DC’s New Age Of Heroes continues this week with a new debut; Sideways #1. This particular character, as every single “New Age Hero” from this line, resembles yet another Marvel character. Sideways looks strikingly similar to Spider-Man. NOT saying this comic is DC’s Spider-Man comic and that Derek James will be bitten by a sideways insect, just looking at the surface here. Breathe fanboys, breathe. The lead character is a high schooler though! The DC solicit says “….with that much power comes great liability….”. A New York City backdrop on the cover…hmmm…um okay. The premise (powers) of leaping from dimension to dimension at will creates the excitement that we won’t be sitting in one place too long as a reader, which is always a good thing. Dan DiDio and Justin Jordan write, Kenneth Rocafort pencils. We’re so on board with this comic, so is our 10-year-old YouTube comic book reviewer Jason Katz.
New Super-Man And The Justice League Of China #20 will start off a new story line “Seas of Change” and will debut a new character.
‘Hacked” part on in Suicide Squad #35. The villain known as Hack returns. First appeared in Suicide Squad #2 (2016).
Things are looking very bleak on the cover of Titans #20. Check out “Titans Apart” part one by Dan Abnett and Paul Pelletier.

Promethea makes her DC Comics Universe debut in Justice League Of America #24 this Wednesday. Formally an America’s Best Comics creation from Alan Moore. It was quite amusing reading all of the fanboy/nerd comments when DC showed off the cover art as it was revealed that Promethea was arriving into the fold of the DCU. Comic book fans could care less as life went on for them, but it was the “others” who were severally distraught over learning of DC’s move here. Well, Alan Moore was probably irked, so the fanboy/nerd had to tag along and act accordingly to try and fit in. Seriously, calm down. It’s DC’s property and they can feel fit to do whatever the heck they want with it. It’s comic books, not the Declaration of Independence. Relax. That all said, if you’re in the market for a good read, check out the original 32 issue series from 1999. Promethea #1 is the first appearance. Last sold on Ebay for about $15.
General Thrawn of Star Wars makes his Marvel Universe debut this week in Star Wars Thrawn #1. We think. Maybe he appeared in some other Marvel Star Wars book we’re not aware of. Maybe in the background on some monitor or a cell phone photo, who knows? These speculators are so desperate to  be the first to correct us or find that first appearance on a cereal box on some panel, so that’s why we’re leaving the door ajar a bit asking if this is indeed his Marvel Comics debut. Anyway, we can tell you that General Thrawn first appeared in a Star Wars Galaxy Magazine #5 in 1995 (Topps Comics). His first “comic book” appearance came in Star Wars: Heir To The Empire #1 (1995) from Dark Horse Comics. If you feel compelled to not recognize any of that banter as the first appearance, then this book here is the first Marvel Universe appearance. If that really means anything at all really. What really matters though are creators Jody Houser and Luke Ross bringing some great story telling.
Ms. Marvel #27, the debut of the Ms. Marvels team? No seriously, take a look.
In the “just saying” department, the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl solicits are the most pretentious, annoying, try-to-hard to sell a comic, drub you can read every month. Always a long diatribe, explaining and trying to be quirky. Stop already. Just sell the book without the added nonsense, sheesh. Okay, just saying rant over. Onward we go….

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks; Indie comics do not always show up on Ebay right way. Please check back on a regular basis, some of the smaller print indie books usually list after new comic book release day or a few days after.
What a long fun ride its’ been for Robert Kirkman’s Invincible character. Making his cameo in Noble Causes Family Secrets #3 (2002) and then his first full appearance in Invincible #1 (2003). A fifteen-year run is an amazing feat. Kudos to Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley and the Image Comics/Skybound team as Invincible #144 will be the last issue this Wednesday. Now onto the small screen or the big screen, animated or live action, we’ll see.
Kick-Ass #1 begins anew once again. Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. are back at the helm to bring readers the mayhem they come to expect. A new Kick-Ass vigilante makes their debut, be sure to check out who it is. Is it someone we may know already or is it someone completely new. Either way, we can’t wait to see and hear Hit-Girl kick some booty!
AfterShock Comics next hit book; Cold War #1. Creators Christopher Sebela and Hayden Sherman.

After you spend your 25 cents and getall caught up, check out Charismagic Vol 3 #1 from Vince Hernandez and Harvey Tolibao (Mr. Tolibao, this is spelled correctly).
Death Of Love #1 (Image Comics); creators Justin Jordan, Donal Delay and Omar Estevez.
Stabbity Bunny #1 proved to be a big sell out as we informed you. Now Scout Comics will bring their follow-up; Stabbity Bunny #2. This issue will sell out just like the first did. Better get your hands on one before you’re stuck with a second print instead.
Athena Voltaire #1 (Action Lab); creators Steve Bryant and Ismeal Canales. Also, from Danger Zone come two awesomely crazy books; Baby Badass #1. This craziness is brought to you by D.E. Schrader and Tim Larsen. This looks like a fun ride. And Black Betty #1 from Shawn Gabborin and Michela Da Sacco.

Empress #1 – This “Saga” like comic from Mark Millar will be sold out in no time. Watch for this Marvel imprint from Icon to take off. One of the key components to its success will be that it has to be consistent on its release. Millar’s Nemesis, also from Icon, was a semi-success, but lost many fans because of delays. It could have been a bigger book (should have been), but delays will kill things fast. Empress + on time = success.

Star Wars Poe Dameron #1 – Almost every week InvestComics preaches the gospel about Star Wars comics from Marvel. We say to buy them because they are fantastic reads and for the possible first appearance that may explode at any time. This week we have a character from the latest Star Wars movie making their first appearance in a Star Wars comic. What more do you want here? Okay, maybe have your wife/girlfriend or maybe read it with your kid? That would be cool too.

Justice League Darkseid War Special #1 – Darkseid’s daughter, Grail, will be making her indelible mark within the DC universe this Wednesday. DC might be priming her for bigger things to come. Check out the InvestComics Hot Picks #418 for more info on this and about Grail’s first appearance.

Harley Quinn And The Suicide Squad April Fools Special #1 – One of DC’s all time greatest artist will grace us with his presence in this book. Jim Lee will pencil and do the cover art here. What more do you need? Refer back to the new Star Wars comic if you need more answers on that.

Superman #51 – A new story line begins; Super League. Be on the lookout for possible new villains or heroes in this epic Superman crossover event. We’ll probably say “told you so!”

Showcase #75

Click To Buy Now

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates in purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details)

IC 100 Club Pick: Showcase #75 (1968) 7.0. This comic represents the first appearance and origin of Hawk and Dove. Story, cover and interior art from the legendary man himself, Steve Ditko. A 7.0 grade for only $90, with FREE shipping, gets this beauty in your hands. This a must in your collection.

