InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 4/30/14

NOTE: Please excuse the functionity and look of the website at the moment. There is a lot going on behind the scenes right now and it’s messing with a lot of the site right now. Thank you for your patience as we work through this.

Amazing Spider-Man will relaunch this upcoming week with Amazing Spider-Man (2014 3rd Series) #1. The relaunch of this third SpideyHP43014_Covers (6) series is due to the lack of success the previous two series’ have had. With 100% sarcasm attached to the previous comment, Marvel’s relaunch here is their way to cash in on Sony’s new Spidey movie coming out this week…..and of course grab as much money from the collector pockets as possible too. Nothing wrong with a company wanting to make money, but watering down things quite a bit aren’t we with 16 variants? But money to be made nonetheless! So what should you do? Stick with the usual rules. Get the variants with the best ratio. Get the variants signed and graded. That’s it. Or get a variant you really dig, get that signed and graded. Either sit on it for your own love of it or sell it very quick. The Amazing Spider-Man #1 variant craze is going to be short lived.

More variant cover madness hits with Rai (2014 Valiant) #1. At last count with this one there are 10. So between the Amazing Spider-Man #1 and Rai #1 there are 26 variants in total. That’s 2 comics, and 26 variants. Wow. Anyway, Check out Rai’s first appearance in his self-titled book from 1992. Also brought to you by Valiant. And the total number of variants for Rai in 1992? Zero.

HP43014_Covers (5)There are 2 DC Comics to check out this week. First one, the more important one too is Adventures of Superman (2013) 2nd Series #12. An introduction of an all new character named Demolisher. Introduction of new characters are always a 100% pickup on new comic book day. Know this. The other DC Comic; Flash (2011) Annual #3 will reintroduce Wally West into the New 52 realm. Aftermarket will take more to the Demolisher intro in the long run IF the character is a recurring one.

Sold out number ones to keep your eye on this Wednesday. Dream Police (2014 Image) #1, written by J. Michael Straczynski. Southern Bastards (2014) #1 with the team of Jason squared; Jason Aaron and Jason Latour.  V-Wars (2014) #1 (IDW Publishing) has a Kevin Eastman variant. Two comics from Red 5 have the sold out sign at the distributor; Bad Dreams (2014) #1 and Haunted (2014 Red 5) #1.

And finally, Uncanny Avengers (2012 Marvel Now) Annual #1 will have the first look at a new team. The Avengers of the Supernatural. Hey, I don’t make this stuff up, I report on it.

Crime, changelings, nightwalkers, and police detectives that uncover more than they bargained for

Join Dream Police Detectives Joe Thursday and Frank Stanford as they patrol the dreamscape in DREAM POLICE, written by J. Michael Straczynski (TEN GRAND, PROTECTORS, INC.) with art by Sid Kotian.
Joe and Frank have been partners for as long as they can remember, patrolling the alternate universe of dreams, nightmares, and the great void beyond, an alternate but very real dimension of changelings, echoes, wisps, ethers, and nightwalkers, those that died in their sleep and wander the dreamscape forever.
The Dream Police have seen it all. But when Frank steps away and disappears… and the woman who returns says she’s Joe’s partner, that she’s always been Joe’s partner… he begins a journey into the unknown that will shake the dreaming down to its very foundation.
While growing up, Straczynski moved 20 times by the time he was 17. This lack of continuity as a child led him to imagine his own “hometown,” a community that he patched together with different memories from all the different places he’d tried to settle, and visited only in his dreams. “I’ve been fascinated with the idea that the dreamscape is a real place, stitched together from echoes of the physical world, where we go to find some measure of relief, or adventure, or understanding,” said Straczynski. “If that’s the case, then there has to be some means of providing order and protecting dreamers from danger… which led me to the notion of the Dream Police.”
DREAM POLICE is more than just a crime series. Each issue does world building and allows readers to get to know more than just the police that inhabit the dream community. “The book delves into the other characters who live in the dreamscape,” said Straczynski. “The architects (who design environments on the fly as needed by dreamers), changeling and echoes (who play the parts of people we know), nightmares (figures both frightening and deeply tragic) and others who serve a higher power.”
The first issue of DREAM POLICE arrives in stores on 4/30 and will be available for $2.99. Cover A (by Sid Kotian & Bill Farmer) can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code: FEB140494. Cover B (by Renae Deliz & Ray Dillon) can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code: FEB140495.

