Major upside potential here. Major.
Oh yes almost forgot, there’s Captain Marvel #1 coming out this Wednesday. Check that out too.

We really wish the Deadpool movie would come out already. Every week fans have to endure another onslaught of Deadpool variants or the character appearing on random covers. We get it Marvel, we really do. Stop already. So with that said, Deadpool #6 will introduce fans to Deadpool 2099. And a big surprise here, ready for it…? Ready?…..the new character is a female. You’re surprised right?! Right?! No you’re not. Neither are we!
And as long as we’re on topic with the female character, how about checking out the New Avengers #5 this week? The introduction of a “new” Avengers team will make their first appearance. By “new”, we mean new characters; Iron Mariner, King Hulk, Marvel Woman, Collapsar, and Captain America. By the looks of it, Captain America, Iron Mariner, and Marvel Woman (obviously) are all female. Interesting no? We dig it. They look awesome.

There’s a very annoying unnecessary number one issue coming out on Wednesday. Silver Surfer #1. Written by Dan Slott and art by Mike Allred. What’s so irritating about this one may ask. The same writer and artist that started Silver Surfer #1 from 2014 went 15 issues and ended their run last month(?) and will be starting anew with a number one issue. Why not just continue with issue #16 THIS month? It makes no sense really. None. The only obvious reason would be to sell more comics by slapping the number ONE on the cover. It’s ridiculous really. We’re quite sure Dan and Mike will provide tremendous entertainment, but this starting from a new number one stuff is flat out silly. Yep, we said it.

Mr. Bloom seems to be causing all kinds of problems for Batman in Batman #48. Not too sure if this story is in fact leading to the final Synder/Capullo Batman book (number 50). Probably so, but an end of an era is coming for the best creative team on Batman in years.

Dynamite Entertainment makes the Hot Picks article this week with Devolution #1. Rick Remender writes and a Jae Lee cover. That’s enough in itself to check this out.
Pathfinder Hollow Mountain #3 paying homage to the iconic cover from 1958’s Adventure Comics #247 by Stan Kaye, Ira Schapp, and Curt Swan. This comic is the first appearance of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
451 Media Group continues to sell out every week. Sunflower #1 and #2 sold out, look for Sunflower #3 (with lots of sunflowers on the cover) to possibly continue the trend.

Superstar artist Jim Lee is back on a Batman book. Batman Europa #1 will be a four part mini-series featuring top talent in the industry. Written by Matteo Casali and Brian Azzarello. This four part series will be a great read as well as getting your eye candy. What more can a comic fan ask for here? Batman vs Joker by premiere creators, Azzarello, Lee, and more? Yes this is a no-brainer.

Let’s not forget what Jim Lee brought to the table back in 2002/2003 with his iconic Batman run starting with Batman #608 and also creating one of the most iconic Batman/Superman comic covers of all time; Batman #612. He did previous Batman books before those though. And if you’re a Jim Lee fan, you must check out the extensive InvestComics Jim Lee Creator Spotlight checklist right HERE. You’ll find some great Jim Lee books there.

Bizarro #6 will introduce a new villain; Queen Tut. Martian Manhunter #6 features a new female martian character.

A new DC/Vertigo title to check out; Red Thorn #1.

The speculator will have to be on alert this Wednesday for the new Image comic Huck #1. With Mark Millar writing, it is not inconceivable to think that a movie studio will come knocking and before you know it, Huck is announced as a possible movie project. This happens quite often in the Millar camp. The artwork will be done by superstar Rafael Albuquerque. A very simple story here about a man (Huck) with superpowers (assuming) does something nice everyday, but his neighbors keep his good deeds hush-hush, until one day…..! The Image solicit is pushing this comic as something fans have never seen before and will love it. (*knock knock knock) Get the door, we think Universal Studios is knocking.

Although Marvel’s Black Knight character has had several first appearance as different alias, Dane Whitman would be the one with the most credits. First appearing in Avengers #47 (1967), Black Knight will appear this Wednesday in his own series Black Knight #1 starring as……you guessed it, Dane Whitman. The new series will be written by Frank Tieri. Here’s something to ponder. Marvel (Disney) has yet to even tease anything regarding the “knights” genre. Not even remotely, nothing, zilch, nada. If EVER, Dane Whitman will be tapped as the lead character. He’s been a main staple with the Marvel Universe a long time and he’s been in a ton of Avengers books. Yes indeed, a ponder and a speculative nugget. You’re welcome.

Only three issues in and some silliness has crept into Captain America Sam Wilson #3. This issue features the return of Capwolf. Yes that’s correct, Capwolf. Maybe writer Nick Spencer makes this work, who knows? If you feel captivated by the notion of the Capwolf character, you can get his first appearance in Captain America #405 (1992).

