Interview Funko – Chris Sully

Chris Sully and our website go back a long while. Well, not Trending Pop Culture, but InvestComics. We first met up with Chris and Steve doing their thing on their NerdFu Podcast quite a few years back. Not withstanding or any bias here for the sake of this interview, but The NerdFu Podcast is one of the premiere podcast out there. If you’re seeking a good listen about anything and everything regarding the pop culture scene, the NerdFu Podcast would be right up your alley. Be sure to check out their podcast by clicking right HERE.
So as the years lumbered on, Chris Sully moved on to a new gig a few years ago himself, but he still holds down the podcast with Steve on a regular basis. So, besides being a co-podcaster extraordinaire, Mr. Sully is the Marketing Manager at Funko. Let’s chat with Chris for a bit.

Trending Pop Culture: Hi Chris! We last met up in person at New York Comic Con 2017. Have you been busy since then at all? (sarcasm).
Chris Sully: That was just this past October, but it feels like at least 84 years.

TPC: So, let’s jump right in shall we? From the beginning, how old were you when you discovered you were into the superhero stuff/pop culture stuff?
CS: My first memories of being a “nerd/geek” started with movies (like Clash of the Titans, Gremlins, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters), toys/collectibles (like Masters of the Universe, Transformers, GI Joe & Star Wars) & video games (Atari 2600, Contra, Super Mario Bros., Kung Fu, etc.). It didn’t seem out of the ordinary at the time, because my dad was into the same things and so were all of my friends.

TPC: So now that you’re a tad older, what gets you pumped now?
CS: Many of the same things still resonate, but at least I don’t have to ask Mom & Dad for money or put things on my Christmas wish list any more. I still LOVE movies, collectibles and video games, but with the popularity of comic cons, I actually have the chance to go and meet some of my heroes (actors, designers, creators) in person, which I NEVER thought would be possible.

TPC: What’s your take on the whole Thanos thing? You buying it? Is everyone dead in your opinion? Who comes back, who doesn’t? What happens next in Mr. Sully’s Infinity War film?
CS: Not everyone that vanished is dead, but I do believe that Marvel is daring enough to shake things up by killing off a few key characters and/or changing up who plays them. I am all for it. As much as I love Thor, Captain America and Iron Man, the Marvel universe has 100s of characters to choose from and I would love to see them all on the big screen at some point.

TPC: Okay, let’s move on to you meeting up with Steve and this wonderful thing comes of it, NerdFu Podcast. How does this come about and what were your expectations? If any.
CS: Steve and I knew each other for a few years, but never really hung out…. until we started talking about movies and nerd culture. He called me up on day and said “You wanna go to SDCC?” I honestly thought that was an industry event and never even dreamed about going. Luckily, we timed it right, before tickets became impossible to get. It was 2012 and we were off to San Diego for something we couldn’t possibly be prepared for. We were blown away by the experience and the people that we met and decided that we need to make this our job! Some of our line friends (people we met in our first long SDCC lines and still talk to today) joked that Steve and I were pretty funny and should start our own podcast. That stuck with us and a few months later (April, 2013) we launched the Nerd Fu podcast and our website.

TPC: What are some of the highlights from this podcast venture….so far.
CS: Most importantly, the podcast gave us the chance to hang out and talk nerd. We decided early on that even if that’s all that ever happened, we would be fine with it. Luckily it turned into much more. Over the last 5 years, we’ve been to dozens of cons all over the country, met many of our favorite celebrities, podcasted with some of our favorite podcasters and made a TON of new friends/contacts. We’re approaching our 225th episode of the podcast and hope to continue on for years to come.

TPC: Do you guys record live and edit or do listeners get the raw material?
CS: We have recorded live a few times, including our 100th episode, with a small crowd. That was a lot of fun and something we would love to do again one day. We’ve appeared at several cons as part of a podcasting panel and even started our own intro to podcasting panel we call #ReadySetPodcast, which we hope to do at future conventions. For our weekly podcasts, there is very rarely any editing. We basically hit record and then stop when we’ve gone through all of our topics/notes. This was mainly out of necessity (since we had NO editing skills in the beginning), but it has really honed our ability to lead a conversation, without dead air or weird pauses. We’ve definitely improved over the years and hope to continue to do so.

TPC: With your busy schedule at Funko, when can fans expect podcast episodes to come out?
CS: For Nerd Fu, Steve and I have worked really hard to keep our standard schedule of a new episode every week, typically on Thursday or Friday. There have been a few weeks without an episode, but not many.