Click on the RED links or the comic cover to buy/bid from all available sellers on Ebay.

Look for writer Mark Millar to turn things upside down with the debut of Empress #1 from Marvel’s imprint Icon. It’s already getting billed as Marvel Comics version of “Saga”. And we all know how Saga turned out. Mark will introduce fans to a whole new sci-fi world. Hollywood LOVES Mark Millar and we wonder if Marvel Studios would ever pick this up and run with it. Who knows? It could happen. Either way, this is an introduction comic in the vein of Saga, one to watch for here! This will be big.

The new Black Panther series makes its debut this week; Black Panther Vol 6 #1. The longest running Black Panther series lasted 62 issues. Many limited series, one shots, and team-up books over the span of six volumes for the character. Will this series ever make past 62 issues? We’ll see. But the first issue here is accompanied by an abundance of variants to choose from. Pointless, and the need for 13 different covers (at last count, probably more) is a bit excessive. The creative team makes for a must get though. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and artist Brian Stelfreeze will bring fans back again and again.

Marvel will introduce a new Star Wars character into their library. Star Wars Poe Dameron #1 will have the first comic book appearance of Poe Dameron. Poe appeared in the latest Star Wars flick and now he makes his way into the funnies. Regular InvestComics readers know how we feel about the Star Wars comics. Buy them all! This one here is so obvious that if you miss it, shame on you! Besides Empress #1, this is the other big Marvel book this week.

Spider-Women Alpha #1 features Silk, Spider-Gwen and Spider-Woman all teaming up. The Stacey Lee variant is sold out.

This week’s Justice League Darkseid War Special #1 will focus on Darkseid’s daughter Grail. A book simmering in the back issue bins on Ebay is Justice League #40 (2015), the first appearance of Darkseid’s daughter Grail. With DC maybe headed towards a Darkseid movie appearance, who’s to say they won’t take a page out of Marvel’s film franchise and include his daughter, a’la Marvel’s Nebula (Thanos). Right now JL #40 might be a gimme at $15….the same price as some worthless variant this week. Maybe getting Justice League #40 instead of a pretty cover makes more sense. Just saying.
There are plenty of DC comic covers by John Romita Jr. to choose from this week. DC is proud to have John Romita Jr. on their side instead of those “other guys”. Some may say or think this is the first time John is playing for the other side, but fans of InvestComics know we’re going to do our research! John Romita Jr. first drew some DC characters back in 1994. Not just “any” characters, he penciled Batman, Robin, Joker, among some others from the DCU. The comic was Batman/Punisher: Deadly Knights. Art by John Romita Jr. and written by Chuck Dixon. John also contributed to the awesome cover. Great comic, great story, Romita Jr.’s first DC work.

While on topic regarding DC’s past history. Bloodlines #1 debuts with writer J.T. Krul and artist Kenneth Marion at the helm. Bloodlines was a huge crossover storyline that took almost 6 months to hammer out back in 1993, spanning from August to December. The very first Bloodlines book was Lobo Annual #1 Bloodlines Outbreak. This comic introduced the Bloodlines Parasites.

Mr. Jim Lee will provide artwork for this week’s winner of the longest comic book title; Harley Quinn And The Suicide Squad April Fools Special #1. Yes, THE Jim Lee will be penciling this comic. The Lee sketch cover is already sold out.

Injustice Gods Among Us Year Five #7 features the first appearance of the NEW Nightwing.
It looks like Superman #51 could possibly introduce some new characters within its major new storyline crossing over all of the Superman titles; Super League Part 1 begins here. Keep an eye out on this series for new characters and villains.
Green Arrow will battle Deathstroke in Green Arrow #51. Fantastic covers from Patrick Zircher (regular cover) and John Romita Jr. (variant).

Grizzly Shark #1 from Image Comics looks interesting. Grizzly Shark first appeared in Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark #1 (2010). This Origin debut comic is written by Robert Kirkman. Ever heard of him? Art from the 2010 and 2016 Shark books; Ryan Ottley.
A new Think Tank series will start this Wednesday; Think Tank #1 (Image Comics). The original series started in 2012; Think Tank #1.

Aaron Lopresti’s Power Cubed #2 (Dark Horse) follows up on the first fantastic issue. Doesn’t that look like Marvel’s Devil Dinosaur on the cover though? Guess any red colored T-Rex will look like Devil dinosaur right? Also coming from Dark Horse this week is Steam Man #1. That comic caters to the steampunk fans.

DC continues the deep origin the Arkham Knight in Batman Arkham Knight Genesis #3.

The Justice League team have new powers and are all “God like”. The new powered Justice League team appears in this weeks Justice League #45.

For those interested, Teen Titans Hunt #1 will focus on the secret origin of the team.

Some of the best reading source material comes from DC’s imprint Vertigo. This week Gail Simone writes Clean Room #1 from Vertigo. There’s not much else to say here, but this will probably be a very good read.

The Invincible title will dare to reboot itself? Check out Invincible #124 as everything in the comic starts from the beginning? Only Robert Kirkman would do this to us. This is probably a fantastic jumping on point too.

An Inhuman stars in his own book this Wednesday. Karnak #1 written by the awesome Warren Ellis. A pick up for sure. Also, Karnak first appears in a book InvestComics has been touting for years now; Fantastic Four #45 (1965). We’re still a bull on this comic.

The number one issue parade continues onward for Marvel Comics this week. Astonishing Ant-Man #1 looks like a decent book, but haven’t we all seen the movie though? And what’s with all the characters on the Mark Brooks cover? Secret Wars Agents Of Atlas #1 will throw a bunch of characters together in hopes you at least like one of them and buy the book.

Speaking of the Inhumans. The new Uncanny Inhumans #1 comic is very iffy. It’s an all new line up; Human Torch? Beast? We’re not really feeling the additions here. The old team is where it’s at. A great creative lineup could sway many readers and collectors alike that are not grasping the initial vibe here. Charles Soule writes and Steve McNiven does the art.

New Star Wars comic; Darth Vader #11. More fantastic Star Wars material from Marvel.

Aside from the obvious success of the Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman has amassed quite the career thus far. This Creator Spotlight will not focus on the Walking Dead comics Robert has done because InvestComics has already covered most of them throughout the years. We’re going to focus on his body of work besides TWD, which is quite impressive to say the least. A young career, but yet so vast.

The InvestComics Wristband Contest At New York Comic Con 2015. #InvestComicsNYCC

Buy a $1 wristband (Below), wear it at the NYCC 2015, find a member of the InvestComics team and you will get to select a graded comic for you to keep.