Is there any reason to be excited about The Mighty Thor #1? We all know Jane Foster is Thor. Now we simply don’t care anymore, the climax is over. We’ve been dealt the cards, we saw what we have and we folded. We’re done here. Do we need to carry on the nonsense of having Thor as a female character now? We say, not for long. The whole idea that Jane is battling cancer and losing is a very sad thing. She’s a beloved character, but this may give Marvel the “out” in order to bring back the Thor we all know and love. If sales don’t meet expectations, which we don’t think they will, then Jane will eventually die and Thor will come back. Ms. Marvel #1 on the other hand has more upside if there were to be a side by side longevity comparison. Stronger character traits (not history) and overall more appeal.

At first glance, New Avengers #3 looks as though Superman is on the cover! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s a Marvel comic!

Sticking with the perplexed department here, what in God’s green earth is Secret Wars Too #1 about?

Marvel will give Spider-Woman another go; Spider-Woman #1. The longest lasting series for Spider-Woman ever was 50 issues. Her second longest? 18 issues. So lets all hope (no pun intended) writer Dennis Hopeless gets the ship right a bit this time. Starting off things with a pregnant Jessica Drew on just about all the covers. That in itself feels a bit odd no? Here’s hoping she has an easier labor than the series will.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 12/17/14

As stated in previous weeks, there are big changes coming to the InvestComics platform. Changes that will benefit the collector in all ways possible. It’s been a 9 year run (going on 10 years) that InvestComics has giving the speculator/reader a platform like no other web site on the internet. There are a lot of sites that have popped up over the past few years/months/weeks that have tried to duplicate the InvestComics lure, but fall short because we have the library of information provided for so many years. If you don’t take yourself so seriously, enjoy the modern/bronze age speculative/reading aspect of collecting, then you will enjoy what is to come. Stay tuned.

Coming up on the holiday season here. A very busy life calls for a less busy InvestComics Hot Picks! This doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of comics to read and speculate on for your own liking. Check out what made our list though…..

All New Captain America #2 will continue to focus on the character Nomad. It’s just a matter of time before we see this dude in a movie right? Probably not, maybe, who knows?! Anyhow, here is a small checklist (you know InvestComics has LOTS of checklist too!) on the character Nomad.

Nomad_First_Appearances_InvestComics

Nomad’s first appearance was in Captain America #180 (1974) as Steve Rogers. Captain America #261 (1981); Edward Ferbel, Captain America #1 (2013); Ian Rogers. And Jack Monroe; Captain America #282 (1983). So the question to ask yourself now is, should I buy these? Well, all of these first appearances are very affordable. You won’t lose any money and Captain_Marvel_10_InvestComics Ms_Marvel_1_InvestComicsyou’ll get great stories to boot. The answer to your question is simple. Yes.

Another Captain to look out for this week is Captain Marvel. Ever since the Captain Marvel movie announcement, Captain Marvel has been extremely hot in the aftermaket. Captain Marvel #10 will have a very cool cover that pays homage to the original appearance of Carol Danvers from Ms. Marvel #1 (1977). Marvel is celebrating the 100th solo issue with the tribute cover. The best part of this “very cool cover” is that it’s not a variant. Regular cover here!

And speaking of variants and homage covers, how about Spider-Woman #2? The obvious money grab from Marvel is stated right on the cover! Stay classy Marvel. Anyway, this “nothing to do with Spider-Woman” cover borrows from the famous Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974) (Punisher’s first appearance of course). This variant will be cover price on Wednesday. Will it stay that way for long? Maybe not given the fact Rocket Raccoon is so popular these days and Amazing_Spider-Man_129_InvestComics Spider_woman_Rocket_raccoon_investcomicsit’s a great tribute cover.

Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #8 promises a mind blowing event. Readers will find out what is behind the Miles Morales legacy and who Miles’ daddy is.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #37 will reveal the secret history of Roy Harper and Oliver Queen, so fans of those two will want to check this out.

The speculative market does not remain all that quiet with new releases from Image Comics. The red hot Wytches will continue its torrid pace with Wytches #3 and Rumble #1 looks to be a nice pick-up. Ray Fawkes’ Intersect #2 will see some awesome sales. All of these Image titles will be sold out very soon. Titan Comics will have three number comics coming out on new comic book day. Check out 13 Coins #3, Mono #1 and Captain Stone #1. All of Titan’s new number ones are sold out or just about there. If you want em’, grab em’.

Titan_Comics_investcomicsSee you soon. Invest wisely.

Carpe Diem.

Top 200 Hottest Comic Titles and recent Back Issues during EARLY APRIL 2014

Top 200 Hottest Comic Titles and recent Back Issues during EARLY APRIL 2014

Bi-weekly column and list compiled by comics historian Terry Hoknes of www.HoknesComics.com – hoknes@hotmail.com

This chart is styled like the old classic Wizard Magazine Top 10 Hottest Comic charts that were published every month in the 1990′s.