TPC: You’re an obvious fan of the comic book fandom. What are you picking up these days? Besides what InvestComics recommended all of those years for you. Now Trending PopCulture is doing that for ya, right? Right??
CS: I am definitely a fan of comics, but (and this part may not sit well with others) I have never been able to get into the format. I’ve tried, but just can’t get hooked. I DO love the artwork throughout the comics and especially the covers. To me, they are works of art and I treat them as such. I have always found the investment side of collecting fascinating and found Trending Pop Culture (InvestComics) when developing the idea of making my own investment protfolio of comics. The Top 5 from TPC has been amazing, turning me on to tons of great investments over the years.

Hermey

TPC: We’re going to assume you’re a collector of all things pop culture, including Funko POP!, correct? When did your affection towards the POP! figures begin?
CS: I bought my first Funko Pop! sometime in 2011, for my wife. It was the Hermey Pop! from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I stumbled onto it at a Target and really liked the style. Then I started finding others, like Marvel & Disney. When we attended SDCC in 2012, we walked into the booth and got a feel for how big the business could be, and started collecting more and more.

TPC: So, did you ever envision yourself actually holding a position at Funko? How does this come about?
CS: I really never thought it would be possible, but that didn’t stop me from dreaming and hoping. I worked in social media at a Fortune 100 company for a few years and it clearly was not the right fit. During that time, we had started Nerd Fu and gotten to know the marketing team at Funko. When I saw that they were hiring for a new marketing position, I immediately reached out! Because of the work we had done at Nerd Fu, they knew what I was capable of and gave me a shot. We picked up and moved from Texas and haven’t looked back since. It was one of the best decisions of my life.

TPC: Seeing you at New York Comic Con every year is extremely breathtaking to witness. The production and the constant teamwork is mindboggling. You have one of the, if not the busiest booths every single year. In which this happens at many shows, not just NYCC! What challenges accompany being the head marketer of the most sought-after items within the pop culture genre?
CS: I am just one member of an amazing team. We are blessed to have an amazing fan base (known as the Funko Funatics) and volunteers that come out to the conventions to help us stock and sell all of the exclusives. These conventions take months to plan for and require very long days at the cons, but it is all worth it. Seeing the happy fans come thru and leave with the giant blue bags of exclusives, then the photos that they share of their collection online makes it all worth while. If we didn’t work hard to make that happen and respect the fans, we wouldn’t be in the position that we are in. I happily jumped into the machine that was already running and I do whatever I can to keep it running.

TPC: What’s the one thing you hear the most from fans regarding the Funko line?
CS: Everyone wants to know when we’ll make __________ (insert fandom here). We are all fans of something and we all have a few movies, TV shows, video games, etc that we would love to have figures for. I’ve been lucky enough to see Firefly, The Goonies, Ghostbusters, Monsters, Inc and a plethora of my fandoms turned into Pop!s and I know that is what our fans want for their fandoms.

TPC: It’s absolutely no secret that there is a very deep aftermarket for Funko POP!’s. Baseball has the Honus Wagner card, Comics has Action Comics #1, finish this; Funko has……
CS: That is really a question for each fan. There are a few of the all-time greats, like the 2012 SDCC Gold Loki, the flocked Sulley, the Chrome Batman, etc., but I don’t think there is the ONE that everyone is after. Part of the beauty of creating figures for so many unique licenses is that fans have a huge field of figures to pick from. For me, it’s still the Gold Loki and the original flocked Chewbacca Pop!

TPC: In your opinion, what is it about the figures that makes them so popular year in and year out? And what separates them from so many others trying to emulate the Funko brand?
CS: First and foremost – it’s the art! The Funko artists are amazing. The style of the figures is what first brought people to Funko. The licensing is the other important part. Funko has offered thousands of licensed products, including licenses that other companies might not focus on. As I me mentioned before, everyone is a fan of something and they want to add a figure or figures from that fandom to their collection/desk. The price point is also attractive. Pop!s typically retail for around $9.99, which is not a big ask, especially compared to other companies that make statues or figures that can run hundreds of dollars.