No worries though, the Invest Pub will continue to crank out books in the coming year. Also be prepared for something very special coming in October 2014 from the house of leaders; InvestComics Publications.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 1/1/13

DC Vertigo will have a huge hit on their hands this week. Be sure to be on top of Dead Boy Detectives (2013) #1. This Sandman spin off will have the loyalist flocking to the shelves for this one. Not only will the Sandman faithful be a part of the sellout here, but the curious readers and collectors. The Cliff Chiang variant is already sold out and the regular addition is probably on its way to a second print. Want to get in on the ground floor with this hit book? How about looking for a Sandman #25 from 1991. Some dude named Neil Gaiman was on the book at the time, but this comic holds the first appearance of Dead Boy Detectives. So…….what are you waiting for?

[scrollGallery id=327]

Batman The Dark Knight (2011 2nd Series) #26 will be a (mostly) silent book. No reading required here, just lots of pictures. Think of this as the Batman Playboy issue. Although not a new inventive idea by any means, there have been comics with no words in them. In recent history however, one comic seems to stand out above the rest. In 1984 (wait this is 29 years ago! Recent history??) writer Larry Hama had the comic book hobby enthusiast pining for the release of G.I. Joe The Real American Hero each month. With issue number 21 THE silent issue hit. Not only was it a big commercial success, but the comic also featured the first appearance of Storm Shadow. This particular book commands some nice bucks as a graded 9.8 or even a 9.6. Will this silent (almost silent) Batman comic ever be a collectors item? Maybe, maybe not who knows? But it sure is fun reminiscing about that awesome G.I. Joe comic!

If you’re a frequent flyer around here you will know that InvestComics loves covering the variants. This week there will be THE mother of all variants. A $300 Superman Unchained (2013 DC) #5 Jim Lee incentive sketch cover. This beauty falls in the category of; if you got it, spend it because you’ll make your money back three times easily if the comic is graded a 9.8 and signed by Jim Lee. Can the same be said for the very attractive (and sold out!) Twilight Zone (2014 Dynamite) #1? The variants are fetching $100 (25 exist), $75 (50 exist), and $20. Follow the same guidelines as the aforementioned when you do acquire the $100 comic. But of course get the signature of J. Michael Straczynski on this one! So wait a sec here, a 25 copy variant on a sold out comic across the board, signed by J. Michael Straczynski, and a 9.8 grade? Look to triple or quadruple your take back here. This will actually be as big as the Jim Lee Variant as far as aftermarket percentage goes.

There are some other sold out variants to check out this week; like Legenderry A Steampunk Adventure (2014) #1, Revelations (2014) #1, and Lil Ernie (2014) #1.

Dark Horse Comics brings back an old 1940’s hero in Captain Midnight 1 For $1 (2014) #1. This $1 comic will reintroduce Captain Midnight to the modern day. It’s almost sold out, and rightly so! For a buck? If you’re in the market for a Golden Age book, you can check out the first appearance of Cap Midnight in The Funnies #57 (1941). A couple of sold out number one issues to keep an eye on for on new comic book day; From the amazing Michael Linsner comes Sin Boldly (2013 Image) #1, and from Dark Horse Juice Squeezers (2014 Dark Horse) #1.

There are two number one comics coming that are running at a very slow pace out of the gate sales wise. Bad Blood (2013) #1 and Baltimore Chapel of Bones (2013) #1. Maybe they’ll pick up….

And finally, a couple of hot comics with new creators on board to check out. Guardians of the Galaxy (2013 3rd Series) #10 features the awesome artistry of Kevin Maguire and Aquaman (2011 5th Series) #26 features new writer Jeff Parker.

Invest wisely,

Jay Katz

New Joe’s Comics title from Image sells out

The flagship issue of the new Joe’s Comics line, TEN GRAND #1 by J. Michael Straczynski and Ben Templesmith, sold out the same week as its release, Image Comics has announced that it will go back to press for a second printing that will be in stores on June 5.