This October (8th-11th) at the Javits Center in New York, InvestComics fans will seek out a member of the InvestComics team at the New York Comic Con 2015 (wearing their black wristband) in the greatest (and FIRST) comic book website manhunt ever; to win a graded comic book of their choice! Each day of the show will give fans 4 different days to win. Which means one wrist band equals four chances to win. The graded comics are listed below and are yours for the taking, but you’ll have to find us first amidst the drones of NYCC fans walking around!

IC BAND COMIC

Select One Of These Four

Amazing Spider-Man #11 (2015) Signed by Dan Slott. Graded by 9.2. Marvel Animation Variant.

Spawn #16 (1993) Signed by Greg Capullo. Graded 8.5 by.

George Perez’s Sirens #1 (2014) Signed by George Perez and April Hunter. Graded by 9.6.

Outcast #1 (2014) Graded by 9.6

Here’s how you participate: You can purchase your black InvestComics.com wristband at the website www.trendingpopculture.com for $1 each (plus shipping) AND at NYCC, more on that in a bit. Fans can purchase more than one wristband if they’d like. It doesn’t mean if you wear more bands you may find us better, it means you purchase more bands and give them to your friends to seek us out too! Wristbands will also be available at the NYCC for purchase for $1 each. InvestComics has partnered up with a few booths (maybe more, we’ll announce) at the show to carry the wristbands. They will be limited, so get there quickly if you need to purchase any. The booths will be; Comicxposure, Creature Entertainment, Cosmic Times, and Royal Collectables. Walk up to any of these booths and ask to buy a wristband for the InvestComics Manhunt Contest.

***The Comicxposure team says that if a fan purchases an InvestComics wristband at their booth, you will get $5 off any variant!

How to play: The InvestComics team will be at the show all four days; Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Each day the Manhunt will begin at a different time. The coverage space equals anywhere INSIDE the NYCC.

Thursday October 8th: 4:00 PM (35 minutes to find us)

Friday October 9th: 5:00 PM (35 minutes to find us)

Saturday October 10th: 5:00 PM (35 minutes to find us)

Sunday October 11th: 4:00 PM (35 minutes to find us)

Once the clock strikes the particular time, the manhunt to find an InvestComics team member will begin. Each member will be wearing an official InvestComics t-shirt (like the one pictured below). Once a contestant finds a member, show us you are wearing your wristband, we will record the exact time (stop watches set together) and head back to base. We will call ahead to see if any other members are on the way back. If so, we will compare times to see who officially won the right to select their graded comic.

IC Crew

L-R Stan Lee, Jay Katz, Rafael Rosario, Greg Capullo, Taylor

As each Graded comic goes off the board we will send an alert via Social Media as to who won (The winners picture of course) and what comic they selected.

The Rules: As with every contest there must be rules.

  1. If you are caught trailing(following) us before the bell sounds on a particular day, you will be automatically disqualified and ineligible to participate in the contest on any given day(s) left.
  2. Once you choose a graded comic, your picture will be taken and blasted via social media. You cannot under any circumstance change your mind and want a different comic thereafter.
  3. You cannot win more than once. If you bought a band for a friend and they find us, then they get a picture and they can do with the graded comic as they wish (give it to you).
  4. The contest takes place ONLY inside the NYCC. Meaning if the time starts and you find an InvestComics team member outside the boundaries of the NYCC you cannot claim your prize.
  5. A claimant cannot claim their prize inside the press area or right outside of it.
  6. If a graded comic goes unclaimed, it will remain in the mix for a person to choose in the next phase (day). A person will not have an option of taking two comics.
  7. No affiliate or team member of InvestComics is eligible in this contest. This includes any involvement of parties in this contest.

*InvestComics reserves the right to alter the contest in any way from now until the dates of the actual show.

As all of the Creator Spotlights on InvestComics, each and every one of the creators have their own uniqueness. Rob Liefeld stormed into the industry back in 1987 and took the industry by the proverbial ears, starred into its eyes and said “I’m taking over.” So he he did.

He was one of the busiest creators in the industry at one time. The man was churning out comics at a ridiculous rate. That was good for the fans because they couldn’t seem to get enough.

Check out some of Rob Liefeld’s key books in his vast career thus far. Everything from Deadpool to Jada Pinkett Smith. Yes Jada….

Marc Spector, Moon Knight #19 (1990) A solo Rob Liefeld Moon Knight cover with Spider-Man and the Punisher.

New Mutants #98 (1991) Well here it is. The Holy Grail. Only fours years into his professional career, Rob hits on a character that will forever change his career and the Marvel character landscape. The cover alone has been paid respect to so many times throughout the years. Rob Liefeld introduced the world to Deadpool and Marvel had a character for the ages. Not much can be said about this comic and character that hasn’t been said already, but Rob is officially a superstar now.

X-Force #1 (1991) This comic was ridiculously hot back in the early 90’s. Too many copies released prevented it from gaining any substantial aftermarket heat. Rob pencils/inks and cover art. Many collectors these days go after the bagged issue with the Deadpool trading card. Claiming it’s an early appearance of Deadpool. It’s a card. Seriously, it’s a card, not a comic appearance.

Spider-Man Badrock #1 (1997) Liefeld pencils and cover art. Dan Jurgens writes.

Menace #1 (1998) Did you know that Jada Pinkett Smith wrote a comic book? In fact, she wrote two. This one has a variant cover done by Rob. Only one available on Ebay as you read this.

Here’s the latest installment of long lost since forgotten comic books. Many of these comics are simply not spoken of anymore and SOME of these have no monetary value in the speculative market, but do have a place in our hearts. Great stories and amazing creative talents accompany most of these books. Into the abyss these comics have gone, but here they are once again. Buy them, read them, they’re fun.

Click the RED links or comic cover to buy/bid on the books in this article.

Star Brand #1 (1986) Here’s a series that went no where fast. So fast in fact that issue number 19 was the last issue ; “number 19 in a 19 issue limited series.” Really?? Okay. This happened with almost all of the other titles as well when it came to Marvel’s New Universe imprint. Most  say “#32 of a 32 issue Limited Series.” on the top of the book. No lie, true story.

But even the creative firepower couldn’t save this series from its ultimate demise. John Romita Jr. does most of the art and a cover or two for about the first seven issues. Writer Roy Thomas on issue number seven, Keith Giffen art in issue number 9 with a Bob Wiacek cover, issue number ten features Mark Bagley Pencils, and then legend John Byrne takes over art and writing duties as of issue number eleven. And good luck finding that scarce last issue too.

Union Jack #1 (1998) Union Jack’s first solo series comic. Writer/artist and cover all by John Cassaday. When will a UK based character break out anyway? It will happen eventually (as InvestComics has said a while back), but here you have a great 3 part mini-series to read. One of the cool things about the Marvel Comics cover with issue number one is the wording “The Walking Dead”. That’s five years before the Kirkman book. Speaking of which…….

