Gamora #1 – The first solo series from the female muscle of the Guardians of The Galaxy group. Sales are off to a great start. Some variants are already sold out.

Captain America Sam Wilson #16 – Misty Knight picks up the shield. It looks like a good fit. More of this in 2017? Maybe…..

Deadpool And Mercs For Money #6 – The Rainbow Deadpool Squad make their return. Another prediction, we’ll probably see more of them in 2017.

Justice League Suicide Squad #1 – Two DC Comics teams go head to head. Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

Mighty Captain Marvel #0 – Another Captain Marvel relaunch. This series (how many issues??) will be written by novelist Margaret Stohl. This will be Margaret’s first written comic book series. We’re in.

NOTE. Please understand that when InvestComics releases the Hot Picks article on Thursday/Friday that many of the independent comics may not be available on Ebay yet. Be sure to check back and click the links or cover(s) to see if the books you want have been listed on Ebay. They usually show up, so be sure to check back!

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: We have three comics this week under $100. Shazam #1 (1973) 8.5. First appearance of Marvel Family in DC Universe. Origin of Captain Marvel retold. Press this and possibly get a 9.0? At $79.99 buy it now, that’s a buy….it….now.  Not too familiar with these Michael Turner Aspen DC Comics, but this one looks nice for only $59.99. Harley Quinn #1 (2016) 9.8 Michael Turner sketch variant.  Amazing Adventures #1 (1970) 5.0. First solo Black Widow story. Cover by Jack Kirby and John Romita. Art from Jack Kirby and John Buscema. All this for only $84.

Gamora gets her first solo series ever. Gamora #1 will have writer Nicole Perlman and artist Marco Checchetto see Gamora off to begin her solo career. She has a strong presence on screen, but will that equate to a strong showing in the funny books? We’ll have to watch and see on this one. We have confidence that Nicole and Marco will keep things interesting. Strange Tales #180 (1975) is the first Gamora appearance. The cosmic master, Jim Starlin is all over this one too. Story, art, inks, colors and cover art. An obvious classic. A Gamora #1 variant pays homage to New Mutants #1 (1983). Cover by Bobby Rubio. There is also the sexy (what a surprise) J. Scott Campbell variant. That one seems to be in much demand (what a surprise). Oh and Star-Lord #1 comes out too. There is a variant that pays homage to Uncanny X-Men #138 (1980). The variant is done by Chris Stevens.

Over many years, there have been several characters to have taken the Captain America mantle. So many in fact, it’s too many to list here. There have been a few women to run with the shield, but most or all the time within the alternate Marvel universe. It’s no secret that Disney has set out on a mission regarding their comics as far as gender and their demo reach is concerned. The female hero/villain has a very large presence in today’s comic market and now Marvel branches out once again (possibly) to switch the gender tables on one of their characters. It seems as though Misty Knight is borrowing that Captain America mantle from Sam Wilson in Captain America Sam Wilson #16. And judging from the Paul Renaud cover, she is not playing around. Will this become a ‘thing’? Will she keep the shield? Star in her own title with a shield of her own? Misty Knight first appeared in Marvel Team-Up #1 (1972). Her First full appearance was in Marvel Premiere #21 (1975).

Number zero comic issues are silly. There, we said it. They make no sense, but sometimes comic companies insist on doing the silliness of a zero issue before their number one issue. Such is the case for Marvel’s Mighty Captain Marvel #0. We’re not saying any zero issues aren’t good or this particular zero issue won’t be good, just saying there is nothing that cannot be done in a number one issue that can be done in a zero issue. Count up from number one and that’s it. Have a prologue issue with no number if need be instead……why zero? Anyway, let’s get back to the new Mighty Captain Marvel #0. Zero……….okay okay we need to get back on track, we apologize. Totally having fun here, we really don’t care that much. At all actually. The new Captain Marvel comic will be the first ever regular comic series from writer Margaret Stohl. She made her comic book debut introducing us to Red Widow in Mockingbird Shield 50th Anniversary #1. So check out the new series from Margaret Stohl and artist Ramon Rosanas.

Deadpool And Mercs For Money #6 will feature the return of Rainbow Deadpool Squad. The Rainbow Deadpool Squad first appeared earlier this year in Deadpool #4. Just like we predicted spinoff series’ for the original members of the Mercs For Money team, we’ll say to watch out for a Deadpool Rainbow Squad team book somewhere down the line eventually.
Riri Williams continues her quest, read her story in Invincible Iron Man #2.

DC is calling Justice League Suicide Squad #1 the start of the first major storyline within the realm of Rebirth. Brought to us by writer Joshua Williamson and artist Jason Fabok. We were at New York Comic Con this past week. Below is a snippet video of our press coverage. We had tremendous coverage (as we always do) on all of our social media outlets, but we always make these videos every year when we come back for our fans. Enjoy!

IC 100 Club Pick: Swamp Thing #6 CGC graded 9.0 (1973). Anytime a collector is able to purchase a 9.0 signed book from a LEGEND such as Bernie Wrightson, there should be absolutely no hesitation in buying that book. Here, case in point is a Swamp Thing #6, CGC graded 9.0 for $99 Buy It Now with a Bernie Wrightson signature. There is no question that a collector must have this in their collection. Then check out one of our first InvestComics Creator Spotlights; Bernie Wrightson (click image below). We released this back in early 2015 with the release of our new site, so don’t mind the messiness in the article, just buy things from this creator, he’s a LEGEND. That’s it. Nuff said.

Once in while on new comic book Wednesday there is a comic that we know we’re about to tout with great glee. This week is one of those times. A story line that will aim to please and will have speculators peeking in as well. Batman #9 is the book that collectors need to check out this Wednesday. It’s the first part of a story line named “I Am Suicide.” We love that title. This title is a prologue on what is to come. Batman has to break into Arkham Asylum to retrieve one of his greatest adversaries ever; Bane. The reasoning is to recruit a few of his foes to form his very own Suicide Squad to rescue Gotham Girl and Psycho-Pirate. The modern day Batman Suicide Squad team starts right here. You really need to get in on the ground floor and that ground floor starts in this issue.

Green Lanterns #6 debuted the most powerful ring of all; the Phantom Ring. This Wednesday in Green Lanterns #9 “The Phantom Ring” part one!

So many delays, puts the Dark Knight III series into the “oh is that coming out this month? I didn’t know that.” phase. Dark Knight III The Master Race #6 makes it to the new comics shelf this week with the tag line “Is Gotham ready for the new Batgirl?” Here’s a better question “Does anyone care at this point?” Delays and too much time between books kills momentum and interest.

What is it with the names of some of the new comics these days? Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye #1? Okay. Why not just Cave Carson #1? So pretentious, no?

Marvel will put out an origin story about a hammer. Not just any hammer of course. Thor’s hammer: The Mighty Mjolnir. Check out the hammer story in Mighty Thor #12. We bet no one (most no one) at Home Depot or Lowes knows about this hammer.

The latest Marvel Comics sensation is Deadpool Back In Black. This week, Deadpool Back In Black #2 comes out and it will sell out like the first issue did. There will probably be a lower print run (obviously) of the second issue, so get on this if you want a first print. The Ron Lim Venompool cover is solid, but it’s the Salva Espin homage cover of Amazing Fantasy #15 with Power Pack (and a clown!) that wins. Anyone remember what InvestComics has said about Power Pack over the past few years?? Since 2010. We actually touched on it more recently; InvestComics Hot Picks #437 (August). Yes it will probably happen eventually, you’ll see. Just remember to give us credit and not to be such a nerd and take the credit. Thanks!