A supernatural romance crossed with hardboiled crime, TEN GRAND tells the story of Joe Fitzgerald, a mob enforcer who has sworn to go straight — only to be left for dead during his final hit, an incident that leaves his fiancée dead. Joe gets a second chance when an angelic being revives him to be a hitman for mysterious, spiritual forces, with the reward being that he gets to spend five minutes with his beloved Laura every time he’s killed in his new “job.”

TEN GRAND ushered in the return of Joe’s Comics and was greeted with critical acclaim:

“Straczynski and Templesmith have proven to be a perfect match for a series like this one, and readers should expect great things from the upcoming installments.” – Bloody Disgusting

“Two masters team up for a blaze through hell and back, giving a fresh new spin to a familiar concept.” – Behind the Panels

Ten Grand is a fantastic fusion of supernatural, crime noir/PI, and love stories that make for an excellent read. JMS has crafted a story that feels familiar yet goes off in a new direction. Templesmith’s art pulls off the story’s feeling of despair splendidly.  If you were left wanting more stories like Hellblazer, this is definitely one for you.” – Comic Book Therapy

The June 5 second printing of TEN GRAND #1 can be pre-ordered now with the Diamond Comics code MAR138353.

InvestComics HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=249]

With a slightly heavy number one issue week, there are a few that call for one’s attention. If you sleep on them, they will sellout and you’ll be left pondering what if? Well maybe not that dramatic, but you will be saying something like ‘why didn’t I listen to InvestComics?!’ One comic that heeds your calling is called Movement (2013 DC) #1. Here’s the scoop on this comic. This book includes the government, revolt, greed, corruptness and super-humans. Yes it’s going to be a super ride indeed. The kicker here as to why it will be a story like no other is quite simple. Gail Simone is writing it. This alone is enough to not only make it an interesting read, but a probable sellout will occur. Get your copies early.

The second comic to look for this Wednesday has to be Ten Grand (2013 Image) #1. Much like the aforementioned, this comic has creative star power as well. Writer J. Michael Straczynski along with artist Ben Templesmith bring us a story of love and death, literally. This book will indeed sellout folks, do not miss it. If you procrastinate you will be waiting a few weeks for a second print to read while you pay a Marvel Super Special #32possible premium in the aftermarket for the first print. Don’t say InvestComics didn’t give you a heads up on this one.

There is an amazing thing happening this Wednesday according to Ape Entertainment. It actually took 44 years to happen. Sesame Street will be a comic book for the first time ever! Hard to fathom isn’t it? While to claim to be a “first” does hold water, it really isn’t the first time the gang has appeared in a comic book related atmosphere. Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Kermit, Miss Piggy, and a host of others first appeared in Marvel Comics’ Marvel Super Special #32 (1984). It was a magazine, not a comic, but printed by a comic company. So technically they appeared in a mag first, it was in fact reprinted in early 1985 in comic book form though. There is a fabulous reason why a collector should have this in their stash too. Ready? Legend Jim Starlin was the writer on this comic. Yes, THAT Jim Starlin. So does Ape Entertainment have a true claim here of a first? Well yes and no. It’s the first Sesame Street titled comic book ever, but the characters have appeared in the pages of Marvel already individually. Kudos to Ape Entertainment for getting the first Sesame title out though!

Black Bat (2013 Dynamite) #1 is based on the 1930’s hero. The story from back in the 1930’s says that Batman and Black Bat were so similar that lawsuits started flying, but quickly settled down, thus creating a happy world for both characters to co-exist. I wonder who came out ahead. Anyways, check out the new take on the Black Bat this week. Who knows maybe we’ll get a Tim Burton Black Bat movie one day.

Previously mentioned in a recent InvestComics Hot Picks, Mister X was a big deal back in the early 80’s. The number one issue called for a nice premium in the aftermarket. These days are a bit different though for Mister X in the back issue bins. However, with the efforts put forth in today’s climate of trying to get that next movie deal, one never knows when a new beginning may if ever hit it big again. So with that said, check out Mister X Eviction (2013 Dark Horse) #1 this week and make your own call on whether THIS is the time again for Mister X. His first appearance came from Vortex comics in Mister X #1 (1984).

Some other comics to be on your watch list this week are Suicide Risk (2013 Boom) #1, Victories (2013 Dark Horse) 2nd Series #1, Shadowman (2012 4th Series) #0, and Cyborg 009 Chapter 000 (2013 Archaia) #0. Note: Cyborg 009 first appeared in Cyborg 009 Vol. 1 (2003).