TPC: What can we expect in the future from Funko? Any surprises or we just going to get continued awesomeness from Funko?
CS: It’ll be straight-up awesomeness from here on out. But seriously, the licensing team and artists are continuing to push the boundaries of what and how we bring everyone’s fandoms to vinyl (and other) forms. Pop!s will continue, along with other figures, like my new favorite VYNL and the new 5 Star line. Funko has plush, shirts, action figures, keychains, blind bag/box figures…. Funko acquired LoungeFly last year as well, which adds purses, wallets, backpacks, mini-backpacks and more. And be on the lookout for Cereal and Pez, all coming soon!

TPC: What about you Mr. Sully? Are we going to see you with a big fat cigar, white suit, running New York City trying to kill Spider-Man in the future? You shouldn’t kill Spidey, he’s a nice boy.
CS: Ha! I don’t have any plans to take over the city or go after any superheroes. I’m more than happy to continue with Nerd Fu and Funko, podcasting and interacting with other nerds and talking fandoms. I’ve been doing it my whole life and I’m just stoked that someone is willing to pay me to continue doing so.

TPC: Thank you for spending a little time with us Chris. We’ll listen to you (and Steve) on NerdFu and catch up with you at New York Comic Con 2018.
CSCan’t wait! I’m really looking forward to returning to New York and NYCC again this year. See you there Jay!!

Be sure to tune into Nerd Fu right HERE. Go to the Funko website right HERE. Next time you’re at a show, say hello to Chris!

Trending Stars – Interview with Sean Conn

Sean Conn is a rapper from New York, hailing from Queens. In 2005, Sean Conn debut his first LP ‘The One’. One year later he teamed with Elus and Frsh Aire to form a Hip-Hop group named Triboro. Sean Conn has won numerous awards during his early tenure, including buzz factor of the year (2012) and most original artist in 2014.

In 2015, Sean Conn started his own brand ‘Vigga Entertainment’. In early 2016 he released his very first single ‘Silver Lining’ from the LP; The Man With The Golden Mic’. The music video has been viewed over 130,000 times. His LP ‘The Man With The Golden Mic’ dropped in 2017. The Golden Mic video has surpassed the 300,000 mark on YouTube.

No doubt, Sean Conn 00 is trending and certainly has arrived.

Let’s catch up phenom, Sean Conn……

Trending Pop Culture: For those not familiar with the Sean Conn 00 brand yet, can you catch us up?

Sean Conn: Yes I’m Hip Hop’s Secret Agent and I have been in this game for years. I have seen a lot and learned a lot in my 20 year journey.

TPC: Your roots are deeply imbedded in New York, is this where your main influence is drawn from? Who were your influences growing up?

SC: I have heavy influence from my home town of New York, and that’s where the love started. Hearing Run DMC, L.L. Cool J, Whodini, Big Daddy Kane, Lord Finesse and Rakim are the ones that sparked the love and I would see all the video of the artist I named on Video Music Box, That show was Hip Hop 101 and I would run home after school to see it. The artist that made me want to write raps was Redman, his first LP changed my Life.

TPC: Listening to your LP “The Man With The Golden Mic”(which is amazing), It’s noticeable that some music on the LP mix some old school flavor with new flavor too. Tracks like ‘Oh My God’, ‘Quest for the Master Flows’, ‘So You Wanna Be’, how do you take that direction when laying the tracks down?

SC: Thanks, I put this project together from a dream I had, (An actually Sleeping Dream) That I did an album dedicated to the Golden Age of Hip Hop, and after waking up I wrote down the dream and started on the L.P. it has that good Ol feel with a new age twist. Once I knew what I wanted to relay to the people I started to get music submitted to me by some well-known and unknown producers that had the vibe I was looking for, one I got a bulk of music I broke it down by feeling and mode. I wanted to have a very well-rounded LP so songs like (Oh My God) have a real Boom Bap sound and (Quest For The Master Flows) is a visual that is painted by the words of the story and mission and then (So You Wanna Be) Brings out more of a hardcore edge to it with a heavy thumping beat for that head nod effect. I want people to be able to just press play and enjoy with no skipping do to music that is not Quality.

TPC: A three-part question – The process; How do you lay down lyrics? Do you always have beats and lyrics rolling around in your head? Are you armed with your phone or something around at all times to get your ideas down, so you don’t forget them?

SC: I Lay down lyrics in a few ways, I still have a notebook and pen that I use especially when I’m just writing with no beat. I also have my phone where I might be walking and thoughts for songs (Me hearing a sound or vibe and I then make a hook to in my voice recording app) and I also like to vibe to beats one at a time and if I get that feeling where I’m freestyling the verse and its flowing in seconds I know its time to write the song right now. but other times I might have a beat I like but that instant vibe is not there and I work on it over time. So my process can vary when laying down lyrics.