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Sticking with Deadpool, he seems to be following in the footsteps of Batman in the gathering/assembling of a team in Deadpool Too Soon #1. The difference between him and Bats’ team is that his team does not consist of a bunch of adversaries. Squirrel Girl, Rocket Raccoon, Howard The Duck, Ant-Man, Groot and the Punisher join forces. Like we always say, we don’t make this stuff up, we just report it.

Captain America Sam Wilson #14 features the villain Flag-Smasher smashing things up! A ridiculously beautiful cover by Marcos Martin adds to the awesomeness here. The hash tag movement Marvel is trying to start is right there on the cover for fans to see, #TakeBackTheShield. So what are you waiting for?? Start the hash tag movement! Oh and the most recent Flag-Smasher character first appeared in Deadpool #43 (2015).

Fans will learn more about Alice in A-Force #10. Alice first appeared in the previous issue; A-Force #9 and made a photo cameo in A-Force #8. That’s your Alice roundup!

Doctor Doom becomes Iron Man for the first time in Infamous Iron Man #1. Lots of pointless variants accompany this one.

Chapter House Publishing turns up creative firepower this Wednesday with two amazing Archie Comics creators debuting a new series. Die Kitty Die #1 with be brought to you by writers Dan Parent and Fernando Ruiz and Artist Dan Parent and Fernando Ruiz! Want more repeating? Okay. Look for great interest here as Chapter House Publishing knows how to put a product together very well and the creators are veterans that know how to put a product together very well. Told you we’d do that, now go out and check this comic out.

Cheryl Blossom makes her debut in the new Archie Comics universe. Check out Archie #13 for the vixen known as Cheryl Blossom!

IC 100 Club Pick: X-Men #10 (1965) graded 4.5. This is the first Silver Age appearance of Ka-Zar. Although it’s a lower grade, the price is right for this Silver Age beauty. Priced at only $98.99 with free shipping. Jack ‘King’ Kirby art and cover. Stan Lee writes. An absolutely great Silver Age book for $98.99.

And speaking of secrets, Civil War II Amazing Spider-Man #2 will reveal a person to turn on Peter that he’d never expect. Who will it be?
Civil War II Gods Of War #2 will introduce the team; Gods Of War.

The InvestComics Hot Pick of the week goes to DC’s New Super-Man #1. Many fanboys cannot wrap their heads around the fact that Super-Man is an Asian character in this series. The ridiculous notion that fanboys actually think their opinions matter is comedic onto itself, but some of the uproar shows how far off some of the actual thinking is from fanboy comic fans. Adult comic fans accept the change and or just go with the flow. They’ll give it a shot, they like it, they like it, they don’t, they don’t. Some fans need to booster up a bit and try new things once in a while and stop judging a book by its cover, or in this case; race. Which is even worse.

This total new take on “Super-Man” is a refreshing one. Buy this comic and give it a shot. Writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Viktor Bogdanovic are the creators and that in itself is enough to make us want to give this comic a try.

DC’s successful Rebirth line continues. It’s such a hit that many comic book stores are limiting their customers to one one copy each. Here are two to look out for this week. Hal Jordan And The Green Lantern Corps Rebirth #1 will bring back fan favorite Ethan Van Sciver to a Green Lantern title. Nightwing Rebirth #1; creators Tim Seeley (art) and Yanick Paquette (writer) are going to be responsible for making Nightwing a major part of the DC Universe once again. The Babs Tarr variant will be a sold out comic.

Any new Image comic proves to be a great story. Horizon #1 is no exception. Follow the story of Zhia Malen, her first appearance, and the invasion of her planet…..from planet earth.

Sabrina #6 from Archie Comics will give us the origin of Salem. Yes, the cat! Awesome!
Best selling author Sarah Fine starts on her 4 issue series; Reliquary Mayhem & Magic #1, from Jet City Comics.
Aspen Entertainment readers get ready for Aspen Universe Revelations #1! This comic will start the new look Aspen Universe and combine all of their characters. It’s Marvel NOW! And DC Rebirth, but from Aspen Entertainment.

The Inhumans movie will be arriving in 2019. By then, Infinity War part II will have hit the screen. A question one may ask here is, will the Inhumans pick up where the Avengers movies cease? Short answer, probably yes. Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man (additions Wasp, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Vision) will fill in the new Avengers team roster after the current team is dismantled in Infinity War I & II. The Avengers can and will continue with an all new lineup one day, but until then, the Inhumans will probably take the mantle for a while. It makes total sense here. Some of the Avenger stars have become way too big for their roles, commanding more money and are also getting “older” as the series progresses. Remember when the phase just started? Chris Evans? Chris Hemsworth? Scarlett Johansson? Robert Downey Jr.? And the list goes on. No one really knew if any of this would work. It did. Now that “it did” and the success has and will run its course, ending with Infinity War II (2019), the only logical monetary thing to do is…..start over. Enter the Inhumans.

Since we all know that Marvel does not own the rights to the X-Men, this will be their workaround. Their version of the X-Men and come hell or high water, Marvel will make this work. Just to drive home a point that they don’t need the X-Men, they have the Inhumans.

It’s all going to start the same way it all began back in 2008 with Robert Downey Jr. Get that name everyone recognizes and get it to work. So with the Inhumans, the character that needs to be front/center and to work is Black Bolt. He’s the leader of the Inhumans. The King of Attilan. Who will be chosen to lead the way to another successful 11 year (more or less) run? Black Bolt will be the next “Tony Stark” because of the lead in to introduce the next phase. The character (the team) will play an intricate role in setting the table for everyone to follow.

The Avengers Infinity War parts I & II will probably (most likely) end many of the Marvel on screen careers. Our favorite characters will be gone. Marvel will set a new precedence in offing characters at a ridiculous clip. The reality is, Robert, Chris, Scarlett, Jeremy and all the others who have been around these movies for years are going to move on eventually to other roles other than superheroes. What better way to add finality to an unprecedented run than sending our heroes to sacrifice themselves against the greatest threat the planet and universe has ever seen, Thanos. Do not kid yourselves, there will be many deaths in the Infinity War parts I & II. In actuality, there has to be. The stadium is over capacity. There has to be closure so that the new blood can come in. That new blood being the Inhumans.

So in 2019, it’s all going to come to a head. 11 years to arrive to the greatest battle of all time. The greatest battle in cinema since dad and son went at it with their Lightsabers. It’s going to take every character fans have seen throughout the years and mash them into two movies. The Avengers cannot and will not defeat Thanos alone. Not happening. The Avengers, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Winter Solider, Loki, Spider-Man, Warlock and so many more will probably appear in both films. Most will not make it to the next phase.

The comic book speculator has four years to compile their Inhumans comics library. What InvestComics has given the speculative community throughout our ten years is the ability to buy low and….sell high. This checklist is just that. Some of these books are movers right now, but their value in four years time will be immensely different. Tremendous upside here. Yes the first appearance of the Inhumans might be a bit pricey now, but it will not be anywhere near as close to the price it is now when 2019 rolls around. Think big. Think X-Men #1 (1963) or Giant Size X-Men #1 (1975). Marvel Studios’ version of the X-Men will become the next big franchise, do not miss this boat. Inhumans will be huge.

Most of these books if not all of them are extremely affordable…..for now. As time beckons, as news breaks, as announcements are made, as villains are cast, as the Infinity War movie starts coming into light, the Inhumans will become more and more of a household name and you will be very late to the party if you put things on hold until then. Be sure to thank InvestComics for throwing this early party now when the time comes.