The Walking Dead #1 (1989) Are you aware there was a Walking Dead comic out 14 years prior to Kirkman’s Walking Dead? A four issue zombie horror comic. If you were, kudos to you. If not, now you’re in the know. The Walking Dead #1 from 1989 was put out by Aircel Comics and created by Jim Somerville. Issue number 3 features a Dale Keown cover! Sweet. Good luck finding any of these comics at your local shop.

Black Orchid (1988) Critically acclaimed 3 part series by artist Dave Mckean and writer Neil Gaiman.

Blade Runner (1982) With all of the talking going on regarding another Blade Runner movie, wouldn’t it be cool to get this comic in a 50 cent bin and have it signed/graded by Harrison Ford? A nice collectors item indeed. You’re welcome.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 9/24/14

[scrollGallery id=372]

So how did you all like the short Baltimore Comic Con video? If you missed it, here it is….

InvestComics will have a full rundown of all of the comic shows that we were a part of this past year. Quite a few! Some great highlights and very few lowlights, but there was one particular lowlight that far exceeded anything we could have imagined, but you’ll have to read the wrap-up article to see exactly what I’m talking about. It’s something that all collectors should definitely be aware of. It’s an alarmingly disappointing find and very important too. With that, like I said, the good superseded the bad by a huge margin.

Some quick DC Futures End comics to touch on….

1346858_xl2017484A new Superman will be making an appearance in Superman Futures End (2014) #1. This dude has it right with a full facemask on. No one will be mistaking him for Clark ever. I’m really digging the new look. Check it out on the cover to the right.

A good amount of copies remain for the Harley Quinn Futures End (2014) #1 issue, kind of surprising figuring how hot Harley was or is. Guess the cool down continues to occur.

There is only one sold out Futures End book this week. That goes to Catwoman Futures End (2014) #1 3D variant. Why is this?

New characters, costumes, and villains will continue to pop up in the Spider-Verse story line, so be sure to stay on top on these books. Edge of Spider-Verse (2014 Marvel) #3 will be one of those books.

New Avengers (2013 3rd Series) #24 is an extra sized issue. It features a spectacular Gabriele Dell’Otto cover with Thanos. Beautiful work. It’s also a part of Marvel’s “In Eight months – Time Runs Out” deal.

Robert Kirkman continues his onslaught of sold out comics. Can this dude do no wrong right now? Be very sure to buy Outcast (2014 Image) #4 this week. Not only because it’s one of the hottest series on the planet right now, but because this issue introduces a major player into the fold. Let’s see, a mainstay character’s first appearance in a HOT comic series by Robert Kirkman? Uh yeah, buy this. Buy this comic regardless of the slight lull in the aftermarket. When the Outcast series picks up steam regarding a television show, you’re going to wish you had the back issues. Especially an early issue with a major intro like this one coming out this week. Did I mention it’s sold out?

…And another hot comic that has the comic fandom in a bit of a tizzy these days, sold out two consecutive times before and now this week marks its third sellout in a row; Wool (2014 Cryptozoic) #3. Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray continue to bring it.

Parallel Man (2014 Future Dude) #1 will be sold out in a week, should check that out. Roche Limit (2014) #1 will without a doubt be seeing a second printing very soon. It will be sold out by Friday my speculator friends, better get on this one. It’s a space opus, very interesting story, and a new Image comic……all adding up to the possibility of something special. Buy this comic. Town Called Dragon (2014 Legendary) #1 is on the verge of a sellout status.

IDW goes with their fourth volume in the G.I. Joe series with GI Joe (2014 IDW Volume 4) #1. The Cliff Chiang cover is selling very well.

That’s is for this week. See you soon.

Invest wisely.

Carpe Diem.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 8/27/14

1973237

Ultimate Spider-Man #29

Wool was optioned for a movie. That prompted issue number to be sold out and with that, Wool (2014 Cryptozoic) #2 has sold out now too. Stay close to this series for now. Remember, just because a comic book was optioned does not mean anything will ever materialize. Many times the comic market has a knee jerk reaction to the news and then many are stuck with comics that are impossible to sell. The best we do get though are great stories to read.

This week Superman (2011 3rd Series) #34 sees the introduction of the villain known as Machinist. Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr. are giving the fans what they want, some new life breathe into DC’s flagship title. Is this in fact a first appearance though or just a New 52 first appearance? The Machinist first appeared in Wildstorm #1 (2006).  Same dude? Probably not.

Robert Kirkman’s Outcast continues to garner attention. The latest edition; Outcast (2014 Image) #3 comes out this week. Issue one and two sold out. Look for issue three to follow that trend.

Last week I recommended Teen Titans #16 (1982), It’s the first appearance of Captain Carrot. I was having some fun and wanted to set a trend to make the book hot. This week I will revisit the wacky, but first let me make a point…….quite a few InvestComics Hot Picks ago I explained that Marvel’s Spider-Verse saga was all a basic ploy to see which solo spider books they can possibly get off the ground and sell. Spider-Verse will bring every single Spider-Man character ever front and center. I compiled a huge Spider-Verse list of the many faces of Spider-Man. It’s a list you’d probably want to keep handy given all of the new Spider characters we’ll see popping up or getting their own comic. Like the new Spider-Woman title. How about a new Peter Porker comic? Wait Peter Porker? Yes. Check out Ultimate Spider-Man (2012 Marvel Universe) #29; Spider-Ham has taken over. So expect A LOT more Spidey books and take overs to occur moving onward towards Spider-Verse, before, during and after. Now let’s get back to the wacky stuff. Peter Porker first appeared in Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham #1 (1982). The Ultimate Spider-Ham first appeared in Ultimate FF #5 (2014). Awesome! Let Spider-Verse begin! And click right HERE to check out that InvestComics Spider-Verse Checklist, some great hidden gems in there.

[scrollGallery id=368]

Secret Origins (2014) 3rd Series #5 will focus on the character Cyborg. I have recommended DC Comics Presents #26 (1980) countless times throughout the years. This comic of course features the first appearance of the New Teen Titans and several new characters. It’s a very obtainable book, not scarce at all. The main reason for the prices to be where they are at. Cyborg first appeared in DCP #26 and he’s also going to be in the Superman vs. Batman film. Will we also get a Teen Titans spin off from this film besides the Justice League? Most likely yes, so buckle in and get ready for DC Comics Presents to become an even hotter book way down the line somewhere. It’s going to be a way for Warner Bros. to attract that younger core audience. The book is an absolute bargain right now with average RAW prices on Ebay going in the $60 range. A 9.2 graded sold for $135 and a 7.5 sold for $81. So here’s what you do. Buy yourself a high grade raw copy. Get George Perez and Marv Wolfman to sign it (get a witness). Grade it, and you have yourself a wonderful resale right now, but more so in the future.

DC Comics Presents #26 (1980) First Appearance of The New Teen Titans.