HotComics201404Early

This list is updated every 2 weeks.  This list is compiled from my non-stop research of the current market.   I believe these were the most demand and growing in value books this month.     This list focuses on all regular edition covers.  (Variants are not listed otherwise they would likely dominate the entire list due to instant high prices and calculated small print runs).   If you think I have missed any hot MODERN titles/issues please let me know.  Here are my picks of what I believe are the hottest comics at this very moment from all sold out releases of MODERN comics online based on back issue sales ABOVE cover price.

Note these are all the “hot” recent sold comics that your comic shops will not have still on the shelf for cover price.  However many speculators will hunt their local comic shops looking for that “hot” book that is still on the shelf – sometimes you find them!

This market report is based on very current constant online sales.  Number of sales online above cover and the amount above cover price are the criteria I use for ranking books highest on the list.

MARKET REPORT:

#1 INVINCIBLE #110 (IMAGE 2014) Media report of Robert Kirkman talking about the rape in the story caused a sellout and instant overnight hit on April 11th 2014 with online sales hitting up to $40.00 immediately before cooling down.  Interest in issue #44 started shortly after for the first app of the villain who does the raping.

#2 EPIC ILLUSTRATED #3 (MARVEL 1980) 1st app of Dreadstar in this common magazine became super hot in early April 2014 with numerous sales of $100.00 each and one copy hit $200.00 raw.

#3 MS MARVEL (MARVEL 2014) #1 1st printing of #1-2 both sold out and interest high in new Muslim superhero and prices hit high of $27.00 for #1 regular cover and tons of sales around $10.00 recently.

#4 DEAD LETTERS (BOOM 2014) #1 1st printing sold out immediately and hit a high of $18.00 a copy week of release before cooling a bit.

#5 MANIFEST DESTINY (IMAGE 2013)  Hottest Image title of the past year with #1 selling up to $50.00. #2-3 both approaching $20 each.  Reprint sets even selling very strong.  4 printings of #1 all above cover price.

#6 RUNAWAYS (MARVEL 2003) Brian K Vaughan (Saga) decade old Marvel series has been hot all year long with a high of $80.00 for #1.

#7 GREEN LANTERN (DC 2014) #28 Red Lanterns – Daughter storyline with Supergirl sold out and gone to 2nd printing.  Many sales up to $10.00 each.

#8 PREACHER (DC 1995)  Once the hottest back issue almost 20 years ago and word of a new tv/movie in the works saw back issues reach for highest prices ever for #1.  A raw copy hit $385.00 on Nov 24th 2013.  #13 with 1st Herr Starr super hot selling up to $65.00 a copy in speculation of appearing in the new TV series.

#9 BUNKER (ONI 2014)  #1-2.  Reports of a TV show in the works before #1 was even released made this a hot sellout instantly with sales for the regular cover and the 1:10 hitting record sales within days of release.    Highest sales so far are $15.00 for regular cover and $19.00 for variant cover.    Many retailers were able to sell their copies instantly marked up.  #2 was another instant sellout and quickly hit up to $10.00 per copy.

#10 DREDD UNDERBELLY (TITAN 2014) One-shot based on new movie was underprinted and overlooked by most retailers and prices hit $16.00 the week of release in January 2014 but continued to be hot after a month reaching a high of $50.00.  2nd print came out a month later and sales all over the board from low to high but many high sales up to $30.00 each.

#11 CAPTAIN AMERICA #6 and #14 (MARVEL 2006) #6 1st full app of Winter Soldier to star in the new Captain America movie has interest high hitting a peak of $30.00 plus there is a variant cover as well.  #14 features a classic cover and the origin of Winter Soldier and hit a high of $50.00.  The real 1st app is in the common issue #1.

#12 HARLEY QUINN (DC 2013) #0 1 2 – all sold out and have 2nd printings.  Sets selling especially well up to $30 for #0-4 1st prints.  #1 many sales at $8.00

#13 SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #30 (MARVEL 2014) the Return of Peter Parker took readers by surprise and issue sold out instantly and some sales up to $10.00 each for 1st prints the month before Amazing Spider-man #1 reboots.

#15 THE STRAIN (Dark Horse) 12 issue mini-series becomes due to potential TV series.  This book has been hot off an on for a year now and latest prices have pushed it up to $60.00 for #1 based on new TV show talk.

289 Strain 8 $3.50 Dark Horse 4977 2012 9

#17 DC STEAMPUNK 1:25 VARIANT EDITIONS (DC FEB 2014) Many of DC’s main core titles had a 1:25 variant ratio with a steampunk theme and #28 issues of Batman, Wonder Woman, Justice League Dark, Batgirl, Detective, Nightwing and Harley Quinn #3 all were selling at record prices due to extra high demand as high as $50.00 each.  Wonder Woman #28 was the hottest hitting a high of $85.00

#18 BATMAN #1-9 – Most issues from #3-9 sell averaging $20-$30 each and #1 sells for up to $60.00.  Complete sets of #1-10 bring $150.00.  Batman is the #1 selling regular monthly comic book these days and it is the most valuable “complete set” of all current titles.