With the Iron Man 3 movie coming out next week, what better time than now to tell a NEW secret origin of Tony Stark with Iron Man (2012 5th Series) #9. A bit strange how Marvel works sometimes. Sticking to topic here, Thanos Rising (2013) #2 continues the awesomeness of Thanos’ origin. (Iron Man #55, buy it, still not too late! InvestComics had this comic as a buy in its very first issue of the InvestComics magazine more than 6 years ago and continued for years telling investors to buy this comic. Hope you listened.). Age of Ultron (2013 Marvel) #7 continues on the path of creating a new Marvel Universe, but the cover strikes similarities to Secret Wars #1 doesn’t it? Well so many covers do these days, but just sharing a thought about the cover. Scroll through the Hot Picks covers and see a side by side.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to sign up to the InvestComics Newsletter. You’ll become instantly cooler. True story.

See you next week, invest wisely.

InvestComics Comic Hot Picks 9-23-09

Many Hot Picks coming at you this week. So get ready to sift through some back issue bins as you pick up your new comics this week.

marvelspotlight32_firstspiderwoman1977.gifSpider-Woman # 1
The highly successful team of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev team up to bring an all new ongoing. Yes, you’re probably saying ‘how many failed attempts will we go for with this character?’ Marvel has a knack for trying to revive certain characters over and over, but it seems that if you get a good writer on a book these days, you’ll have success. Iron Fist seems to fit this bill so does Ms. Marvel and Deathlok will fit this bill as well when his ongoing comes out. Comic collectors are an extremely smart bunch these days and are not going to be fooled by pretty pictures anymore. There has to be a deep substance to go along with the awesome display of artwork that is hitting every Wednesday. So when you’re checking out the awesomeness of the new Spider-Woman book, check out the awesomeness of Marvel Spotlight #32. $30 will get you this first appearance of Jessica Drew from 1977. This is a Bronze age comic that is
waiting to explode. The new Spider-Woman book coming out will be a sell out and collectors will take note to try and find the first appearance. Marvel Spotlight #32 is a buy all the way here, collectors, you’ll be left on the outside looking in if you don’t pick this one up.

Dark Reign Vol 1: Made Men  – Here we have one of those comics with a plethora of characters that need some attention. Find these first appearance if you will……Spymaster has 3 different first appearances. His very first appearance would be Iron Man Vol 1 #33. An easy $35 will score you this one. Then you have Spymaster 2 in Iron Man Vol 1 #254 ($3) with a great Santa Claus cover! The latest Spymaster comes out of Ironman Inevitable from 2006 (cover price). This would be the first Sinclair Abbot Spymaster. The Enforcer makes his first appearance in Ghost Rider Vol 1 #22 ($7). This is a Bronze age Jack (King) Kirby cover! Then you have Jack O’ Lantern’s first appearance in Machine Man #19, penciled by Steve Ditko and a cover by Frank Miller. Great buy here for only $18. Last but not least, Attuma first appears in Fantastic Four #33. This comic will cost you about $400. So there you go, a lot of characters in this book with a lot of hunting for you.

theweb1.gifarchieandfriends107katykeenestory2007theweb.gifWeb # 1

A few weeks ago, InvestComics jumped the gun again! Man this place is eager! Anyway, here is the original weekly Hot Pick from a 8-19-09:

The Red Circle: The Web # 1  This is another installment of J. Michael Straczynski  returning some old heroes to the DC mix. This hero like last weeks Hangman have appeared in many Archie comics as well as DC’s Imprint Impact. Although this really isn’t  J. Michael Straczynski return to DC (see Hot Picks Week Of 8-5-09 for more of an explanation on the ‘return’ of Mikey to DC) The Web will be an interesting comic book to check out.  With J.M. at the helm on these books it’s easy to say it should be worth a look from anyone that is a collector. Looks like it’ll probably be another sleeper for DC. So if you would like to look for the last time The Web made an appearance in an Archie era comic look no further than Archie and Friends # 107 and look for the Katy Keene Story within the comic. There you will find hero The Web. DC’s Imprint The Web with Impact isn’t really worth a look because they changed the Web hero into a team.