TPC: In 2016, the brand ‘Vigga Entertainment’ was conceived. How did this come to fruition?

SC: This is one of the most unique stories how this brand and name came about. In 2008 I was in the Studio with my TRIBORO family and someone pointed out how in the film Boyz N Da Hood right before the famous “We Got A Problem” – Ice Cube scene When dude asked Morris Chesnut “What the F@#k you looking at” if you replay it he said “I’m still trying to find out Vigga!!”. We then would call each other Vigga and it stuck, V.I.G.G.A (Very Intelligent Getting Goals Accomplished) that was a concept taken from a 2-pac Acronym.and after 7 years of saying it, it became a way of life and my brand.

TPC: Your video ‘Viggas In Africa’, featuring artist Hous Da Beast. Where was that video shot? And how was it teaming with Hous Da Beast?

SC: Working with Hous is always dope! he is very talented and has been down with me since my first mix tape that dropped 15 years ago (The Last Colony Presents Sean Conn) Where he makes his music debut and is on the cover with me. I was teaching him the emcee way from the start like I was shown by my mentors. We shot the video in Queens NY and the day the video dropped my Cue family in Ghana Africa posted it on their blog and its been a world-wide vibe now with a huge remix on the way.

TPC: A lot of your videos show you in your comic book hero gear. Are you a comic book fan?

SC: I’m a big time comic book fan from day one even before Hip Hop, my older brother was into comics and he is 5 years older so when i was 5 or so he would walk me to the comic store and when I was only to buy DC and he would by Marvel. I did not understand then but because he started me that way I have so many great DC runs from the 80’s like the Marv Wolfman George Perez run of the Teen Titans  and all the Crisis On Infinite Earths where so many heroes die like The Flash and Super Girl. but I was still able to read all his comics so I was all into Marvel Secret Wars and so much more.

TPC: Will we see any music from you regarding your affinity towards the comic book genre?

SC: Yes I have some music I will be working on for my video game updates soundtrack and my next LP that will have affinity with the comic book genre. The start of my video game is a 8 page comic that I will be making an actual comic series in the future

TPC: If you could play a super hero or villain in a movie, who would it be and why?

SC: I would play the Hero, I have been the good guy all my life, looking to help people in need and working with others that share special ability. I’m also into health and fitness so its only right I play the hero to save the day. I’m already a hero to many, or at least that’s what i have been told. also you can be a super hero without powers kinda like a Secret Agent Of Hip Hop would be. Lol

TPC: You have a video game out too. ‘Quest For The Golden Mics’. It looks like a lot of fun. How did you get this going? Are you a gamer? ….And where can we get it?

SC: I’m also a BIG time gamer, that was hand and hand with comics since Atari and Intellivison. I have played video games all my life, when I started to work on my LP (The Man With The Golden Mic) I knew this was a close to the heart project and to me to be yourself is a big key in success. I love Hip Hop, Video Games And Comic Books so I decided my Entertainment Company would include all 3. The game is available on I-phone Appstore and Android Google Play. It’s an old school beat em up arcade style game where I am the main character that gets zapped into the world of Hiphopia to find the 5 golden mics that will restore peace and harmony to a city now infected with the dark force energy. What makes this game so unique is you control the main character with a record spinning on a turntable, all elements of Hip Hop are shown in this game.

TPC: Getting back to the videos. There are many positive vibes going on within your videos. Is this done intentionally or are you just an easy vibe type person?

SC: I feel what you give is what you get on all levels, I am a very positive minded person and it reflects in my music and videos. I don’t intentionally put out the vibes its just who I have become over the years.

TPC: An important (social) video by you and Ty Nitty regarding Police Brutality strikes a stark message. The video, ‘Quiet’ is quite raw and delivers some powerful lyrics. How is it that the “system” be fixed to the point brutality ceases to exist? Why is it so broken in your opinion?

SC: Big shout out to the legend Ty Nitty who hit me up to join him on this mission. Police Brutality has been around from the start and in my opinion it will not cease to exist until the laws are changed and the law enforcement as a whole has a reset. How that happens I pray we find out and it also starts with self unity, we are killing each other even faster than them so once we unite then we can take a real stand and not just when a cop killing an unarmed man is exposed.