As always, there will be missed books within the checklist below. We’re Inhuman, Ha! See what we did there?! There are many books listed. All kinds of first appearances, key issues and cool books in general. We simply do not know what the Inhumans movie will bring, so we tried to cover as many bases as possible for the speculator. If you have a comic you’d like to add, please help the fellow speculators in listing it below in the comment section. AND PLEASE READ THE DISCLAIMER on this site.

Fantastic Four #36 (1965) The first appearance of Medusa. Black Bolt’s main squeeze. Brought to us by the creative team of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott.

Fantastic Four #44 (1965) The first appearance of Black Bolt’s bodyguard (cousin) Gorgon.

Fantastic Four #45 (1965) First appearance of Black Bolt (cameo) and the first appearance of the Inhumans team. Lee, Kirby and Sinnott. A must own comic if you are truly in the speculative market. This comic also serves as the first appearances of Triton and Karnak. Must own.

Fantastic Four #46 (1966) First full appearance of Black Bolt. His first cover as well. Same creative team as the previous issues and the same speculative rules apply as well. A must own here.

Fantastic Four #47 (1966) Every hero needs an adversary. A sibling at that. In this issue, Black Bolt’s insane brother makes his debut; Maximus. This comic also has the first mention and appearance of the land called Attilan.

Thor #148 (1968) The first of three consecutive, most desirable comics to own (besides the first appearance) if one is collecting key Black Bolt books. The origin of Black Bolt starts here (in a backup story). Still very affordable right now, but this will in fact change. This is also the first appearance of the Wrecker. An absolute non-factor because this comic will triple in value in a few years because of the Black Bolt origin, not because of the Wrecker. Jack Kirby and Stan Lee.

Thor #149 (1968) The continuation of Black Bolt’s origin. Must own.

Thor #150 (1968) The Inhumans origin. Must own.

Marvel Super-Heroes #15 (1968) First solo Medusa story. Black Bolt appearance.

Will the Inhumans join in the fight along side the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy? Maybe. Maybe not, but this comic here is the first Avengers book the Inhumans appear in. Neal Adams art, Roy Thomas writes and John Buscema provides the cover. It’s also an origin story on Black Bolt and Maximus. Another must buy here.

Star Wars #7 will be a special one shot story on Ben Kenobi. Take a look at Kenobi ala’ yesteryear. We get to witness a young Ben Kenobi and the bad as* he really is (assuming he’s a bad as*). This one shot story will be brought to us by the creative team of Simone Bianchi (artist) and writer Jason Aaron. Look for this Star Wars comic to sell out quick. If the aftermarket bust loose a bit on this, sell at a high point, do not wait for “more money”. Remember you paid only $4.99 for the comic. Greed not only kills, it leaves you with a lot of comic books you cannot move. Plenty of variants to choose from as well. A $100 John Cassaday sketch variant looks nice, but pricey.

IDW Publishing has a hit on their hands; Shrinking Man #1. This comic comes from the best selling author Richard Matheson. He’s written some big boy books with no pictures; I Am Legend, A Stir Of Echoes, What Dreams May Come, Somewhere In Time, The Last Man on Earth, Duel, and the list goes on. Both the regular and variant comics are sold out. Probably a good idea to grab one of these. Not only for the speculative aspect, but it’s going to be a great read too.

When the Sex Criminals book came out it was well received in the aftermarket. The announcement of a possible TV option made things out of control in a hurry. It is now possible to buy a number one 9.8 graded copy on Ebay at $99 or less (including variants). Then there is Sex Criminals #11 coming this Wednesday. There will be five variants accompanying the next five comic releases of Sex Criminals (Thank you to Larry’s Comics for the correction on this from the earlier posting of this article). All five will be poly-bagged because of the extreme mature sexual content on its covers. The covers will be “covered” when shipped in a polybag. Understood the story of this comic brings this type of outrageous shock value, but a severe gimmick here to lure fanboys to buy a comic they really don’t need. We’re quite sure the covers are probably fantastic artistic covers, but XXX covers? The controversy and interest these comics probably stir up will be the driving force behind any speculative aftermarket bump. Controversy sells, but at the end of the line, controversy simmers down and no one cares eventually. Larry does say that he feels the sketch cover will command your attention. Listen to Larry, he knows the deal.

Click on any RED link or comic cover in the article to buy/bid on the comic right now. A new page will open, so you will not lose your place here.

Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #3 will feature a new costume for Deadpool and it looks very familiar. The cover alone here will garner interest from fans, so it’s a safe bet to pick this one up and enjoy it. A sell out will probably occur here.

Dive into Black Widow’s past; Black Widow #20. A semi-origin story on Natasha Romanoff. Should be an interesting read.

Hacktivist #1 Vol. 2 from Boom Studios is sold out. Regular cover and variants. Robin Son Of Batman #2 introduces Dragon’s Head. The Justice League Gods and Monsters DVD is awesome, get that right HERE. The Justice League Gods and Monsters Superman #1; Darwyn Cooke variant is sold out as is IDW’s Ghostbusters Get Real #2 EC variant. A bunch of DC Annuals hit this week. Deathstroke Annual #1 is a standout. Artist Tony Daniel will bring it as he always does on this title.

Secret Wars #1 Comicxposure Gabriele Dell Otto variant has been long since sold out. How about winning one from InvestComics? Thanks to Comicxposure this will happen! Stay tuned to the InvestComics website for details!

A very light week compared to the busy ones we’ve had for a long stretch there. Perfect time to catch up on those back issues you’ve been looking for. Go through those boxes at your local shop, there are probably a few gems sitting in there.

The biggest book to look out for this week has to be We Stand On Guard #1 (Image Comics). Not only will it probably be a fantastic read, but it’s written by Brian K. Vaughan. This deals with the invasion of Canada by the United States. Invasion with big robots. How much fun is this going to be? Lots! One key element pertaining to the speculative side that makes this comic very attractive is the no variant aspect to it. Just one cover release (as of right now) and this makes for less clutter in the market, thus making this comic a probable sell out more attractive.

Grant Morrison will have a creator owned book this Wednesday; Grant Morrison’s 18 Days #1 (Graphic India). All of the variant covers are limited to 1000 copies each and are sold out already. The regular cover is sold out too. You better grab this off the shelf if you want a copy, once they’re gone, they’re gone.

New Star Wars comics coming this Wednesday, Darth Vader #7 and Princess Leia #5. Buy any of the new Star Wars comics. The stories are great and for the possible speculative side as well. New movie will be hitting in December, who knows what possible character or villain could appear in the comic before the movie.

IDW publishing has a couple of books to look out this week. Onyx #1, a new sci-fi book from Chris Ryall with a very nice limited SDCC variant. And the new Mickey Mouse #1. Regular cover and variant sold out.

As InvestComics has matured over the years, it’s not very often that a book like Barb Wire #1 (Dark Horse) gets a mention. But when it’s Adam Hughes supplying the covers, well it has to be mentioned. Especially when the regular cover blows away the variant cover.

An all new featured article on InvestComics…..

Throughout the years InvestComics has explained that there is something within the speculative/collectors market that is just as important as the first appearance of a character. Sometimes an overlooked nugget, but most are privy to it. A characters second appearance is not only a fun get, but sometimes very affordable. Sometimes not, therein is the chance to make your decision as an investor to jump in or not. We cannot make that decision for you, nor would we. We will simply guide you and the rest is up to you.