Adventures of Superman (2013) 2nd Series #16 will give a semi-Superman history lesson told by Kamandi. This history class won’t be a bore! Various artists contribute to the different Supermen throughout the years. Should be a great nostalgic look and read.

The Fox channel has a hit on their hands with the show Bob’s Burgers. Now that hit series will become a comic book for the first time; Bobs Burgers (2014) #1. Look for the Midtown Comics Exclusive for only $10. Get some of the cast to sign it. Have it witnessed of course and grade it. It’ll be a unique book to resell to a Bob’s Burgers fan.

Face Value #1 from Autism at Face Value brings the topic of autism front and center. Heroes with autism. It’s an important awareness comic that everyone should check out. If you’d like to learn more about autism and donate go right HERE to the Autism Research Institution.

Other comics you definitely need to check out this week are Wayward (2014 Image) #1, Pop (2014 Dark Horse) #1, Jaegir (2014) #0, Hero Cats (2014 Action Lab) #1, Brainstorm (2014) #1, Shinobi Ninja Princess (2014) #1, and Sundowners (2014) #1.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 7/30/14

Lots of cool news coming out of the San Diego Con this week. One of the biggest relates to the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 movie. That’s right, part 2 announced before part one even hits the screen. That’s quite brazen to say the least. By August 8th the Guardians of the Galaxy movie better have a strong showing and not fall on its face a week after its opening. We hope for the best here, but announcing a sequel to a movie that hasn’t even been released takes some brass ones, we know it’ll do well, right? Right?

Before we get to the short week, we’d like to point out a very big contest that was announced a few days ago on InvestComics. If you are a cosplayer and will be visiting the New York area (or live within the area) in October for the New York Comic Con, you need to enter this contest. A 4 day Press Pass is up for grabs. Click right HERE to check out the details.

Two comics are in for easy picking’s as far as the spec world is concerned. Low (2014 Image) #1 is sold out at Diamond and there is lots of chatter about how good this one is. You best be on this one. As for the second obvious pick up this week? How about Outcast (2014 Image) #2? Outcast has movie talks all over it already. Seems a bit ridiculous to have only one comic out and it’s getting optioned already. But that’s neither here nor there, what is not ridiculous is the money to possibly make back for your $3.99 investment. Outcast #2 is sold out. Outcast is from Robert Kirkman. He does some zombie book that has seen some success (insert dripping sarcasm there). If you see Outcast #2 on the self, do yourself a favor and buy it.

Harley Quinn (2013) #8 will have a new gang called Scatapult appearing. Chew Warrior Chicken Poyo (2014) #1 will bring back the Poyo from the Chew series once again. Poyo first appeared in Chew #8 (2010). This comic is all but gone at the distributor.

With that movie coming out this Friday. You know the one with the sequel already, 100th Anniversary Special Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) #1 will show some good sales. It also has an appearance by Silver Galactus? Is this a first appearance? If anyone knows different, please let us know. Thanks in advance!

A few books to definitely check out this week….. ComixTribe may have another hit on their hands. And Then Emily Was Gone (2014) #1 is sold out. Wool (2014 Cryptozoic) #1 is just about there on the sold out front.

Bodies (2014 Vertigo) #1 and In the House of the Worm (2014) #1 look like fantastic reads. You should check out these as well.

InvestComics Hot Picks – New Release Comics on 6/25/14

Everything you are about to read is All original material from InvestComics. 100% Authentic. No borrowed material ever, 100% InvestComics.

InvestComics has been posting some awesome pictures from Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con on its social media outlets. You MUST go there and check out the pictures that VP Rafael Rosario has been sending our way! He was also at the Special Edition New York Con last weekend and sent a boat load of pictures from there too! More pictures coming. Special thanks to Correspondent Stephanie Bloom, who reported back with some images from Wizard World Philly. Thank you Stephanie!

A quick note, the rumor mill is stirring about Moon Knight making his film debut. InvestComics has been all over this for YEARS with constant mentions of this. Here is a quickie from 2009 from InvestComics if you’d like to take a look; HERE

SupermanOne of the most anticipated Superman comics to come has arrived, Superman (2011 3rd Series) #32. Well, it’ll be here Wednesday, but it’ll be here. The new creative team of writer Geoff Johns and artist John Romita Jr. will be taking the reins. The folks at DC Comics are banking on this to be a huge hit. As well they should! This two are talents here! From all of the previews, it looks like it’s going to be a success. DC is billing the event as John Romita Jr.’s first DC work ever. While that may seem true to the masses, there is one thing that DC won’t tell you, but InvestComics will. Well, DC doesn’t have to say anything because maybe they didn’t give Mr. Romita Jr. a check back in 1994 or 1997 either. You see Mr. Romita Jr. penciled a book called Punisher/Batman: Deadly Knights in 1994 that featured that DC character in the title here. So what about 1997 you may ask? Well that one is a better book to discuss. You see, while DC, I guess didn’t give John a check for that 94 book, in 1997 he did a cover for a trade called Crossover Classics. That cover features a John Romita Jr. ……..(ready for this?)…….Superman! Cool right?! So not only is DC’s claim that the new Superman comic coming this Wednesday will be Jr.’s first DC work a bit tainted, but it’s also not the first time he’s drawn Superman professionally. What does this all mean? Well it means that if the new Superman comic heats up, the speculator could probably make a more attractive sale by offering his first true Superman work along with the hot comic. Now if you really want to make some nice cash, here’s what you do. Get either the incentive sketch variant or the incentive variant (the one he’s holding that big rock from crushing him), get them signature series/graded, couple the sale of the trade and your new 9.8 or higher signature series book and you have something very nice that a collector will want. Don’t forget to let them know that InvestComics helped you out with this one…….don’t be selfish.

[scrollGallery id=354]

death_of_wolverineSticking to the variant/signature series topic for a minute, Savage Hulk (2014) #1 will come with fanfare that seems a bit less than stellar. This shouldn’t deter the speculator from grabbing a possible gem here though. It’s an expensive grab, but one that could pay off. With the hyperbole of the new series comes a very scarce Alex Ross sketch variant. The variant could run you anywhere from $250 – $300 easily. Get an Alex Ross sig with a 9.8 or higher grade and you have a nice turnover here.

A funny thing I ran across while doing research for this week’s InvestComics Hot Picks article. Maybe someone can bring some clarification for me. Wolverine (2014 5th Series) #9 has two covers that appear to be the same, but one claw seems to be broken on one of the covers. The listing for the comic has the broken claw as the regular cover, but then the other variant cover (cover not shown within the solicitations) is done by another artist. It looks like the same artist, same cover, just a broken claw. Are there 3 covers to this comic? Take a look at the covers in this article and you’ll see it’s the same thing minus the claw. Strange……anyway, if anyone is gearing up for the whole Death of Wolverine comic, you may want to pick up the new Wolverine book this week. The end begins here for Logan.