TPC: Your positivity and faith will help bring light (and guidance) to this very important topic within our society. What would ask from the youth growing up in the urban areas to help alleviate some of the pressures of this ongoing issue within their communities?

SC: We need to unite the youth in workshops but the best way is by example, we need more positive role models. I am going to schools to talk to them for carrier day and if more of us artist and entertainers do this the effect would be amazing, they follow us more than their parents at times. Hands on is the best way, show that you care it goes a long way.

TPC: Collaborations are an important way to get a message out. But, collaborations are not always about a message, but just plan ol’ fun. One collaboration you must be extremely proud of is with Miss Olivia, your daughter, on the single ‘How You Really Rock’ (featuring Miss Olivia). She’s so good. Will their be future collaborations planned with Miss Olivia?

SC: Thanks! I’m very excited and proud for the release of this single for a number of reasons, when I was working on my project I knew I needed a fun record to have a well-balanced LP. I was playing the beat one day and I seen Olivia dancing to the beat so I said what do you hear on this for a chorus? She told me to play it from the start and the she said the full hook and I was like wow that’s a hit! we ended up going to the studio that week and she knocked it out the park! This single is dropping May 4th and has a world-wide dance challenge that starts the same day. Miss Olivia is looking to be an actress so if her music talent get her that opportunity then so be it, she is just full of talent from singing to dancing and making Hip Hop hooks (If she ever wants to make a song I’m all for it but that will be on her I just support her 100% as a father should.

TPC: You’ve collaborated and have had guest spots on some of your music. Can we expect more in the future? Anyone you can name drop right now?

SC: Yes. Being CEO of Vigga ENT is very demanding and time consuming. Now that my album is out as well as the video game I can get back to being an artist doing collaborations with artist from all over the world, Ghana Africa being one. I don’t want to name drop as of yet but I will just say that I will be finishing the year up very strong.

TPC: Many young artist are always trying to break into the hip hop scene. What is the one piece of advice you can offer up to help guide someone?

SC: They have a huge advantage with the age of technology and social media. Do your research for yourself to educate yourself, the information for all you need to know is free via YouTube and Google. Trust in yourself and never let yourself down.

TPC: What can fans expect to see in the near and farther future from Sean Conn?

SC: Expect one of the biggest viral challenges ever, a film appearance, shows in the States and Overseas, more videos off my album and a sophomore LP that will be like night and day compared to my debut.

TPC: Where can fans follow your progress as you do your thing? Social media outlets……

SC: All outlets @seancon00 (That’s 2 zeros) FB, IG, Twitter, Youtube.

TPC: If fans would like to purchase your music and or listen to some tracks, where would they go?

A DC character that’s made only a handful of appearances since (8 to be exact, yeah, yeah more than a handful + 3 digits) 2016/2017 will reappear outside of the Deathstroke universe for the first time. This character is named Red Lion. (insert sarcasm here) boy does this dude look familiar. Can’t seem to place it. Maybe the number one movie (Marvel) at the box office right now? Nah, that’s not it. Anyway, The Red Lion is a main adversary of Deathstroke’s and will appear in Justice League #41 this Wednesday. Red Lion first appeared in Deathstroke Rebirth #1 (2016).
Learn some secrets behind the new Damage character in Damage #3 as Wonder Woman rings in Damage with her lasso. Supposedly some deep secrets here. Maybe having to do with other characters within the DC Universe? Maybe not, who knows? Either way, definitely looking forward to this.
DC delivers the origin of King Rath in Aquaman #34. Writer Dan Abnett and artist Mirko Colak.
There will be an obvious trending comic this Wednesday. That comic will be Weapon H #1. If you need this article to tell you this, well….you’re probably really new at this. So if you’re new, Weapon H is one of these new breakout characters from the Marvel Universe. Weapon H is a mash-up of the Hulk and Wolverine. Weapon H first appeared in Totally Awesome Hulk #22 FIVE months ago (in which we gave fans a heads up on). This first appearance last sold on Ebay for $60 for a raw copy. A raw has sold for upwards of $80 on Ebay. A graded CGC 9.8 sold for a whopping $172. Are we living in the Twilight Zone? So getting back to Weapon H #1. This is the first solo title, second prints will be announced shortly thereafter.