#19 SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL (DC 1992) #17 first cameo appearance of Doomsday who eventually killed Superman a month later.   This issue had much smaller print run than the hyped up Superman issues once Superman died.  Two printings exist and many charging more for the 2nd printing.  In past month sales jumped as high as $50.00 and $100.00 for the 2nd printing raw.

#20 SUICIDE SQUAD (DC 2011) New ongoing series features Harley Quinn including some new origin issues.  All early issues sold out and sets selling quite high.  #1,6,7 are major key issues selling up to $30.00 each.

#21 TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES – GLOBAL CONQUEST MINI-SERIES #1-5 – These printings seem to have disappeared and the few sales that appear if marketed correctly bring $20.00 an issue.

#22 SCATTERBRAIN #1-4 (2006)  This small indie mini-series from 8 years ago features the first appearance of The Devil’s Hopyard and a complete set sold for $30.00 soon after the release of Devils Hopyard.
#23 SHELTERED #1 (IMAGE 2013) Series reported in Jan 2014 to be a new TV series saw new interest with #1′s selling constantly at $10.00

#24 SEX CRIMINALS (IMAGE 2013) #1 has 6 printings all sold out and all early issues sold out and commanding higher prices.  4th printing of #1 had a very small print run and a fun photo cover which had high demand and prices hit $20.00 immediately.

#25 DEVIL’S HOPYARD #1 (ARRDEN 2014) New small print #1 sold out instantly sales up to $15.00 within 3 days of release.

#26 BLACK SCIENCE (IMAGE 2013) #1 sold out and some early sales up to $9.00 per each of the 2 regular covers.  #2 sold out instantly from Diamond and stores appeared to be shorted everywhere and copies hit up to $25.00 each immediately for the 2 covers.

#27 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (MARVEL 2013) New ongoing series – new movie in the works for next year.  Early issues #0.1, 1, 2 had very high print runs and then retailers pulled back.  Issues #3 and #4 instantly sold out and both have 2nd printings.    Sets now all sell above cover.

#28 WWE ONGOING (2014) New ongoing series based on World Wrestling federation sports characters.  #1 had 4 regular covers which now sell for up to $50.00 for a set of 5 including the Undertaker variant.  Undertaker was very popular bringing at least $15.00 on its own.

#29 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (Marvel 2008) Entire run is super hot due to interest in upcoming movie.  #1 hit new high close to $100 in spring of 2014 however all non-key issues bring anywhere from $5 to $15 each.

NUMBERCRUNCHER #1 (TITAN 2013) New miniseries from small publisher sold out instantly – nobody has copies for sale.

Did not even chart on the monthly Top 300.   High sale of $13.00.   #3 sold out even before day of release.

EXTINCTION PARADE (Avatar) 4 different covers – high quality format similar to Uber.  Online pre-sales were doing well above cover.  Print run of each cover was less than 5,000 each.    In November talk of a TV show heated up the series a little bit.

FARLAINE THE GOBLIN #1 (STUDIO FARLAINE 2013)  New small print publisher – possibly smallest distributed comic of the year with print run of only 1350.   Two versions of #1 exist as an early promo copy was sent out only to retailers with a print run of only 250 copies.  Both versions sold out before release date at Diamond.   Copies hit a high of $40.00 within first week of release.  We helped bring awareness to this amazing book before release date.   Prices cooled down after a few weeks.

NOWHERE MEN (Image) #1-3 prices had peaked at $40,25,15 in March.    Set of #1-5 now sells for $60.00   #1 $30 / #2 $20 / #3 $10 / #4 $3 / #5 $3.   Note the print run increases for #4 and then #5.   #1 already has a 5th printing – with so many reprints of all issues on the market its hard to sell the reprints at any price currently.172 Nowhere Men 1 $2.99 Image 11815 2012 11 213 Nowhere Men 2 $2.99 Image 7368 2012 12209, Nowhere Men3, $2.99, Image, 7,421

AMAZING SPIDERMAN #700 DITKO VARIANT (MARVEL 2012) Normally I do not include variants if they just have a predictable higher market value due to small print run but I am including this issue as its truly was hotter than normal.  It came out in December 2012 featuring the death of Peter Parker.  But this rare variant was a 1:200 ratio which usually are worth about $100.00 but by January this comic hit a high peak of $1200.00 making it a record high sales price for any new comic in 2013.

DOCTOR WHO PRISONER OF TIME #1-12  Photo variants. Normally I do not include variants if they just have a predictable higher market value due to small print run but I am including this issue as its truly a hot issue climbing in value and selling way more than expected for the print run.  Currently the 1:25 photo cover sells each month on average at about $60.00 instead of an estimated $15.00 for a 1:25 variant.