supermansecretorigin1.gifSuperman: Secret Origin # 1  Gary Frank and Geoff Johns get together again
to crank out the next hottest series for DC. The Superman origin has had many
different takes over the years, but never with a talent or respect since John
Byrne’s Man of Steel mini from 1986 has a Superman origin story garnished so
much attention. Geoff Johns and Gary Frank will take Superman to new heights
with this one.

uncannyxmen515.gifUncanny X-Men # 515
Marvel says ‘the effects of Utopia are felt here’ and it looks like someone from the original Mutant pack is leaving on a jet plane. Well maybe on foot, maybe by subway, maybe by boat or maybe you should just stay put and read it!

Here are some other Hot comics coming at you this Wednesday……

Beautful Creatures # 1  This one might be a sleeper….

BONUS: Here are some very cool Superhero Squad Variants coming out this week!

installment of J. Michael Straczynski  returning some old heroes to the DC mix. This hero like last weeks Hangman have appeared in many Archie comics as well as DC’s Imprint Impact. Although this really isn’t  J. Michael Straczynski return to DC (see Hot Picks Week Of 8-5-09 for more of an explanation on the ‘return’ of Mikey to DC)

Archie Comics #600  It’s a great Archie Comics week here at InvestComics. In what is sure to be the biggest Archie Comics story ever…..Archie is now 68 years old and is finally popping the question to Veronica. Why Veronica and not Betty?? Who knows, but this is a monumental comic should be on your radar this week. Betty did in fact appear first in Archie’s world, but he went with the newer chick Veronica who came in 4 issues later. Even 68 year old men could be dogs too! So do you want to be a part of history? Pick this comic up then! You want more you say? Okay how about Pep Comics # 22? That’s Archie; Jughead & Betty’s first appearance’s coming in at $25,000. Veronica shows up in Pep Comics # 26. This comic will cost only $4000. Oh, now it makes sense, Veronica really isn’t the money grubber. Good start Archie!
daysmissing1writerphilhesterartfrazerirvingcoverlimitto2500.gifDays Missing #1  Writer Phil Hester and artist Frazer Irving bring this very attractive comic this week. A very interesting storyline with an extremely limited Variant cover limited to only 2500 from Frazer makes this one a must get.
batgirl_1.gifBlackest Night: Superman #1  The greatest Green Lantern story ever told spills to a number one Superman comic. Get this and
right before the 3rd print hits, sell it.
Batgirl #1  Where is Bruce? Who cares? Batgirl is here! With Batman firing up some nice sales numbers, look for this Bat title
to do the same. This won’t stay hot for a long sustained time so gauge your market with this one.
Here are some other Comics to check out this Wednesday

jmichaelstraczynskisfirstcomicworkteentitansspotlight13_5dolls.gif The Red Circle: The Hangman #1 (One Shot)
The DC solicit reads something like this ‘J. Michael Straczynski dives into the DC Universe at last.’ Well if DC was paying attention they would have realized that this is not the first time he has jumped into the pool. Although DC makes it seem like he hasn’t been here before, the fact is he has. 1987 was
the year J.M. made his debut with the DC Universe, not 2009. A book by the title of Teen Titans Spotlight #13 is not only his first DC work but his first comic book work. Grab this little nugget for only $5. Great buy and hold here.

warmachine8.gifgiantsizedcreaturesfeaturibgwerewolf1_1stapptigra_30dolls.gifmarvelteamup951stmockingbird_3dolls.gifWar Machine #8  Guest staring a few Marvel characters in this one. We’ll focus on only 2 of them. Get Giant Sized Creatures Featuring Werewolf #1 for the first Tigra coming in at only $30. Not a bad price for a comic that is 35 years old. Marvel Team Up #95 is the first Mockingbird which comes in at only $3.

The Marvels Project #1  Witness the origin of
the Marvel Universe brought to you by the creators who killed Captain America
(he’s back now) Steve Epting and Ed Brubaker. Do yourself a favor here and grab a variant or variants because they will be going for a premium for a while. Get them graded to make an absolute killing in return funds. A 9.8 or higher here will command some nice cash.

Batman & Robin #3  Red hot series continues
and shows no signs of slowing down.