The Cable character is a hot item these days. Marvel will strike while the iron is hot. Cable #155 begins a look at Cable’s past and a possible introduction of a new character to boot. The new creative team of writer Zac Thompson and artist German Peralta bring a new look into this characters past and a start of an important storyline of this character.
The “House of Ideas” sometimes really beat an idea to the ground don’t they? Case in point, the Cosmic Ghost Rider seems to be trending (for now), so what does Marvel do? Well, they make everyone a Ghost Rider! Now the not so informed speculators and other places are pushing the idea that this is a fantastic idea (monetarily) and it will be worth millions one day. The main question one should ask themselves before plucking down $40 or $50 or $80 for a first appearance of Cosmic Ghost Rider or a Weapon H or a Red Goblin is, where will this character be in 5 years? A third-rate character? The modern day Venom attraction? A trending sustainable character that a non-comic fan would know its name? At the end of the day, it’s YOUR money, I’m just here offering things to think about, an opinion. Fun story idea though for what Marvel is doing concerning Ghost Rider at the moment. Although a neat idea, Cosmic GR and a team of Ghost Rider heroes, the idea could fade as does the Ghost Rider lure all the time. A quick punch in the gut, everyone goes nuts and then the dust settles, and no one cares. It’s the Ghost Rider way. It’s the trend. Happens all the time. This week Doctor Strange Damnation #3 showcases Thor, Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, Black Panther among others as Ghost Rider based characters. Basically, a flaming skull head on top of their regular bodies. Flame on! Wait, wait wrong dude….
Jane Foster will meet her maker this Wednesday in Mighty Thor #705. Marvel is killing Thor. Killing the Jane Foster as Thor Idea. No reason to cry really. She could make an appearance in another relaunch/revamp of the Marvel Universe or if sales slump a bit in the new (resurrected/continued numbered) Thor series. Either way though, for now, THIS Thor is about to bite the dust. Remember how InvestComics kept telling readers to chillnax on the buying of this Thor at a premium price? Well, you could’ve put that money somewhere else.
Iron Man Hong Kong Heroes #1 features the introduction of a new ironed suited hero. It also features a new Iron Man suit. Writer Howard Wong and artist Justice Wong.
Look for a possible introduction or two in Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #17.
Incredible Hulk #714, World War Hulk II with Amadeus Cho. Really? Okay.
Many comic shops are still limiting customers to ONE copy of the weekly Avengers storyline “No Surrender”. This week’s Avengers #685 is the continuation of the return of the Immortal Hulk, but if you’re looking for a quick buck or think this comic will be anything worthy of a speculation choice, you’d be hard pressed to prove its worth a year from now, or maybe a month from now.

Venom #163

Well, the time has arrived. One of the most anticipated Spider-Man comics to come out in some time will hit this Wednesday. The “true” first “full” appearance of Red Goblin. Well, we think. He’s right there on the cover, so it should be, right? Maybe this will be the last page cameo deal, with a full cover of Red Goblin and still be considered the “cameo”. Ridiculous, but this is how things work these days. Watch as this comic trends the networks of social media and Ebay. Red Goblin is here and every fanboy, nerd and speculator will let you know about it. Amazing Spider-Man #797 “Go Down Swing” part 1.
The final She-Hulk issue will arrive this Wednesday. She-Hulk #163 will probably leave the proverbial door WIDE open. See how it all ends here though. Should be a great finale. The final issue will be brought to you by, writer Mariko Tamaki and Illustrator Diego Olortegui. See you soon! Maybe later…..maybe in a few years…..who knows?
The infinity stones are all up for grabs….well the power stone really. The Infinity Countdown #1 points readers in the direction of watching many villains and heroes trying to grab the power stone for themselves. Who will wield the power of the infinity power stone? It all starts right here. Go Thanos! Did we say that out loud? Aaron Kuder draws and Gerry Duggan writes. A good one here.

Venom #163 may introduce a new character. Or did they last issue?
Speaking of Venom, Venom vs. Spider-Man #1 (True Believers) comes out with the original Amazing Spider-Man #300 cover. It reprints this issue. Here’s a case where speculators will buy this, get it signed by McFarlane and demand Amazing Spider-Man #300 prices. Don’t do that. Get your money, but don’t start bidding at the 1988 price point. The same goes for Venom: Sybiosis #1 (True Believers), which is the Web of Spider-Man #1 reprint with the original Vess cover. Do not ask for 1985 money.
X-Men Gold #23 will introduce the NEW X-Men Gold team. Already a new team? Only 23 issues in, what the hay hay?
Captain America is headed towards its 700 issue. Check out Captain America #699 this week.
Shade The Changing Woman #1 writer Cecil Castellucci and artists Marley Zarcone and Jamie Coe.