THE OTHER DEAD (IDW 2013) #1 of the regular and subscription covers sold as sets as high as $18.00 for the pair.  The series was delayed in stores potentially due to the controversial 1:10 variant cover featuring President Obama with machine guns which sold way above a typical variant price hitting $40.00

THE MOCKING DEAD #1 (2013) New release comic that sold out instantly and went to 2nd print.  Early sales online were all over the place with sales anywhere from $4 to $40 for the subscription cover.  Currently a bit above cover for the regular cover and the subscription about $8.00
HALLOWEEN FEST 2013 – Just like Free Comic Book Day, there is an annual Halloween free comic book day on Halloween each year and this year there were 22 giveaway promo comics.   Individually most sold instantly at a high price of $5.00 each and a My Little Pony hit $7.00 week of release.   Batman, Skyward, Thor, Sonic, Sesame Street, Zombies, Ben 10, Spider-man are some of the titles this year.
WATSON AND HOLMES (NEW PARADIGM 2013) Small print run of 3,800 copies between 2 regular covers sold out instantly and brought sales of up to $50.00 each in first week and then cooled off.   Print run was so small that it did not even rank in the Top 300 of the month.  Currently #1 sells at above $10 and #2 sells at $7.00.   We helped bring awareness to this amazing book before release date.
INJUSTICE YEAR TWO #1 (DC 2014)  Injustice Gods Among Us series ended after 12 issues and is retitled in 2014.  Some early high sales of #1.

CLONE (IMAGE 2012) On July 15th 2013 it was announced that the new TV series was official and that drove up prices on #1 even though it has a larger print run over 23,000.   Diamond still had copies in warehouse up to this news announcement and then sold its last 1,000 copies within days.   #1 currently at $10.00 – all issues selling better now and sold out at Diamond. Note how the print run has dropped drastically.  Issue #1 has almost 500% the print run of #9.

UBER #0-1-2-3   Sold out printings instantly.  Originally I felt this title was being speculated on too heavily but many sales above cover have proven the demand for this series.   I personally believe this is the single best looking comic of 2013 with glossy paper and amazing colors and artwork.  Some amazing variant covers make it a big job to collect every cover version of each issue.   The first issue was #0 and not #1.  #0 is the rare ones to find.  #0 has a 2nd printing called “enhanced edition”.   Print runs on each individual cover are very low.  There are 4 regular covers of each issue so when you take the worldwide print runs you have to divide it by 4 to get the real print run of each cover.  This makes it more obvious how rare each individual cover is.  In fact there are only about 2,700 copies of each cover of the first issue #0.   Diamond monthly rankings for each issue and the combined print run of all the covers

3D VILLAINS MONTH WEEK #4 (DC 2013) 13 different 3D covers came out in week #4 of the villains month campaign.  Here are the highest prices achieved for each.  Some high sales actually came in pre-sales online.  Most prices have settled to about 50% of these listed prices.       Week Four   Joker’s Daughter at $110.00    Doomsday at $20   Black Adam at $20   Killer Croc at $13   First Born at $13   Man-Bat at $13   Bane at $12   Sinestro at $12   Secret Society at $12   Ocean Master at $12   Parasite at $11.   Joker’s Daughter is without the single most hyped up and hottest comic of the entire year and may have set world record prices for a pre-sale of a new release as collectors were paying up to $110.00 each for a copy of this book just to make sure they got one.   That is paying almost 40x cover price before it even came out.   Very few customers got a copy unless they were a regular file customer for Batman: The Dark Knight series.  It was the hottest of all the 3D covers and the hottest comic of the entire year.   However the downside I predicted is that prices could only come down and that has already started to happen.

Top 200 Hottest Comic Titles and recent Back Issues during LATE MARCH 2014

Top 200 Hottest Comic Titles and recent Back Issues during LATE MARCH 2014

Bi-weekly column and list compiled by comics historian Terry Hoknes of www.HoknesComics.com – hoknes@hotmail.com

This chart is styled like the old classic Wizard Magazine Top 10 Hottest Comic charts that were published every month in the 1990′s.

HotComics201403Late

#1 MS MARVEL (MARVEL 2014) #1 1st printing of #1-2 both sold out and interest high in new Muslim superhero and prices hit high of $27.00 for #1 regular cover and tons of sales around $10.00 recently.

#97 NUMBERCRUNCHER #1 (TITAN 2013) New miniseries from small publisher sold out instantly – nobody has copies for sale.

Did not even chart on the monthly Top 300.   High sale of $13.00.   #3 sold out even before day of release.

#98 EXTINCTION PARADE (Avatar) 4 different covers – high quality format similar to Uber.  Online pre-sales were doing well above cover.  Print run of each cover was less than 5,000 each.    In November talk of a TV show heated up the series a little bit.

#99 FARLAINE THE GOBLIN #1 (STUDIO FARLAINE 2013)  New small print publisher – possibly smallest distributed comic of the year with print run of only 1350.

