Learn more about the new villain (group); Power Elite in Captain America’s ninth restart. Volume 9; Captain America #1. The new series arrives with at least 20 variants, if not more. So, plenty of covers to choose from. And plenty of beautiful covers that will make their way around the social media circuit.
The Cosmic Ghost Rider character is a hit. Trending at an absurd pace right now. You sitting down? Okay, you sure? Well, recently a first appearance of the Cosmic one in a variant cover Thanos #13, graded CGC 9.8 sold for……..$771+. That’s correct, this is not a misprint. Almost $800 for a comic that is not even a year old yet. Six months old to be exact. Six months old…..let that sink in. Another reason why InvestComics had to move on. This is absurdity. Anyway, the first solo comic will hit with a fervor. Look for a tremendous interest in the variant covers as this comic sells out quickly. The trend will hit hard as fans show off their booty all over Instagram and Facebook. Writer Donny Cates and artist Dylan Burnett bring the new age Ghost Rider to comic shops this Wednesday; Cosmic Ghost Rider #1.
The question Marvel ponders, ‘What to do with the Inhumans television disaster?’ Simple, you kill them off in a comic book series. Well, they say they will and as the title states; Death Of The Inhumans #1, but we all know it will not really happen. But that said, with the likes of one of the hottest comic writers on the planet right now Donny Cates and renowned artist Ariel Olivetti, this comic will kick some major as*. And what’s with the variant cover with ‘VOX’? Is that a revamp Vox character from Avengers The Initiative #7 (first appearance- 2008) or a new VOX altogether? Either way, very appealing.

Marvel’s revered Star Wars series hits a milestone this Wednesday; Star Wars #50. What surprises are in store here? A must get for Star Wars fans and collectors alike.
From our calculations, The Russian Winter Guard team was last seen in Monsters Unleashed #2 very recently. The time before this was in 2015, when Marvel was still in a bitter stalemate with Fox Studios over the Fantastic Four, X-Men, etc. Fantastic Four #643 in 2015 was the last scene appearance before their recent stint. The Winter Guard first appeared in Iron Man (Vol.3) #9 in 1998. Okay, now that’s out of the way, The Winter Guard make an appearance this week in Weapon X #20.
Marvel Rising Squirrel Girl And Ms. Marvel #1; Writers Ryan North, G.Willow Wilson and Devin Grayson. Artists Ramon Bachs and Irene Strychalski.

Batman #50 Cake Variant

The wedding of the century has arrived. Batman #50 brings fans, media and social media to a frenzy as Batman weds Catwoman. Will this marriage stand the test of time? We’ll have to wait and see, but for now we’re all invited to a wedding, so let’s all wish the couple a prosperous life together. As expected, lots and lots of variants accompany the release.
With the wedding comes something new correct? How about Catwoman #1 from writer/artist Joelle Jones. Yes, this is a great wedding gift for comic fans, thank you Joelle….and DC. We appreciate it.
Is Damian Wayne really Slade Wilson’s son? Or is he really Batman’s son? Find out what and who and possibly why in Deathstroke #33.

Domino #1 – Gail Simone writes this bad as* new series for Marvel. Look for this comic to trend big within the social media outlets and the aftermarket on Ebay to pop a bit regarding the variant covers. Writer Gail Simone brings it every single time on any book she writes. Domino will be the answer to DC’s Harley, but an obviously vastly different character altogether. More in the vain of popularity. David Baldeon will take care of the art duties. It’s Domino’s time now…..
Haunted High-Ons  – This indie comic from Source Point Press is sold out on the distributor level. Writer Dirk Manning and artist Alessandro De Fornassari.
Champions #19 – A possible intro of a new hero.
Exiles #1 – The first Exiles series from 2001 went a 100 issue run. Not too shabby. The number one issue here will introduce readers to the new Valkyrie. Creators Saladin Ahmed and Javier Rodriguez.
Captain America #700 – Marvel introduces us to KING Captain America.

Despicable Deadpool #298 promises to carry a whole mess of villains in this action packed ‘go kill Deadpool, there’s a bounty on his head for $20 million’.
Champions #19 gives way to ‘the birth of a new hero’. This according to Marvel, so who knows what this may mean exactly.
If there was a spot here for the comic that’ll trend the most this week, Domino #1 would win that spot this week. Why? Well, three reasons. One, she’s a bad as* character. Two, she’s appearing in the new Deadpool movie. Three, she’s a bad as*. Well, maybe two reasons, but hey, get your own website if you want to list more reasons. Big collector dispute for a while as to where Domino first appeared. Was it New Mutants #98? X-Force #1? X-Force #4? X-Force #8? Marvel Age #102? Oh where oh where can art thou be? Well, the grading companies, not the hobbyist, settled the dispute and listed the ‘REAL’, yes, CGC actually lists ‘The REAL….’ On their upper right-hand notes, but that’s another chat some other time. So, the REAL first appearance of Domino is………(drum roll please!)…….X-Force #11 (1992). That long winded explanation was completely unnecessary, but fun nonetheless. Domino #1 brought to you by the writer Gail Simone and artist David Baldeon.
Marvel debuted the original Exiles #1 back in 2001. The series lasted seven years and 100 issues. That’s a nice run. Marvel will try their hand with a new run with Exiles #1 this Wednesday. This number one issue will introduce the new Valkyrie. Creators Saladin Ahmed and Javier Rodriguez.