If you know the current market, you know that there is a big comic coming from Image this week. Outcast (2014 Image) #1 is not to be missed. Even if you’re not a fan of Robert Kirkman, the Outcast #1 will be his first horror book since that zombie one that seems a tad successful. Buy this comic.

Amazing Spider-Man (2014 3rd Series) #3 will continue its hot streak this week with an appearance of the Black Cat and Silk. Who is Silk you say? She was mentioned a while ago in these here articles, but she’s going to bust out in a huge, big, large way by issue Punisher_Batman Superman_variantnumber four. That issue will be her first “official” appearance, but for now we get drips and drabs of her as a girl getting bit by a spider, shooting web, etc. in each issue. In issue number three, we see more of “this girl”. Silk will be a force when she arrives. Be prepared.

The Power Ring will be “all-new” in Justice League (2011) #31, the first appearance of the new Power Ring. The first appearance of Power Ring was back in 1964’s Justice League of America #29.

Adventures of Superman (2013) 2nd Series #14 will feature a Sugar and Spike back story. Sugar and Spike date all the way back to 1956 in their self-titled book, which happens to be their first appearance as well.

Back a year or two or three ago, Alien Legion was on tap to becoming a movie. These days, much of that talk has died down. This Wednesday however, Alien Legion will make its triumphant return in Alien Legion Uncivil War (2014) #1. Since much of the movie talk died down, Alien Legion is readily available for any of the speculators out there. Do yourself a favor and buy the Alien Legion #1 (1984) from Epic Comics because the new book will probably sell out and have all eyes set back on the Alien Legion franchise. In some cases, some of you can find the 1984 comic in the one dollar bins at your local shops.

InvestComics reported the Kickstarter campaign for Mighty Titan a while back. Now we can all bask in the awesomeness of Mighty Titan (2014) #1. Dealing with the harsh realities of cancer as the subject matter here comes a hero. This sold out comic will turn some heads.

Other definite about to be sold out or sold out comics to check out this week are; Cartoon Network Super Secret Crisis War (2014) #1, Saga (2012 Image) #20, C.O.W.L. #2, 64-Bit Zombie (2014) #1, and Spider-Man Spectacular (2014) #0.

Invest wisely. Carpe Diem.

THE WALKING DEAD’S ROBERT KIRKMAN WRITES INVINCIBLE

Sometimes I get a good chuckle out of posting press releases, especially those from Image, which tend to come with a wink and a nod. The headline “THE WALKING DEAD’S ROBERT KIRKMAN WRITES INVINCIBLE,” being a perfect example. It then goes on to have some fun with the comics industry in general, and specifically Marvel’s use of relaunching books with #1 issues.

Kirkman Proves All-New Invincible #111 is Worth the Weight of Three #1s

INVINCIBLE #111 is the first issue of a bold new direction, a startling new era, and stories for a new generation from Robert Kirkman, the creator of THE WALKING DEAD empire and up-for-anything artist Ryan Ottley. Suddenly infused with more gore and terror than a zombie apocalypse, INVINCIBLE takes a turn down the dark path of horror when Invincible is betrayed by one of his own.
“If The Walking Dead is the zombie movie that never ends, Invincible is the superhero movie that never ends. Like The Walking Dead, it takes a well-worn genre and puts a new spin on it, raising the stakes and treating things a little more seriously than they otherwise are,” said Kirkman. “With these new issues, starting with 111, we’re really going to be ramping up those elements of the series to their highest peak. I don’t think people are prepared for all the lines we’re going to cross… and not look back. This really is an exciting time to be an Invincible fan.”
INVINCIBLE #111 packs the punch of three #1 issues combined and is the perfect jumping on point for new readers, that will blow the minds of long-time Invincible fans.
INVINCIBLE #111 arrives in stores on 4/16 and will be available for $2.99.
INVINCIBLE #111 can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code FEB140476.

THE WALKING DEAD – COMICS RARITY

THE WALKING DEAD (IMAGE 2003) – COMIC BOOK SERIES – SALES MARKET REPORT

WalkingDead1

Robert Kirkman published his comic first in October 2003 at Image Comics with issue #1.  Sales were fairly low as it was a brand new unproven title.

Comic stores throughout  North America ordered 7,200 copies of #1.   Interest was immediate as orders in #2 barely fell.   In fact only issues #2 and #3 had less orders than #1.

Issue #4 was the first issue of 2004 and had heavy orders in its second month making it a better seller than #1.

Demand from collectors is always highest for a #1 issue but with the popularity growing issue sales very slow continually increased month to month.

Issue #7 was the first issue to sell over 10,000 copies.  Keep in mind this is still very low in comparison to a guaranteed seller such as Batman which was selling an average of 65,000 a month.

Issue #12 sold twice as many copies as #1.  It was also the first issue to crack the Top 150 best selling comics of the month in North America.

Issue #14 was the first issue to sell over 15,000 copies.

After issue #24 hit stands Image released a one-shot special called The Walking Dead Script Book.

Issue #28 was the first issue to sell over 20,000 copies.

So three years into the series each issue is basically increasing readership as the series continually stopped growing.   This would never happen with a superhero title from any publisher.

Issue #36 was the first issue ever to crack The top 100 best selling comics of the month in North America.

During the release of #49 a one-shot called The Walking Dead Special Edition was released May 2008 and had orders of over 9,000 which was only 30% of the regular issue at that time.

The anniversary issue #50 (July 2008) had much larger orders/sales than any other regular issue and is the most common of the first 74 issues.

August 2009 it is announced in the news that the comic will be picked up as a TV series.

Issue #75 (August 2010) was another higher than usual ordered anniversary issue and the first issue to ever sell 30,000 copies.  It was also the first issue to crack the Top 75 best selling comics of the month in North America.  Sales were now more than 400% that of #1.

The show debuted on TV in October 2010 while issue #78 was on the stands.   Sales had been steadily increasing but there was no huge jump in orders in the months leading up to the TV show debut.

Issue #80 (January 2011) was the first issue to crack the Top 50 best selling comics of the month in North America.

At the same time as issue #80 Image re-released #1-52 in a weekly reprint series called The Walking Dead Weekly.  Issue #1 January 2011) had the highest sales of all issues at 8,800 which interestingly enough was better sales than the original #1.    During 2011 you could buy all 52 issues.  Sales dropped low enough by the end issues #40-52 had sales of less than 3,000 each making these the rarest of all Walking Dead related comics however keep in mind they are still reprint issues.

Issue #83 (April 2011) is the first issue to sell over 35,000 copies and hit stands while Season 1 was airing on TV.