#100 NOWHERE MEN (Image) #1-3 prices had peaked at $40,25,15 in March.

3D VILLAINS MONTH WEEK #3 (DC 2013) 13 different 3D covers came out in week #3 of the villains month campaign.  Here are the highest prices achieved for each.  Some high sales actually came in pre-sales online.  Most prices have settled to about 50% of these listed prices.      Week Three   Clayface at $20   Dial E at $46    Eclipso at $20   Deathstroke at $25   The Rogues at $15    Cheetah at $14     Penguin at $13    Ra’s Al Ghul at $13     Arcane at $13    Black Hand at $12   Scarecrow at $12    Shadow Thief at $12   Lex Luthor at $11    H’el at $7

Comics Sales 2014 – February – Surprise high and low sales report

Market report by comics historian Terry Hoknes – hoknes@hotmail.com of www.HoknesComics.com

SoldOutComics201402

Every month Diamond Distributors reports the top 300 best selling highest ordered new comic books of the month

Retailers order new products 2 months in advance and must predict how well new comics will sell for them.

What happens every month is some titles are over-ordered and some retailers under-order.

As a stereotypical rule most retail shops will order extra heavy on all DC and Marvel titles knowing they might have potentially longer shelf life.  All other smaller publishers most retailers will NOT take the same risk with financially.

Therefore the best selling comics of the year are predictably from the “big 2″ publishers and the smallest print runs and books that sell out the quickest are from the smallest publishers.

Let’s analyze the best selling comics of the past month.  In the following list I will make notes of any comics I believe stand out specifically for having higher or lower orders than might have been expected.  This will strongly affect the future back issue prices of these comics.

Batman holds continuously as the best selling ongoing series but sales have been down and sales this month were so poor in comic shops that only 1 comic sold over 100,000 copies.

Harley Quinn sales stay decently strong and each issue has been selling out and going to 2nd prints.   If popularity stays up the early issues could eventually become valuable for future collectors.

Walking Dead – same as Harley Quinn.  Orders are quite high but issues do sell out and many go to 2nd prints.  If the TV series continues for a few more years these issues are likely to see price increases for future collectors.  Walking Dead has 2 issues in the top 10 – this is a first for the title ever!

2014 is the year that Marvel is restarting all their series with new #1′s.  None of them had crazy high orders and since Marvel only prints whats ordered they all sell out and have 2nd prints immediately.

Some very major series debut with decent but definitely not impressive numbers:  Wolverine, Fantastic Four, Punisher, Ms Marvel.

Ms Marvel had the most hype of the 4 and yet had the smallest order and sold out.  Marvel debuted other titles with even smaller print runs yet so these are the ones to watch out for if the public enjoys them.

Batman Jokers Daughter #1 continued its popularity and decent 51,000 orders.

Most of DC’s issues hit #28 this month and many steampunk variant covers that are all the rage right now. With the regular covers having print runs of only about 35,000 the variants will be a lot less common than the big print books.   Action / Wonder Woman etc.

Looking at the rest of the list with a quick overview I will mention titles that I think the print runs were too high or too low.

If the print runs were too high then those copies are just gonna sit on shelves.

If the print runs were too low it likely sold out immediately at Diamond and in comic shops and has the best chance of all new comics to go up in value quickly.

PRINT RUNS TOO HIGH ?

As usual most Marvel/DC/Dark Horse comics do not sell out and retailers take bigger chances making these books unlikely to ever go up in value.

PRINT RUNS TOO LOW ?

Devils Hopyard #1 – 2,200 from Arrden Entertainment sold out instantly and hit $15.00 already

Black Science #4 came in at a decent 26,000.   This was the best selling Image comic of the month (not counting Walking Dead). Sales have only slightly picked up so its likely going to be another sellout for this issue which keeps going to 2nd prints.

Lazarus and Deadly Class are the only 2 other Image titles that still sell over 20,000 copies.  Image sales overall keep dropping on almost all titles.

Manifest Destiny #4 13,200 – why is the hottest comic on Earth so underordered by retailers !?!?!??!

Revenge #1 17,300 / Fuse #1 15,900 / Undertow #1 14,800 / Apocalypse Al #1 14,000 / Mercenary Sea #1 10,700 / One Hit Wonder #1 9,700

Once again Image comics debuts a bunch of new series this month and the sales keep dropping month to month.   Any quality books are selling out quickly in advance at Diamond and retailers are not taking any chances.

Here are the Image comics that sold less than 5,000 copies this month:

Bounce #10 4,900 / Drumhellar #4 4,500 / Minimum Wage #2 4,100 / Krampus #3 4,000 / Voice In The Dark #4 3,400 / Think Tank #12 2,900 /

Royals Masters Of War #1 – new DC title with great reviews small orders at 12,700.

Cryptozoic Man #4 11,200 – still fairly small orders for the last issue of this popular series

Bunker #1 10,300 – sold out instantly with talks of a new movie – instant price increases.