Ghostbusters Annual 2018 (IDW) will introduce Samhain. This villain looks truly bad-as*, check it out. This comic will start the wheels rolling for the massive crossover event coming soon.
Savage Dragon #232 introduces the Wraith. Erik Larsen, still kicking major as* after all these years.
Readers will get to know who Officer Mercer is in The Walking Dead #177. Continuing the “New World Order” (part three) and the introduction of many new characters.

Gotta love the new Gwenpool #25 cover. Anyone with a keen eye will notice that pool and lounge chair right away. Gwenpool “first appeared” on the cover of Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #2 laying down sipping on her drink. Now she’s had enough of that floatation device and is sitting on her on comic books. Great stuff here from cover artist Gurihiru.
Lockjaw #1 will possibility introduce new family members (characters) of Lockjaw to Marvel readers. This number one issue is brought to you by writer Daniel Kibblesmith and artist Carlos Villa.
In the new All-New Wolverine #31 this Wednesday, Gabby will discover something shocking about her past that will send her right into the arms of Deadpool. Writer Tom Taylor and artist Marco Failla bring us this tale.
For all of those still on the Cosmic Ghost Rider train, Thanos #16 will feature the origin of CGR. How far will this character go is anyone’s guess.
X-Men: Blue #22 continues the Venom storyline; Poison X part 4. Now all of the X-Men are in the form of the alien symbiotes. Oh what fun!
Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #300 is an oversized anniversary issue. Creators Chip Zdarsky and Adam Kubert.

Back in 80’s, Marvel had an imprint line called Epic Comics. They managed to crank out some great books. Six From Sirius, Dreadstar, Void Indigo, Alien Legion, just to name a few. In 1985, a six issue mini-series was a bit ahead of its time. It was named “The One”. It was created by Rick Veitch. Rick took care of the writing, penciling, inking, coloring, lettering and the cover art for all six issues. Yes, this was Rick’s baby and he took care of her. Now this week, IDW Publishing will be remastering this masterpiece. Check out The One #1 and see if you’re not riveted.
Black Mask is one of those publishing companies InvestComics speaks about all the time. We speak about them in regards to their great content and their uncanny ability to sell out debut books on a regular basis. Look for that to happen with their new release this week; The Wilds #1. Creators Vita Ayala and Emily Pearson.

DC’s New Age Of Heroes continues this week with a new debut; Sideways #1. This particular character, as every single “New Age Hero” from this line, resembles yet another Marvel character. Sideways looks strikingly similar to Spider-Man. NOT saying this comic is DC’s Spider-Man comic and that Derek James will be bitten by a sideways insect, just looking at the surface here. Breathe fanboys, breathe. The lead character is a high schooler though! The DC solicit says “….with that much power comes great liability….”. A New York City backdrop on the cover…hmmm…um okay. The premise (powers) of leaping from dimension to dimension at will creates the excitement that we won’t be sitting in one place too long as a reader, which is always a good thing. Dan DiDio and Justin Jordan write, Kenneth Rocafort pencils. We’re so on board with this comic, so is our 10-year-old YouTube comic book reviewer Jason Katz.
New Super-Man And The Justice League Of China #20 will start off a new story line “Seas of Change” and will debut a new character.
‘Hacked” part on in Suicide Squad #35. The villain known as Hack returns. First appeared in Suicide Squad #2 (2016).
Things are looking very bleak on the cover of Titans #20. Check out “Titans Apart” part one by Dan Abnett and Paul Pelletier.