At the same time as #83 a new 4 issue monthly series debuted called The Walking Dead Survivors Guide.  All 4 issues sold over 10,000 copies each but this was only 1/3 of the orders of the regular issues released at the same time.

Issue #97 (May 2012) was a landmark issue and not only the first issue to top 40,000 orders but in fact topped 60,000 !!  It was also the first issue to crack the Top 30 best selling comics of the month.

Issues #97-99 were a leadup to the grand landmark issue #100.00

Issue #100 (July 2012) shipped with various variant covers and had a total order of 379,000 copies making it the largest selling single comic of this decade as well as the #2 highest ordered comic of the 21st Century and the #1 comic of the century for Image Comics.   A special chromium cover priced at $9.99 each had 31,000 copies out of the large total order.    This was the peak of Walking Dead fever sold before Season 3 of the TV show debuted.

Issue #103 (October 2012) is the 2nd best selling Walking Dead comic ever and the only other issue to rank in the top 10 best selling comics of the month in North America.  That same month a one-shot special was released titled Walking Dead Michonne Special.  It had orders of almost 50,000 copies making it a better seller than any original issues #1-96.

Since issue #100 issue every new issue has sold over 50,000 copies each and usually ranks around the 30th best selling comic of the month.

Comic sales have actually been overshadowed by the tremendous success of the series reprinted in Graphic Novel format.

All issues are kept in print and the first graphic novel reprinting the earliest issues as now sold over 200,000 copies and is carried not only in comic stores but also in book stores everywhere.

ROBERT KIRKMAN – THIEF OF THIEVES – IMAGE

Creator of The Walking Dead debuted a new series in February 2012.  Sales were respectable but safe.

Interest in the series continued to grow and sales jumped up drastically for issue #4.

All issues are fairly uncommon as orders have never hit 20,000 for any original 1st printing of any issue.

Issue 5 (1st print) is the best selling issue of the series and issue #3 is the rarest lowest selling issue of the series.

To put things into perspective issue #1 is rarer than Walking Dead #23.   Thief #3 is rarer than Walking Dead #10.

Back issue values of the first 5 issues continues to increase and Image continues to reprint sending out new printings with different colored variant covers.

HOT PICKS

[scrollGallery id=241]

…Each and every week the IC Hot Picks brings the fan an almost certainty. A book that will breakout or be on the verge of a major or sometimes minor uptick in the aftermarket. Whether it’s a Bear market (sell) or a Bull market (buy), InvestComics has your back. Hopefully many of you heed this professional advice and pick up the recommended comics at your local shop. Yes the digital age is nice, but your local comic shops are the reason we all love comics. Support your shops fans, it’s important. There is room for everyone on this ship.

So what certainty does the InvestComics Hot Picks have this week you may ask? How about Invincible? If by some strange non-apparent reason you have been living under a rock for the past 10 years or so, Invincible is essentially the modern day Peter Parker. You talk about Xbreakout potential? This character; Mark Grayson is it. With that said, the release of Invincible Universe (2013) #1 this week will prove once again that this Robert Kirkman character is to reign supreme. How much longer before we see Robert’s character on the big screen? Television? Not so much. Invincible would not bode well on the tube. On the big screen is where he belongs and WHEN he does, look out. Yes, look out for Tech Jacket #1 (2002) for his first appearance to explode in the aftermarket when Grayson finds his way to the movie theater.

On a much smaller scale this week fans will see X (2013 Dark Horse) #0 sitting on the new release shelf. Although Killer X from Dark Horse is not as well-known as Invincible, the character stands to be a bad ass if he catches on. His first appearance was in Dark Horse Comics #8 (1993). In 1994 X appeared in his own self-titled book which lasted only 25 issues. The number one issue featured Rick Leonardi on pencils and Jimmy Palmiotti on inks. Don’t let this comic slip through your hands this week; Dark Horse’s version of Batman is here.

InvestComics told you about sex. No not the birds and the bees, but Sex #1 from Image Comics. Was it the lure of the title that made the first comic sellout so quickly that it’s now going to a third printing? Well all indicators’ point to this NOT being the case. Crappy stories in today’s market do not go back to the printer that often. The 90’s maybe, that’s a different story. In today’s market, fans and collectors are much wiser; they’re not going to be fooled with the prism/die-cut cover anymore. It’s about substance, about what is in the middle of your ears. Any of the hype issues; death or the president on the cover will eventually wane. So are you in the mood? Feeling frisky? Don’t miss out on more sex with Sex (2013 Image) #2 out this week. Remember, the story must sustain here to remain a hot book. No reason not to think that will not happen though.

Avenging Spider-Man (2011) #19 has its attention on the Sleepwalker character. The appearance of this hero will not boaster sales at all for the Avenging Spidey title, but it will add to an interesting story. We hope. If one feels so inclined to look for Sleep’s first appearance; one can find it in the 25 cent box at your local shop or comic convention. Look for Sleepwalker #1 (1991). Sweet dreams!

With the Iron Man 3 movie hype fast approaching, Marvel brings us Secret Avengers (2013 Marvel) 2nd Series #3. Why is this relevant to the new movie? Why it’s the “deadly new secret” of the New Iron Patriot. Yippee! Iron Patriot first appeared in Dark Avengers #1 (2009). And you already own that book…..right?

Rounding out the InvestComics Hot Picks this week are DC Batman Lil Gotham (2013) #1, Colonized (2013 IDW) #1, Kiss Solo (2013 IDW) #1,andG.I. Joe Cobra Files (2013 IDW) #1.

IMAGE and Bob Fingerman take MINIMUM WAGE to the MAX

LIVING TO THE MAXIMUM WHILE MAKING THE MINIMUM

The definitive edition of Fingerman’s MINIMUM WAGE in March

Fumbling lives and loves, a New York City so real you can smell it, people with everyday problems, hopes, and heartbreak — this is the world of Bob Fingerman’s Minimum Wage, a slice-of-life comic that captured a devoted following in the late 1990s. One of that following is Robert Kirkman, who writes the introduction to the definitive edition of Fingerman’s seminal work, MAXIMUM MINIMUM WAGE, a hardcover collection to be released in March.

Minimum Wage is an important comic,” Kirkman writes in the introduction. “If I were tasked with introducing someone to comics in an attempt to make them love and cherish the medium as much as I do, I’d give them Watchmen, Bone, Savage Dragon, and Minimum Wage.”

At the center of Minimum Wage are Rob and Sylvia, a freelance cartoonist and a beauty salon manager — young, in love, and just trying to make their way to their real lives. An array of vivid characters and New York City “personalities” round out the supporting cast. Fingerman’s previous collection of Minimum Wage, Beg the Question, was nominated for two 2003 Eisner Awards (Best Graphic Novel — Reprint and Best Publication Design), one 2003 Harvey Award (Best Graphic Album of Previously Published Work), and one 2003 Ignatz Award (Outstanding Graphic Novel or Collection).