Steam Wars #4 – a new issue of Star Wars done steampunk style – small print run as usual at only 1,500 copies.

PRINT RUNS – TOSS UP ?

Turok Dinosaur Hunter #1 – many variant covers with print run of 30,000 – still a high number and it did sell out but the variants will have over inflated demand so hard to say the future of this one.

Vampire Diaries #2 – TV show from DC major publisher but print run only 6,000 – either demand is not there any longer or retailers are not taking any chances.

GI Joe Comics – there are a lot of new series released each month but most have print runs only about 5,000 – long run these books could be harder to find.

White Suits #1 – Dark Horse 5,000 – very safe print run

DC Villains Month 3D cover 2nd print complete set – only 2,200 sets at $199.99 were made making these 2nd print 3D covers very rare for a DC product.   Demand could possibly grow for the more popular ones like Jokers Daughter and Harley Quinn.

Manifest Destiny #1 – 3rd printing – print run only 1,800 copies – demand is so high for this title that 3rd print might go up in value.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 3/12/14

[scrollGallery id=338]

There aren’t many front-runners coming this Wednesday, but here are a few comics to possibly check out.

A few years ago InvestComics ran a special article regarding the female superhero on the big screen. Of course InvestComics being ahead of the curve as always, we all recently heard the whispers/rumors on line regarding the Black Widow being the first in line to start the female moment as Marvel’s first major female superhero to hit the screen. While that’s all well and good, the question is when are we going to have the REAL first female superhero? One with a mask, costume, and or a cape. Black Widow wears sexy black latex that anyone can probably find in a night club at 2am in New York City.

So who would be a good first edition into the female superhero realm on the big screen? Well there are too many to even start naming names, but the usual suspects will always be Wonder Woman and Supergirl. Besides those two DC characters, there is a possible answer for Marvel in the cape department and she makes yet another attempt at captivating the comic book fandom this week. This will most likely meet the same fate that so many efforts before have, but hey they never give up! And yes it will fail again, don’t kid yourself. Captain Marvel (2014 8th Series) #1 comes with 5 variants. Although the first issue here will sell out, no amount of variants covers will be able to save this series from its ultimate demise. Don’t mean to be a Debbie downer about this, but there is only one thing that will ever save Carol Danvers and that is a movie. So for a good read you’ll pick up the new series this Wednesday. For the speculator side of things you’ll be hunting down Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (1968) for the first appearance of Carol Danvers, then you’ll go get your hands on Ms. Marvel #1 (1977), that of course is Carol’s first Marvel appearance. All and all the new series will simply bring no cash back, while the first appearances are nice comics to have in your portfolio.

There are two other number one comics coming out that will not last very long, but the first issues will probably sell out. Secret Avengers (2014) 3rd Series #1 and Avengers Undercover (2014) #1. Do not look to capitalize on these at all. Very short resale value if any at all really. One quick mention about Avengers Undercover (2014) #1. The solicit mentions “New Talent award winner Dennis Hopeless” as one of the key selling points for this comic. One of Dennis’ earliest works dates back to 2007’s GearHead #1 from Arcana. So why exactly is Marvel mentioning “new talent award winner” from someone that’s been with the comics industry for quite some time now? Well for one, to sell books, second, to sell a book they don’t really have much confidence going in.

Legends of the Dark Knight 100 Page Super Spectacular (2013) #2 will have all sorts of very cool creators all over it like the first issue did. Be sure to pick up this $9.99 book because these kinds of comics always seem to have a first appearance or a first work from a creator.

Rounding out the week are a bunch of number one issues you should check out. Stray Bullets the Killers (2014) #1 (Image Comics), Crow Pestilence (2014 IDW) #1, Returning (2014 Boom) #1, Liberator Earth Crisis (2014 Black Mask) #1, Nosferatu Wars (2014) #1 (Dark Horse), Magnus Robot Fighter (2014 Dynamite) #1, and Monster and Madman (2014 IDW) #1.

Invest wisely.

Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 2/5/14

30474_20120422194521_largeIt’s Superbowl Sunday 2014. The NFL’s first appearance in a big market company came in 1991’s NFL SuperPro #1 from Marvel Comics. Creators attached were Nicieza, Delbo, DeCarlo, Frenz, Sinnott, and Legend John Romita Sr. Nice line up right? And a Spidey appearance! Too bad the comic is pediatrics office material. If anything, it was a fun comic!

One particular comic really has our attention this week. No it’s definitely not Ms. Marvel #1, more on her in a bit. But the comic that has our ears peered up is Marvel Knights Spider-Man (2013) #5. Not only does this issue possess a very cool cover from Marco Rudy, but a history making comic here folks! Well that’s according to Marvel, so we’ll take this with a grain of salt. Curiosity does have the best of us here though. The issue promises “….the craziest two page spread in comic book history!” Yes, you read that right. Now Marvel must deliver. What do you think? Will they? Take it off the shelf and take a looksee.