We are proud to present a new regular feature on InvestComics called Second Appearances. Here you will see a list of comics featuring some A list characters and not so A list characters. Either way, the speculator will have an inside track on a characters second appearance. What if a character blows up and the first appearance is out of reach financially? Very simple actually, buy the second appearance. Some of the naysayers may say, what and why the second appearance? Well, the fact that two of the premiere grading companies (CBCS and CGC) recognize and highlight second appearances is clue enough. It’s a factor within the hobby. It is important, so why not go with the flow and start getting some of those second appearances? As said earlier, some of them are surprisingly affordable too.

The inaugural edition of InvestComics’ Second Appearances article.

The Amazing Spider-Man #195 (1979) Second Black Cat appearance. Marv Wolman writes, art by Keith Pollard.

Fantastic Four #53 (1966) The second Black Panther. Stan Lee writes, Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott art. First appearance of Klaw. Origin of both Black Panther and Klaw. A very nice buy right now.

Incredible Hulk Annual #5 (1976) The true second appearance of Groot. Appearing in a reprint issue after his first appearance, this comic is a NEW Groot story, thus making it more of a second appearance than the Where Monsters Dwell #6 (1970) comic. Written by Chris Claremont/Len Wein, art by Sal Buscema and cover by Jack Kirby.

From: InvestComics Hot Picks #374

GI Joe #214 variant InvestComicsAmazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #1 – This comic are selling like hot cakes on Ebay right now. The variants are being bought up at a regular clip. The Pasqual Ferry, Adi Granov, and J. Scott Campbell variants are out favorite.

Groot #1 – The talking tree gets its own comic. Will the tree say more than “I am Groot” throughout? Look for awesome sales here as Groot gets his first solo series. Readers know from this past Friday; InvestComics Hot Picks, we pointed out to get Groot’s first appearance a year and a half before the movie. So that is way before any announcement of the team ever occurred. Fans that took note have cashed in. Do you still have a chance? Read the InvestComics Hot Picks #374 and find out.

G.I. Joe #214 – The death of Snake Eyes is causing quite a stir. Looks like Ebay sellers at the moment are holding off a bit from selling off. Look for a big supply and demand frenzy at first. Things will cool down rather quickly, so be a smart speculator here.

Justice League #41 – Part one of the much anticipated Darkseid War. Yes there are epic story lines going on all over the place these days, but a Darkseid event is a must for any reader. A must.

Nonplayer #2 – The number issue has already hit its fourth printing and is selling for as high as $60 for the variant. $120 for a graded 9.8. So what will issue number two do?

Be sure to check out the InvestComics Hot Picks #374 for more Hot Picks. Sometimes a list of 5 simply isn’t enough!

A lot of number one issues coming out this week. Here are some of the DC books first;

Batman Beyond #1, this will be volume 5 number one. You know what that means? Five different times collectors have seen a number one issue pop up from Batman Beyond. That’s a lot. It kind of waters down the “premiere #1” issue deal a bit. That said, it doesn’t stop the high priced 1999 issue.  Anyways, Batman Beyond’s first appearance was in Batman Beyond #1 (1999). Bizarro #1, here’s an all ages book. Good to see DC is trying to get the little guys/gals back into comic books. Bizarro first appears in Superboy #68 (1958). And very funny variant here by Kyle Baker. Another all ages comic from DC; Bat-Mite #1. Count this reader in! And speculators, for you; Detective Comics #267 (1959). That’s the first appearance of Bat-Mite. One more thing, the variant is sold out. Midnighter #1 What will come of this series exactly? Who knows, looks cool though. Midnighter first appeared in Stormwatch #4 (1997).Written by Warren Ellis. Back in the 80’s the Omega Men team was awesome. Can they revisit that awesomeness with Omega Men #1? We will find out. Their first appearance is in Green Lantern #141 (1981). George Perez cover. Fantastic first appearance to have in your collection. Wonder Woman Annual #1 Check out what “old face” from the past shows back up.

Here is a rundown of some of the Marvel number one titles coming out on Wednesday.

With the new Marvel Universe on the horizon, we get more number one issues than we can handle. Or maybe we can handle them. Most would opt to just chill hitting the restart button, but we have Marvel and DC really shaking things up lately. All that said, Peter Parker will feel the wrath of the Secret Wars too. No one is safe. A safe bet is however, if there is a Spider-Man number one issue coming out, there will be a bazillion variant covers. That is so for the Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #1 comic coming out this Wednesday. Marvel isn’t shy about these variant covers. Ten at last count. Probably more than that as you read this article. The standouts as far as variants go are; Pasqual Ferry, Adi Granov, and J. Scott Campbell. Yes they are all nice, but these are our favorites. Too many variants that will sell for an absorbent amount of monies and then taper off. It’s the same formula here. So what about the actual comic? The only thing that makes this or any crazy amount of variants worth chasing is if there is a major introduction (their daughter?) within the pages, otherwise what you have here is a bunch of hyperbole with no substance to sustain the pricing during the immediate aftermarket wave. So what about this daughter Peter and Mary have? Is this a new take on their lives? Certainly looks that way. Having a child in any relationship changes things a whole lot! Maybe that will be the sticking point on keeping this comic relevant 10 years from now. And from the looks of it, the daughter may possess some of daddy’s DNA down a few issues later. Are we surprised here really though? Lets see where Dan Slott and Adam Kubert bring us.

The popularity of a talking tree has reached epic proportions. Groot #1 gets its own series. Who would have ever thought that Tales To Astonish #13 (1960) would become an untouchable book? InvestComics of course that’s who! A year and a half before the Guardians of the Galaxy movie hit, InvestComics informed speculators to buy this book. Check out the article right HERE. This was even before the characters were announced to appear! These days it’s so high on the depth chart right now it’s insane. Does the book have anymore wiggle room (uptick) to warrant a profit if you’re a buyer? Possibly yes if you can somehow get a real good buy on one. Here’s why. Groot will appear in the next Guardians movie and possibly beyond to the Infinity Wars movies. The Avengers will need all the help they can get when it comes to dealing with Thanos in those movies, so it’s probably a safe bet that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be teaming up with the Avengers. So Groot could possibly appear in another 3 movies before all is said and done. Maybe the love affair with audiences gets Groot a solo movie? Who knows? Either way, all this means more upside for Tales to Astonish #13.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Armor Wars #1; This story originally ran back in Iron Man #225 (1987). The biggest difference between then and now is the Iron Gwen variant this Wednesday. Iron Gwen? Really? Future Imperfect #1 was an original story back in 1992. Writer Peter David, art/ink and cover art from George Perez. Peter David writes the story again this Wednesday, but pencils by Greg Land this time. Hulk extraordinaire artist Dale Keown lends a variant cover. The original X-Tinction storyline dates back to Uncanny X-Men #270 (1990). Jim Lee, Chris Claremont, and Scott Williams were all over this. Marvel brings back the story 25 years later in X-Tinction Agenda #1 with lots of variants and a beautiful Mike Deodato Jr. variant. Skottie Young fans rejoice, Skottie writes and pencils this new series based on the little marvel universe. Giant Size Little Marvel #1 will be a guaranteed fun time.

The next big death issue has arrived speculators. G.I. Joe #214 will be providing the aftermarket with some serious buzz. Here is the thing, do not hold onto this comic too long or you will miss the top of the sell here. Be mindful of the market, time it correctly, if you don’t you will be left holding a comic with a decreased value and no demand. The hype will mostly likely be a short lived one. Snake Eyes is a big character in the G.I. Joe circles, not in popular culture. This isn’t a Captain America death where you see some dude you’ve never seen at your comic shop buying five copies. Although this is more of a G.I Joe/comic book speculator book, it still will command attention. Be prepared, and be alert. 1 year from now this will be long forgotten. The story won’t be because it’s a fantastic one, it’s the hype that surrounds it right now.