Promethea makes her DC Comics Universe debut in Justice League Of America #24 this Wednesday. Formally an America’s Best Comics creation from Alan Moore. It was quite amusing reading all of the fanboy/nerd comments when DC showed off the cover art as it was revealed that Promethea was arriving into the fold of the DCU. Comic book fans could care less as life went on for them, but it was the “others” who were severally distraught over learning of DC’s move here. Well, Alan Moore was probably irked, so the fanboy/nerd had to tag along and act accordingly to try and fit in. Seriously, calm down. It’s DC’s property and they can feel fit to do whatever the heck they want with it. It’s comic books, not the Declaration of Independence. Relax. That all said, if you’re in the market for a good read, check out the original 32 issue series from 1999. Promethea #1 is the first appearance. Last sold on Ebay for about $15.
General Thrawn of Star Wars makes his Marvel Universe debut this week in Star Wars Thrawn #1. We think. Maybe he appeared in some other Marvel Star Wars book we’re not aware of. Maybe in the background on some monitor or a cell phone photo, who knows? These speculators are so desperate to  be the first to correct us or find that first appearance on a cereal box on some panel, so that’s why we’re leaving the door ajar a bit asking if this is indeed his Marvel Comics debut. Anyway, we can tell you that General Thrawn first appeared in a Star Wars Galaxy Magazine #5 in 1995 (Topps Comics). His first “comic book” appearance came in Star Wars: Heir To The Empire #1 (1995) from Dark Horse Comics. If you feel compelled to not recognize any of that banter as the first appearance, then this book here is the first Marvel Universe appearance. If that really means anything at all really. What really matters though are creators Jody Houser and Luke Ross bringing some great story telling.
Ms. Marvel #27, the debut of the Ms. Marvels team? No seriously, take a look.
In the “just saying” department, the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl solicits are the most pretentious, annoying, try-to-hard to sell a comic, drub you can read every month. Always a long diatribe, explaining and trying to be quirky. Stop already. Just sell the book without the added nonsense, sheesh. Okay, just saying rant over. Onward we go….

InvestComics Indie Hot Picks; Indie comics do not always show up on Ebay right way. Please check back on a regular basis, some of the smaller print indie books usually list after new comic book release day or a few days after.
What a long fun ride its’ been for Robert Kirkman’s Invincible character. Making his cameo in Noble Causes Family Secrets #3 (2002) and then his first full appearance in Invincible #1 (2003). A fifteen-year run is an amazing feat. Kudos to Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley and the Image Comics/Skybound team as Invincible #144 will be the last issue this Wednesday. Now onto the small screen or the big screen, animated or live action, we’ll see.
Kick-Ass #1 begins anew once again. Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. are back at the helm to bring readers the mayhem they come to expect. A new Kick-Ass vigilante makes their debut, be sure to check out who it is. Is it someone we may know already or is it someone completely new. Either way, we can’t wait to see and hear Hit-Girl kick some booty!
AfterShock Comics next hit book; Cold War #1. Creators Christopher Sebela and Hayden Sherman.

Stabbity Bunny #1 proved to be a big sell out as we informed you. Now Scout Comics will bring their follow-up; Stabbity Bunny #2. This issue will sell out just like the first did. Better get your hands on one before you’re stuck with a second print instead.
Athena Voltaire #1 (Action Lab); creators Steve Bryant and Ismeal Canales. Also, from Danger Zone come two awesomely crazy books; Baby Badass #1. This craziness is brought to you by D.E. Schrader and Tim Larsen. This looks like a fun ride. And Black Betty #1 from Shawn Gabborin and Michela Da Sacco.

Buy, Sell, Hold – New Mutants #87

One comic is chosen to go under the scope. What is the best course? As a speculator, is it worth buying, selling or holding?
Here are the pros and cons, YOU decide.

New Mutants #87 – 1990 – First appearance of Cable & Stryfe
Writer: Louise Simonson
Art: Rob Liefeld & Bob Wiacek
Inker: Bob Wiacek
Colorist: Mike Rockwitz
Cover Art: Rob Liefeld & Todd McFarlane

PROS: The first appearance of Cable. One of the hottest moderns in today’s market. Cable will appear in the second Deadpool film. With Disney buying Fox Studios, does this mean MORE Cable in the future? A CGC Graded 9.8 sold for $490 on February 4, 2018. The cover is a Rob Liefeld/ Todd McFarlane collaboration.

CONS: According to the CGC census, a total of 5,529 are graded a 9.0 or higher. 836 are CGC Signature Series under this umbrella (9.0 or higher) – The entire total CGC amount graded is 6,504. Not including the 27 restored copies – 1014 total Signature Series – This is not considering any of the CBCS graded and witnessed books (no census) – We must be closing in on the 10k mark here, or have we passed it? – Not a difficult book to find in near mint condition at all – The census here is extremely top heavy – Will the Cable character be a one and done with film? – If so, price will bottom out a bit and a $850/$1200+ signed copy will be substantially lower – When the correction hits the market, this may take a hit due to the abundance availability of this comic and its “easy to find” near mint copies.

What do you think? Is this comic a buy, sell or hold?