MAXIMUM MINIMUM WAGE includes the “lost” first issue of Minimum Wage, Minimum Wage Book One, as well as the script for the never-drawn eleventh issue, and an impressive collection of pin-ups by top comics artists, including Peter Bagge, Guy Davis, Dean Haspiel, Gilbert Hernandez, Joe Infurnani, Roger Langridge, Kevin Nowlan, Dave Johnson, Ted McKeever, Mike Mignola, Jill Thompson and more!

A 384-page, black-and-white hardcover book (with 16 pages in full-color), MAXIMUM MINIMUM WAGE will be in stores on March 20 and retail for $34.99. Its ISBN is 978-1-60706-674-3.

PRAISE FOR BOB FINGERMAN

“Fingerman is a brilliant satirist, artist and mind.” ⎯ Trey Parker (South Park, The Book of Mormon)

“Bob Fingerman is a narrative master, as brilliantly adept with words as with images. His vision is urbane, riotous, and unflinching.” ⎯ Jonathan Lethem (The Fortress of Solitude, Omega: The Unknown)

“Mr. Fingerman is a deeply talented, creative, and disturbed man.” — Max Brooks (World War Z)

“It doesn’t seem fair that Bob Fingerman gets to be such a funny, savvy, cool and smart writer who can also draw. It gives him an advantage and I may need to have him assassinated.” — Augusten Burroughs (Running With Scissors)

PRAISE FOR BOB FINGERMAN’S MINIMUM WAGE (previous editions):
“Fingerman’s visual style is a witty combo of old-school underground-comics grunginess and new-school precision; his dialogue is worthy of the stage — it’s terrific screwball-comedy byplay that rings true. A-” — Entertainment Weekly

“Fingerman’s dialogue is biting and realistic, and his drawing is exceptional.” — Publishers Weekly

Beg The Question‘s episodic, interwoven tales of career disappointments and romantic complications take on the mesmeric quality of a good soap opera…the writing and the art contain plenty of stark, truthful moments.” — The A.V. Club
“Fingerman depicts their eventful if directionless lives with humor and empathy… Anyone who has lived or envied la vie bohème should relate to this dead-on evocation of a contemporary version of it.” — Booklist
“Beg the Question is a coming-of-age graphic novel for twenty-somethings and anyone who remembers being that age. It is a funny, heartwarming, and poignant work. It helps make the case for comics being THE great American art form.” — The Comic Buyers’ Guide
“…a meticulous, smutty, hilarious quasi-autobiographical slice of life about a young cartoonist maintaining grownup relationships while struggling to rise from the ‘low-end of the New York food chain.’ Funny if you’ve been there, even funnier if you still are.” — The New York Press

Hero Initiative Partners with The Walking Dead for First-Ever Image Comics “100 Project”

Hero Initiative Partners with The Walking Dead for First-Ever Image Comics “100 Project” Including original covers drawn by Charlie Adlard and (yes) The Walking Dead creator/writer Robert Kirkman

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 14, 2012) – The Hero Initiative, the charity dedicated to helping comic creators in medical and financial need, has drawn great acclaim for its “100 Projects” in recent years, in which 100 artists draw an original cover on a special anniversary issue.

Now, after running projects with Marvel Comics, DC and Archie, Hero Initiative proudly announces that its latest and greatest “100 Project” will feature the best-selling comic of 2012—The Walking Dead #100. This marks the first time Hero has partnered in such a way with Image Comics and Skybound.

Artists including The Walking Dead illustrator, Charlie Adlard, will contribute original covers, as will other top talents such as Dan Brereton, Ian Churchill, Kevin Eastman, Joe Jusko, Dale Keown and Whilce Portacio. And yes, even The Walking Dead creator/writer and Image Comics partner Robert Kirkman will contribute. (He can draw a little!)

“The Walking Dead would have never become the success it’s become without the trailblazers who put in the hard work to make this industry live on into the future,” said Kirkman. “Doing things like this for The Hero Initiative, which helps creators who have fallen on hard times, is a way for Charlie Adlard and I to give back to the community that has provided us with countless hours of entertainment and also a pretty cushy living. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do.”

“They say charity begins at home. Well, I can’t think of one closer to that than the Hero Initiative,” said Adlard. “It’s great to be able to give back to the creators who inspired me.”

A public viewing of all 100 covers will be scheduled for winter of 2012-13, along with auctions of all the original covers. A book collecting all the art will be available in 2013.

HESTER and NAUCK to helm ongoing INVINCIBLE Spin-Off, GUARDING THE GLOBE

THE GLOBE’S NEW GUARDIANS
Robert Kirkman’s series returns as ongoing with new creative team

The miniseries that spun out of Robert Kirkman’s original INVINCIBLE universe, GUARDING THE GLOBE, will be back in September as an ongoing series from Skybound/Image Comics.

Phil Hester, just coming off a successful run on THE DARKNESS, will be taking over writing duties from Kirkman and artist Todd Nauck (Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, YOUNG JUSTICE) will be handling all the art of the ongoing series beginning with issue #1.

Months before it hits the shelves again, fans will be given a taste of what’s to come from the new creative team on Free Comic Book Day, May 5th.

“The Invincible Universe has outgrown its parent title and I’m very excited about being able to tell larger, more in depth stories with some of the key players from that book in this series,” said GUARDING THE GLOBE creator/writer Robert Kirkman, “Phil Hester and Todd Nauck are well known to fans of superhero comics and I think people are fully aware that they’re going to knock this book out of the park.”

Familiar yet fresh, GUARDING THE GLOBE will appeal to fans of the back-to-basics approach to superhero comics that INVINCIBLE is known for. Heroes both familiar and new struggle to protect Earth in Invincible’s absence. As the Viltrumite War rages on within the pages of INVINCIBLE, the ranks of the Guardians of the Globe are suddenly depleted. The world is in danger, and the team is in search of new blood.

Hester and Nauck have described the first issue of the GUARDING THE GLOBE ongoing as a perfect starting point for those that haven’t read any of the series before.

“When Robert first approached me about this ongoing series, I knew I wanted to be a part of GUARDING THE GLOBE,” said Nauck, whose creator-owned series WILDGUARD was published by Image. “I really respect what Robert’s accomplished so far with the series and I’m having a blast drawing this book. I feel it’s my best work to date. It’s great to be working with Image Comics again!”

“When Robert floated the idea it didn’t take me very long to say yes,” added Hester. “The characters in GUARDING THE GLOBE have the same kind of freshness INVINCIBLE does. It’s a great chance to both pay homage to super heroes and upend them a bit in way that isn’t cynical, but humanizing.”

Each 32-page full-color issue will be available for purchase and reorder in comic book stores and on multiple digital platforms.