Click on the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on Ebay right now.

Learn more about Darkseid’s daughter in Justice League #41 as the first part of the Darkseid War goes full throttle. And the introduction(s) of new villains may arrive in here. Be on top of this comic speculators! Great David Finch Joker variant too. DC has many “epic” things going on these days. Well, as does the “other guys” too, but this week sees the epic storyline “TRUTH” roll out in Action Comics #41. And oh yes, is that Superman’s new costume (Levi’s) on the cover? We forgot about that already. That’s not a good sign. That Green Arrow #41 Bill Sienkiewicz Joker variant is as stellar as is the Green Lantern #41 Joker variant by Ben Oliver.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 2/4/15

This week InvestComics will begin a new way to help fans get the comics they want to buy either before they sell out or is featured in our Hot Picks article. With each recommended book featured in the article, fans will be able to click the link to be directed to Ebay. By being able to click and be directed right to Ebay, fans can now either use the buy it now option or place bids if they so desire. It’s a great option to have this feature because now if you forgot to tell your local shop or your favorite on line comic shop is out of a book, you now have the option to buy it or bid on it right away via the InvestComics link. It’s also fantastic for InvestComics fans because you now can click that first appearance, reintroduction, variant, graded comic, or anything we write up and buy it/bid on it right away before other fans buy it up. So if InvestComics has a link in RED, click it and buy it!

Star Wars #2 heads our way this Wednesday with some very nice variants. Not as many as its previous issue so that’s a good thing! Will Star Wars continue its hotness with their new home at Marvel? We’ll see.

There are a few variants that speculators may want to get this Wednesday to do a little flipping with. Get all of this comics signed and graded (as always, must be a 9.8 or higher), then sell them. Simple stuff here. First, there are so many pluses that accompany Spawn #250. It’s a mega-sized issue that features the return of the original Spawn, there is a rare Scottie Young variant, and then there is the Todd McFarlane/Greg Capullo variant. Get a double shot with both sigs; McFarlane/Capullo and you have a great book. Superman #38 seems to have made very little noise considering what its bringing this Wednesday. The comic will be double sized and have the following; Superman with new powers, Introductions/first appearances (or maybe re-introductions), New enemies (again, maybe reintroductions), and ready for this…? A new costume. Yes, Superman will don a new costume. Click the Superman #38 link now and buy your regular and variant copies on Ebay now before your local comic shop starts hoarding them or putting a $10 price tag on them. Wytches #4 will feature a variant cover from new upcoming superstar Babs Tarr. You must visit and like her Facebook page right HERE. Thanks to the VP of InvestComics on the heads on Tarr! “She’s the next Fiona Staples” as the VP said. Yes indeed. And while on topic about the great Fiona Staples, be sure to check out her special wraparound cover on Saga #25. Fiona will be the artist who catapults Archie Comics into the stratosphere when their relaunch occurs. Be ready for Fiona to bring it. You’ve been warned already on these pages about her and Archie Comics. You’ve been warned…..

Weird and funny thing about Avengers #41 this week. It features the same cover as Ultimates #1 from 2002. So with that, we get a sold out comic? Yep. Be sure to be on top of this one. It smells like one of those hot books to bust out. Not much of an explanation as to why the same cover, which means something very cool may be happening inside of that comic. Be sure to hit the links to buy your copies of Ultimates #1 for 99 cents before it may be too late and also the sold out Avengers #41. And awesome Noto variant. Check it out!

Another group(s) will make waves this week. Check out Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men Black Vortex Alpha #1. This story sounds like it’s going to be some fun. It features the main villain named Mr. Knife within the arc. Mr. Knife’s first appearance is right HERE in Legendary Star-Lord #3. Looks like another 99 cent book to be had. If the story heats up, well then we all know what happens to that 99 cent book right?

New Zodiax #1 from Astronaut Ink is showing signs of great sales. A good looking story with a short print run makes for some nice possibilities no? Click the link to buy your copies now!

Valiant will have a hit on their hands with Imperium #1. Some great variants to choose from here. The book will sell out, so be on top of it. Another sold out comic on the horizon will be Postal #1. A great read and a fantastic Linda Sejic variant to get. Look for Grant Morrison’s Nameless #1 to hit the ground running. The very creepy/dark Rat God #1 from Dark Horse will hit the shelves this Wednesday. Read that with the lights very dim in bed at night. Then good to sleep. Report back what you dream about! The one time red hot Enormous book will hit this week with Enormous #6. The streak will continue with sellouts for that book though.

Cluster #1 from Boom Studios looks like a great read as does Stray Bullets Sunshine and Roses #1 from Image Comics.

Return of the Living Deadpool #1 has a funny Ryan Stegman variant. And All New Captain America Fear Him #1 will be a good read.

Remember to click any of the comics in RED to be linked directly to the Ebay page of all the comics available of that issue. It’s a great tool to buy exactly what you want right away instead of hunting it down when it’s too late!

InvestComics was recently accepted as press for the first big Florida comic con of the season. Be sure to check out Shock Pop Comic Con and all their cool guest. Go HERE to their Facebook page and then go HERE to their website. Be sure to follow ALL of InvestComics social media to get live coverage of the show. InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 7/2/14

Everything you are about to read is All original material from InvestComics. 100% Authentic. No borrowed material ever, 100% InvestComics.

First order of business is to reiterate something that InvestComics has touched upon quite often, but maybe some new comers to the site are not aware of. Although InvestComics is in fact the best speculation comic book website on the planet, another fact is that THIS article each week and many others on the site recommend that you read comics too. While I do realize that speculation is not for everyone, I am a true believer of bringing collectors and fans alike together. No matter what, comic book fans can relate to each other like no other medium can. Whether you are a fan of the speculation side or a fan of the storyline, one thing is certain; we will always debate questions like “Who would win in a fight, Superman or Thor? Who is the bigger bad ass, Deathstoke or Deadpool? Is Moon Knight as comparable to Batman these days than ever?” The list of debates goes on, but you get the idea.

So many times during the course of an InvestComics Hot Picks article I will be sure to point out that there are probably some good “reads” coming out that Wednesday and that even if the spec market doesn’t equate to monetary gain, you still may gain the awesomeness of a great story. Yes money is fantastic, reading this article every week will help your aftermarket sales, but sitting down in a quiet room, dining room table, the living room, on your bed and reading a great story is in fact immeasurable. We as comic book fans and speculators can coexist together. The InvestComics Hot Picks has always made a point to inform readers that there are books that need to be checked out for the mere fact of a great read. So if you read, collect, or merely speculate, we all have one common thing. We all love comic books.

15901_20051209091407_largeshazam1Now let’s talk about a recent DC Comics announcement. The announcement touched on a few movie possibilities for several characters/books. There was one standout……..Shazam. Some may not see the brilliance in the possibility that lay before them within the spec market here. Not only would the character fit perfectly on the big screen, but it would make for a new franchise that would correct any mistakes on any of the Superman stumbles. It gives DC/Warner Bros. a chance to really expand on a character that many know and many don’t know of. Everyone knows Superman. There hasn’t been another character to challenge anyone with a cape that can fly, minus a hammer, a batarang, etc. on the big screen. The time has come to get another dude with a cape that can fly and isn’t a “boy scout”. Although many fans will say differently about Superman being a boy scout regarding the last flick, but don’t get that twisted because when Batman vs. Superman comes out, Clark will be the good boy and the friction will ensue between them. Back to Shazam, DC will have an open season with this character. Just like Superman, he has been redone in so many ways that you can essentially pick and choose which Shazam will best fit for the big screen. There is no set tone for him because the Shazam character has never been taken that seriously. Superman however has always been reverted back to the boy scout for the screen (minus the last movie). So when it comes to Shazam, it will be extremely interesting on which route they will take. I personally think that Shazam will be a very big deal. A huge one in fact. I’ve said this about so many characters on this site and a lot of them have come to fruition. Shazam is a lock. Besides owning Whiz #2 (1940), the first appearance of Captain Marvel, if you can afford that book, you need to get the very easy accessible (for now) Shazam! #1 (1973). This comic is the very first time DC’s Captain Marvel goes by the name Shazam. A recent graded 9.8 sold for only $487.50. There are some Near Mint raw copies available within the $30/$40 range. An absolute bargain right now. You heard it here first, on the greatest speculation web site on the planet, InvestComics.