DC will be milking the recent success of Jokers Daughter with the release of Batman Joker’s Daughter (2014) #1. The character still remains a mysterious one as does the speculation market. As DC rams the character down our throats, look for pricing across the board to level off……a lot. Simply put, too much of a good thing is never good. Holding back a bit on the Jokers Daughter would help the speculative market immensely. Giving a steady diet is what the doctor should order here, but we know that’s not going to happen. DC will beat this character to death to the point no one will care about her. A perfect example of this would be the Lobo character back in the day. Of course it’s happened countless times since then, but Lobo was so hot at one time and then just sort of faded away because of the overkill. Deadpool comes to mind too. Marvel released a new number one issue last week with “Deadpool” in the title and retailers are probably trying to figure out a way to give them away at this point. Too much of a good thing is not always good.

Case in point with Punisher (2014 10th Series) #1 and Ms. Marvel (2014 3rd Series) #1. Punisher was in that same boat at one time, appearing in every single comic imaginable. Frank Castle even teamed up with Archie at one point. Although his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974) is a steady book, it’s become a “slow” steady book. Still a good investment, but you’ll have to wait a while for any sort of real return on that comic. A good hold book these days.

You know what Carol, Sharon, Karla, Deidre, and Kamala all have in common? They were all Ms. Marvel’s at one time. Now with Marvel’s latest Ms. Marvel #1 they are doing what any normal business model would do and that’s a money grab. Nothing wrong with making money right? But when it comes at the expense of selling an ethnicity, it’s a bit disappointing. Marvel did the same exact thing with Miles, an African American Spider-Man. Marvel can spin it anyway they’d like, but they got what they wanted and that’s major press on that announcement.  The same holds for the press they received on the new Ms. Marvel. Yes she’s Muslim. She’s the first Muslim Super-Hero ever in the Marvel Universe. Why must we go down this road again exactly? Money, yes that’s right. All this being said, Captain Marvel #14 (2013), the first appearance of Kamala Khan and the Ms. Marvel #1 issue will reward nicely in the aftermarket because of the ridiculous hyperbole surrounding it. Do not, I repeat, do not think holding onto this comic will bring bigger fortunes down the road. It will not. Marvel will realize after a 12 issue run or so, with slumping sales, they’ll cancel the series and Ms. Marvel, no matter what race will go back to being that third rate character……in turn leaving you with a bunch of worthless comics.

Let me clarify one thing though. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a having an African American or Muslim super-hero. Why not just do it without the fanfare? Exploiting a superheroes ethnicity, sexuality (gay), and or any other human element for a mere profit instead of awareness is not educational but a lack of judgment of making these superheroes to be “different” and not within the fabric of society as everyday people, but outsiders. I like to think we’re better than this.

Marvel throws another Wolverine #1 (relaunch) at us. Number 5 for those keeping score at home. Wolverine (2014 5th Series) #1 will be as big a bore as it’s expected to be. He’s holding a gun on the cover. Wow. Loki brings the same sentiments here with Loki Agent Of Asgard (2014) #1. This cover is a huge bore, sorry Jenny Frison, but you’ve done much better.

In X-Men (2013) 3rd Series #10 we will see the recruitment of two female characters, Typhoid Mary and the Enchantress. Typhoid Mary’s first appearance in Daredevil #254 (1988) was a hot commodity at one time. Nowadays you can probably find this comic in the 50 cent long boxes. Still a very cool book to own if you don’t already. Journey Into Mystery #103 features the first appearance of the Enchantress. Jack “King” Kirby is all over this comic. A must own.

Captain America (2012 7th Series) #16 will focus on Jet Black once again. Her first appearance happened way way back in Captain America #1 of this series.

Superior Carnage gets his own annual this week; Superior Carnage (2013) Annual #1. Looks like a great read, check it out.

Ghost Solider will be making their presence known again in Action Comics (2011 2nd Series) #28 this week. Check out the first appearance a couple of issue prior in #26.

Green Lantern (2011 4th Series) #28 will be one of those cool flip issues, with Red Lanterns #28. All that with a $2.99 price tag.

One of the best buys this week has to go out to Turok Dinosaur Hunter (2014 Dynamite) #1. Definitely get one of the higher end variants to flip. As always a CGC signature series (9.8 or higher) will fetch the most bucks. Look for a sellout on this book and a spike in the Valiant series from 1993. And no you’re not seeing double, the Dynamite cover pays homage to the Valiant series. At least we hope Dynamite relates that someplace, otherwise it’s a ripoff.

If you’re looking for a bunch of first appearances in one comic this week, check out Sonic Universe (2009) #60. And also check out the new comic from Image Comics Apocalypse Al (2014) #1. Writer J. Michael Straczynski on this one, a sure sellout, and you better get your hands on this one.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.