[scrollGallery id=355]

There are three sketch variants that really need to be on your radar as possible signature series books for your collection and turnovers. Rocket Raccoon (2014 2nd Series) #1 will be accompanied by a few variants, but the Midtown Comics J. Scott Campbell sketch variant is a winner. Get this $20 variant CGC Signature Series and you’re looking at a nice payday. Buy it raw even; flip it in a couple of weeks. You’ll make some cash on this comic easy.  A ridiculously gorgeous Jim Lee sketch variant on Superman Unchained (2013 DC) #7 will sell for a premium if you can score a signature and a 9.8 or higher. And speaking of absolutely gorgeous, a  $300 Alex Ross sketch cover for Captain America (2012 7th Series) #22 would be a nice turnover if a sig/9.8 is attached.

1365253_ful 1365244_ful 1361417_fulThe cash cow, a.k.a. Marvel Comics will cashing in on the Guardians of the Galaxy frenzy with new comic series featuring Rocket Raccoon (mentioned earlier) and Star Lord in Legendary Star Lord (2014 Marvel) #1. A bazillion variant covers on this one is quite the overkill here, but the Midtown Comics variant would be a nice pick-up only to flip quickly. While the Raccoon will see much success, Star-Lord will probably see a hot out of the gate presence, but will fall flat eventually. Then you have Guardians of the Galaxy Galaxys Most Wanted (2014) #1 which features a story with Rocket Raccoon and Groot. It’s essentially a Marvel Team-Up comic with the Guardians name attached instead.  The cover alone will have heads turning on this one.

Hey InvestComics told you about Figment #1 and now Figment (2014) #2 is already sold out. Not only is it sold out, but a major on line comic store is limiting ONE per customer.

Fearless Dawn Hard Times (2014) #0 will sellout by this weekend. If you want to search for a comic that probably has a very limited print run and features the first appearance of Fearless Dawn; look for The Bomb #1 (2006) (Atom Bomb Comics).

DC Comics’ Earth 2 (2012 DC) #25 will feature a new Superman. An African American Superman that isn’t Steel or President Superman.

Batman Superman (2013 DC) #12 will have a character “with great strength”, but have no idea who they are. Intro? Pick it up, find out. And who is Gruesome George? Find out in Batwing (2011-) #33.

InvestComics Radar love; Scum of the Earth (2014) #1, Enormous (2014) Ongoing #1, Oz Age of Darkness (2014) #1, 100th Anniversary Special Fantastic Four (2014) #1, Tom Clancy Splinter Cell Echoes (2014) #1, Deadpool vs X-Force (2014) #1, and Hack Slash Son of Samhain (2014 Image) #1.

Read and Invest Wisely.

Comic Broker Report – Undervalued Moderns Special

The market can be slow to reflect the value of certain issues.  This can happen for many reasons.  Each month I try to give readers the opportunity to get in on a sleeper well before the market catches up.  Though I am not always right I try to select comics that are worth collecting even if you might never make a penny on the fast flip.  I have featured some of these comics in the past.  They make this list because they remain largely unknown to the collecting community.

Batman Volume 1 Issue 656

Batman_656

If you are looking for Damian Wayne’s first full appearance then here ya go!  Issue 655 along with its variant and other printings are often the ones collectors want but they only feature Batman’s son in shadows.  This issue is where we get to see the league trained badass for the first time!

Iron Man,Incredible Hulk,Nick Fury       Iron Man 2: Agents of Shield ( second appearance )

images Iron_Man_2_Agents_of_S.H.I.E.L.D.

It’s odd to me that Agent Coulson’s first appearance is so undervalued.  It’s pretty tough to find and features a character that is loved by most Marvel fans.  With Agents of SHIELD getting better with each episode I hope these two comics see significant increases in value.

Battle Scars 1,6

Battle_Scars_Vol_1_1 background

So if you don’t appreciate Coulson’s first actual appearance in a comic then you can pick up these two which feature his first appearance ( and named appearance ) in the regular Marvel Universe.

Th Invincible Iron Man ( 2008 ) 10,11

160951_20090130192741_large 161377_20120421132025_thumb 164423_20110703121943_large 164429_20120421132352_thumb 167473_20120421132609_thumbyhst-16722662390539_2253_2231834869

Ok there are a ton of these to hunt down.  Why?  Well recently the actor who voiced Iron Man’s A.I.  J.A.R.V.I.S. told us he’s playing the Vision.  This means that the A.I. that Stark created is becoming one of the most popular Avengers in the next film.  The Vision first appeared in Avengers 57 and it highly valued.  But as the film version will be bringing the Stark A.I. to life as an android,  these comics should be worth a lot more than the currently are.  Issue 10 features the first appearance of the RESCUE armor, made for Pepper Potts by Tony.  In Issue 11 we learn that the A.I. system in her armor is the J.A.R.V.I.S intelligence!  That makes these issues the first comic appearance of the intelligence system which will become the Vision in Avengers 2.  So far the hardest issues to find are the second print for issue 10.  This us due to the first cover for RESCUE.  Issue 10 has variants, the hardest one to find being the secret retailer variant.  The only way to tell is a barcode variation pictured above!

Elektra Assassin 2

7347_20061004163330_large

Ok I admit I am a huge Bill Paxton fan.

Once we learned that his character on A.O.S. was secretly a Hydra agent this book should have seen some market action.  It has a wonderful cover and is written by an industry great.

Action Comics 471

index

Despite many who were disappointing by the Man of Steel I have come to realize that it is a very good film.  Russel Crow actually steals it along with Zod’s top soldier Faora who first appears  in this issue of Action Comics.

Supernaturals 4

16901_20070524221442_large

It’s still amazing to me that Groot is coming to a theater near you in August.  For a character with less that 5 pre Copper Age appearances it just seems insane that an Alien like this is being thrust into the mainstream. To my knowledge this issue is his first appearance in the modern age.  This series inserted masks into the issues and I believe the ones with the Ghost Rider mask are the hardest to find.

Chuck Norris  and the Karate Kommandos 1

53442_20060801052851_large

First appearance of this legend is all you need to know.

Captain America 208, first appearance of Arnim Zola

If you geeked out as much as me with Zola’s incredible appearance in the Winter Soldier then I applaud your love of insanely twisted comic villains!

Rocket Raccoon – Checklist

Rocket Raccoon is set to make Disney a lot of money.  If they can pull it off there is no ceiling for this wise ass, gun toting animal.  But unlike many other Marvel properties that have been translated to the big screen there are few appearances of the furry outlaw prior to 2006.  The time to hoard these comics was 6 months ago and now comics like Marvel Preview 7 and Hulk 271 are nowhere to found.  Since the first GOTG trailer certain comics have tripled in value.  There is still time to find some of these for very little money and even if you don’t collect comics you might be surprised to learn where RR has appeared in the past!

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Quasar 15

index

The RR 1980’s mini is finally seeing the  internet sales action its deserves.  So why no love for this comic especially with a Mignola cover?  Note:  Mignola also did the mini-series.

Contest of Champions 3

hhhh

This odd formula has since become a favorite of writers.  Series like there are usually full of both popular and obscure characters which might be why he’s said to be in this issue.  So far this one is not confirmed.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

She-Hulk 44,45,46

Rocket Raccoon in She-Hulk?!  What’s next, Dazzler?  This isn’t the last time RR appears in a She-Hulk comic either!

Incredible Hulk 272

images

Ok so 271 is a monster, we all know that.  High grade sales are now well over 100 on Ebay and only look to go higher but did you know RR also briefly appears in issue 272!

GOTG ( 2008 ) 1,1 2nd print

imagesguardians-of-the-galaxy-1-2nd-second-print-variant-2008-marvel-comic-book-5085-p[ekm]190x300[ekm]

In 2008 Marvel gave us the greatest incarnation of the GOTG to date.  All this happened on the heels of one of the best cosmic crossovers ever done in comics.  If you go back and read Annihilation and others you will not be disappointed  and it’s no surprise that Marvel has based it’s current cosmic plans around these characters.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Annihilation Conquest 6

hhh

Debate is already raging over this one.  Is it the first appearance of the 2008 GOTG or not?  Whatever the market decides this comic is a key origin issue and leads directly into issue one of the 2008 series.

Annihilators 3 Variant

f

This one is starting to see some heat but is still affordable enough to buy cheap and hold.  It features Rocket’s origin and is a tough variant to track down.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from All sellers on Ebay.

Starlord 1 0f 4

y

This issue is important as it relates to Rocket’s relationship with Groot and other members of the team and their origin.

Exiles 73 ( newsstand only ) Note: I could only find the Direct Edition for a photo so do not use the picture below if you actually go looking for this comic.  Newsstands will NOT say direct edition next to the barcode.

exiles73

There is a significant market for collectors of alternate reality comics.  Exiles was once considered to be one of Marvel’s finest comics.  Though there are few issues which hold any real value there are some yummy nuggets if you know where to look.  Take this issue for example, a rare RR appearance lies within.

Comic Broker Report – April 2013

The Comic Broker’s Report: April 2013

By Topher Seal

As my wife and I prepare our Groot and Rocket Raccoon costumes for this year’s Boston Con we realized that creating giant trees and massive guns out of PVC pipe and cardboard is a hassle.  This lead to a bet.  I believe that Rocket Raccoon is the next big comic character to enjoy mainstream success.  She’s putting her money on Doop.   She may be better than me at Killer Instinct Gold but I win all the bets and she knows it. So with so many awesome comics to speculate on this month I dedicate this article to my wife who personally approved all these selections with the exception of X-Force 116 ( newsstand ) which I see no reason to include.

Iron Man 54 ( First Moondragon )

11544-2407-12834-1-iron-man_super

I realize that not all members of the GOTG will be appearing in the film but with so many of Marvel’s Cosmic properties getting love it’s hard not to want this gem.  What I love about it is that the very next issue is one of the most sought after books on the market. If you want to own all the cosmic first appearances you have to buy the ones that fly under the radar too.  Personally I pass on Avengers 112 ( first Mantis ) and Micronauts 1 ( first Bug ).  I see too many copies of those books to recommend a buy.

Tales of Suspense 75 ( first Agent 13 and Batroc )

tales 75

George St Pierre is having a good month, first he retains his title against the laughable Nick Diaz and then we find out he’s playing the Captain America 2 villain  Batroc formerly of the French Foreign Legion!   I just hope the costume is exactly like the one he wears in the comics! It’s a strange casting and character to use and that’s why I love it!  This issue can still be found relativity cheap but I wouldn’t wait to buy.

Spawn 9 ( Newsstand only )

ispawn

God I cannot believe I am recommending a Spawn book but when Neil Gaiman says Angela is coming to Marvel collectors should pay close attention.  Once upon a time this comic was a hot commodity but like many from the 90’s it cooled off quick. A lot of negativity has been swarming around this character move but when she’s written by Gaiman it could be huge.  There are even rumors that she will be moved to the GOTG team after her introduction in the Age of Ultron!  Here’s the problem though…a ton of these were printed. For now it’s selling well  on the back issue market but how long can that last once the glut arrives?   The good thing is that there’s a newsstand version and it’s not that easy to find.

The Activity 1

I have to mention this Image dud only because it is generating a lot of heat online.  Issue one is selling for big money and the other issues are not far behind.  The only problem?  It’s not a quality read.  Seriously, this comic is poorly written and drawn. I’m not impressed by it and see it’s success as an anomaly in the marketplace.  If you can buy for pennies and flip for big coin then by all means do.  Hold at your own risk if you buy high, ( this book gets no picture because frankly it doesn’t deserve the time  and effort to track one down )

Adventures into Fear 13 ( First Nexus of all Realities )

fear

Savage Tales 1 ( First Ellen Brandt )

tales 1

Unless you are a fan of Man-Thing then you likely don’t know who Ellen Brandt is.  She’s been cast in the new Iron Man 3 film and is directly responsible for creating Man-Thing while trying to replicate the Super Soldier Serum.  Instead she helps create the Man-Thing,  guardian of the Nexus of Realities!  If you don’t know what that is I suggest you start with the issue above!  How Brandt will fit into the film is anyone’s guess but she’s connected to A.I.M. which will play a roll  and she also has connections to Doctor Strange who is going to be part of Marvel’s future film Phases!

Tales of Suspense 78 ( First A.I.M. )

The Incredible Hulk 272 ( Rocket Raccoon  appearance )

hulk 272

Recently I have beaten the importance of RR to death but here’s one more nugget for those who see Disney’s marketing potential for a wise cracking Raccoon with big guns.  Just try and remember how few appearance of him there are prior to the Annihilation events.  We all know that his first color appearance is in issue 271 but he also appears in flashback in the very next book!

Strange Tales 144

Actor Maximiliano Hernandez appeared as Agent Sitwell in the Marvel Studios shorts “The Consultant” and “Item 47.” With no Agent Coulson around Sitwell will be reprising his roll in Captain America 2.  Unlike Coulson who’s first appearance could be in Iron Man 2: Agents of Shield, Battle Scars 1 or 6, Sitwell’s first appearance is clearly defined.  Buy low and hold friends.

Amazing Spider-Man Annual 5 ( First Peter Parker’s Parents )

sr There is a 2nd Print ( Stridex Ad on Back cover )

If you have seen the most recent film then you know that Peter’s Father was the focal point of the after credit sequence.  Could this plot point lead to major implications down the line?  Who knows but that shouldn’t stop you from tracking down this forgotten annual ( especially the rare 2nd print! )

Fantastic Four 206 ( First Nova Corps )

four

Of all the cosmic characters I want to see on film Nova is probably 11th on the list right behind Cosmo the Dog.  Whether he or his corps are utilized in the upcoming film remains a mystery but as usual it doesn’t hurt to own an undervalued Bronze Age beauty!

The Defenders 27,28 ( First Starhawk )

13911-2569-15579-1-defenders-the_superDefenders_Vol_1_28

Will Stahawk play a role in Marvel’s GOTG?  Even if he doesn’t these books are great reads and can be found for next to nothing at most comic shops with a comprehensive back issue section.

The Sword that killed Damian Wayne

Damian Wayne’s recent death is a tragedy and it’s not because another Robin has been slain.  DC received a lot of mainstream press for the death and while that may have generated sales I don’t see it a wise long term strategy.  Yes the character can always be brought back but for now readers have lost one of the few bright spots in the entire DCU.  Anyone who reads these speculative articles knows how I feel about DC’s reboot and the mess it has created in terms of continuity.  I assure you that fans of Damian Wayne and Batman in general will feel the negative effects of killing off such a wonderfully crafted comic book youth.

Since it has been revealed that Damian was killed with a sword that has deep ties to the Wayne family the hunt has been on for the sword’s first appearance.  Grant Morrison revealed that the sword appears throughout DC’s Shadow of the Bat, specifically the issues from the 90’s.  Upon hearing this I pulled out the long box and read every issue.  The only swords I found are a cutlass used by ancestors of Bruce and the Sword of Dumas which looks similar but is NOT the sword in question.  Anyone care to find it?  Tweet me @Larfleeze and receive a prize if you are correct!

The new Breaking the 4th Wall Podcast here on InvestComics will have the Joe Harris interview! Be sure to check that out!

One consistency you will find these days here on InvestComics and in the Marvel Comics world these days can be summed up in 4 words; Guardians of the Galaxy. This week Marvel begins their quest to shove this team down our throats until the movie comes out in 2014. Although it may seem like a long time from now; hell we’re into the third month of 2013 already! It comes quick and the word quick should be in your collector vocabulary when it comes to any of these characters destined to appear in the movie. Marvel’s “primer” if you will comes out this week by the name Guardians of the Galaxy #0.1. With creators Brian Michael Bendis and Steve McNiven attached to this project, it’s very safe to assume here that there will be quick sellouts here with demand in the aftermarket. Although Marvel pulled out some heavyweights for this book, is the appearance of Iron Man in this book a little bit of an uncertainty factor? At least it’s not Wolverine!

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=228]

The team within these pages and the movie for the most part are still out there to be had as far as the collectors market is concerned. With that said, the longer you wait, well the harder it’ll be to get your bid in. Prices will be going up and up fans, no slowing down here…..for now. Bad publicly, delays, budget woes, and a bad trailer could change things very quick to the downside. Be wary here. Be a smart investor, know your market. Pay attention.

The following characters appearing in the new comic (and movie, not all characters, but we still don’t really know) are still readily available for the investor right now at some decent (affordable) pricing. At the forefront of your search should be Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon. Star-Lord (as mentioned numerous times already on InvestComics) first appeared in Marvel Preview Presents #4 (1976). There are only 29 of these comics graded by CGC right now. Three of which sit in the 9.8 slot. Do you really need more motivation here? Okay here’s some more for you. Rocket Raccoon first appeared in Marvel Preview Presents #7 (1976). There are an astounding 12 graded copies of this book out there. Highest grade is a 9.6 and only one sits there. Next grade sits at 9.2 with two sitting there. Get the drift here? Then you have Gamora and Drax. Both of these characters have a big similarity. That would be Mr. Jim Starlin. Gamora first appeared in Strange Tales #180 (1975) and Drax debuted in Iron Man #55 (1975) both are written and penciled by Jim. Now we all know that if you are a comic collector, one must own the first appearance of what is to become the modern day Darth Vader (Thanos) in Iron Man #55, which commands some big bucks in the aftermarket, but still a very strong buy at the high prices. Looking at the Strange Tales #180 though we see a trend like the previously mentioned, excluding the Iran Man book. Only 79 of these comics are graded. Ten hold the 9.8 position. Then we have Groot. Tales to Astonish #13 (1960) is the first look at Groot. Okay only 28 graded here. Highest grades available are one at 9.4 and one at the 9.2 position. Here’s the kicker with this comic. A debut from Groot and only 28 total graded?? This comic is a golden egg ready to explode IF Groot somehow makes it to the big screen and kicks ass. Not because he’s “groot”, because it’s a first appearance drawn by legend Jack “the King” Kirby. Nuff said. Well one more thing. Jim Starlin is one of the main reasons if not THE reason the Marvel cosmo’s being as consistent and brilliant as it is. Don’t kid yourself. He’s the Frank Miller Batman of the Marvel Cosmic Universe. Now, nuff said.

DC Comics tells fans that Flash #17 will introduce us to one of Flash’s greatest foes! Great! The Flash rogue gallery needs a kick in the ass! The Savage Hawkman #17 re-introduces the Shadow Thief into the New 52 Universe. The Shadow Thief first appeared in The Brave and the Bold #36 (1961). This issue comes with a Joe Kubert cover. Nice!

Uncanny Avengers #4 has Omega Skull in it. Is this the first appearance? Not sure, but wanted to throw it out there!

And another Uncanny book to look forward to this week with the word “skull” in it is Uncanny Skullkickers #1. Check out these books as well; Five Weapons #1 (Image), Amalas Blade #0 (Dark Horse), and Professor Frink Fantastic Science Fictions #1 (Bongo).

See you next week, invest wisely.

Comic Broker Report – January 2013

The Comic Book Broker’s Report ( January )

By Topher Seal

The Guardian of the Galaxy have a long history.  Since their first incarnation in Marvel Super-Heroes  they have appeared in many titles and stared in their own series. But when Marvel announced the production of a feature film even the most die hard Starlord fans must have been surprised.  Thankfully Marvel has a plan and it seems to center around Thanos-Marvel’s biggest, baddest cosmic despot.  We can also be thankful that the team will be based on Dan Abnett’s acclaimed series which followed the Annihilation crossover event.

It’s time now to give those of us who collect comic books the run down on the Guardians of The Galaxy.  You may not be the only one wondering how a super tree and a talking raccoon with big guns will translate to screen but before they do look for these comics in high grade.  Some will be worth flipping for fast cash right before the film hits while others should be stored neatly in your vault.

Marvel Super-Heroes 18 & Astonishing Tales 29

The cosmic defenders first appeared here and were later reprinted in Astonishing Tales 29.  Both are selling well beyond their true value, especially Heroes 18.  I have seen internet sales over 200 for the issue in VF.  The comic will continue to generate high sales even after the film comes out but A bomb in theaters will reduce the value of both.

marvel super heroes 18   astonishing 29

Bronze Age books can be a very lucrative investment.  Some of the most renown creators worked for Marvel and on comics featuring the Guardians.  Collectors will eventually be searching for more and more GOTG appearances so I suggest you start looking now.  Also a savvy collector should remember that there were pricing and regional variants for many comics from this era.

Marvel Presents 3-12 / The Avengers 167,168,170,173,177,181 / The Defenders 26-29 / Marvel Two In One 5,61,69 / Contest of Champions 3 / Marvel Team up 86 / Giant Size Defenders 5 / Thor Annual 6 etc.

Subsequent decades were not kind to the Guardians.  Issues from Volume 1 hold little to no value unless you own a complete set.  There are exceptions though.  There are some Mark Jeweler variants of early issues, issues 25, 50 have newsstand variants and the last five issues had low print runs making them quite rare!  And you could buy these-

Moving on to the current team ( which the film will be based on )

Annihilation Conquest 6

I have mentioned this comic before and I say again, this comic is primed to explode!  Issue 6 of this series is basically the first appearance of the new team.

357570-19607-127584-1-annihilation-conque_super

This series ran for 25 issues.  Issue 1 is hot in high grade ( there is a 2nd print variant as well ) and the final issue features Thanos on the cover but it too has a variant worth purchasing.

guardians vol 2 1  guardians vol 2 25

As a bonus here are some truly rare and collectible GOTG comics!

These are my favorite UK Guardians of the Galaxy issues.  Good luck finding them in the states though!

First appearances of characters known to be in the film have already seen significant value increases.