It seems every week now one of Marvel’s original characters is hitting a milestone issue. Considering the fact many of them came out at the same time and the original numbering coming back, so yea, makes some sense. This week Marvel celebrates Captain America #700. That’s some serious numbering. And of course, many variants to choose from here, but it looks as though Marvel wants to ‘crown’ Captain America with a new name. ‘KING’ Captain America. No seriously, no joke. April fools is long gone.
Is Star Wars Thrawn #3 the intro of Arihnda Pryce in comics?

DC introduces a new team to their library this Wednesday. Immortal Men #1. An all star creative team will keep interest on this comic this week. Watch to see if the word gets out on this being an interesting team to follow via social media and chatter at your local comic shop. James Tynion IV writes and Jim Lee handles the pencils.

Buy, Sell, Hold – Werewolf By Night #32

One comic is chosen to go under the scope. What is the best course? As a speculator, is it worth buying, selling or holding?
Here are the pros and cons, YOU decide.

Werewolf By Night #321975
Writer: Doug Moench
Art: Don David Perlin
Inker: Howie Perlin
Cover Art: Gil Kane & Al Milgrom

PROS: The first appearance and origin of Moon Knight – The first appearance of right-hand man ‘Frenchie’ – An extremely valuable commodity in the aftermarket. An 8.5 CGC graded recently SOLD for $930+. This is an extremely high-priced sale for a character not considered to be an A-lister. A RAW copy sold for $700+ a couple of days later (see ‘cons’) – A constant rumored to be character from every television studio to movie studio to see live action (see ‘cons’) – IF Moon Knight ever does see the light of day, with SOLID news/confirmation of a live action, this comic will be aftermarket gold – A much revered cult followed character – A Gil Kane/Al Milgrom cover – Dubbed Marvel’s “White Knight” from comic fans – A part of the West Coast Avengers team at one point –  A Bronze Age comic – Constant upward ticks over years makes this comic very desirable. InvestComics recommended this comic 12 years ago and thru-out the years since. The comic was able to be bought in certain area’s for $100 at the time we first mentioned.

CONS: There are a total of 1873 graded copies (CGC Census). Out of those copies, 580 are graded 9.0 or higher. This is NOT including a CBCS Census (no data). NM copies are readily available out there and CBCS has not been factored in here – Rumors have been bound for a couple of years now, but have been getting particularly stronger more recently,  which means absolutely nothing – Rumors are not a stable environment for long-term investments. Markets need validity, balance and hard copy to proceed in the correct direction. If rumors continue, it will be a score for the seller. If rumors cease and or studios do not make a move (announcement), look for a possible major correction on this comic. RAW copies will take a major hit as graded books will wane away – As a non A-list Marvel character a $700 sale for a RAW copy is a bit of an aggressive stance for any speculator at this point.

What do you think? Is this comic a buy, sell or hold?

From the InvestComics Moon Knight Checklist

Werewolf By Night #33 (1975) Second appearance.
Marvel Spotlight #28 (1976) First solo book. Legendary writer Doug Moench on this book and long time penciler Don Perlin. A must for any Moon Knight collector here. Several first appearances in here.
Moon Knight #1 (1980) His first solo/self titled book. Bill Sienkiewicz art. First appearance of Bushman, Khonshu and Dr. Peter Alraune. Origin of Moon Knight  part 1. Also Sienkiewicz cover art.
Marc Spector Moon Knight #55 (1993) The first definitive Moon Knight artist. Legend Bill Sienkiewicz was amazing, but Stephen Platt took the character look to a whole new level. This is the Miller Dark Knight, the McFarlane Spidey, the Simonson Thor, etc. The first defining artist moment in Moon Knight history is right here. The second comes later. Too bad Stephen wasn’t enough at the time to save this series from its demise a short time later. The first published work of Stephen Platt.

InvestComics Spider-Man Checklist – Part 1 – Click Image

Writer Peter David and artist Mark Bagley bring the fan favorite clone Ben Reilly into his own on-going series; Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #1. Ben Reilly has a few ‘first appearances’ to look at. Amazing Spider-Man #149 (1975) is the first Spider-Clone appearance. It also happens to be Gwen Stacy’s clone origin as well. Maybe we’ll get a Spider-Gwen clone one day and this comic will be in even more demand. Web of Spider-Man #118 (1994); First appearance as Scarlet Spider. The first appearance as Spider-Man; Sensational Spider-Man #0 (1996). That’s it, those are key Ben Reilly books. If you truly believe in this character, these are the books to own. There is a funny thing we noticed about the Mark Bagley (regular cover). Some of the solicits have Scarlet Spider with a hood on and some don’t. Is this a thing? Maybe just an update of the cover solicits (with or without the hood). Either way, maybe be on the look-out for it?

Click on the RED links, Images or the comic cover to buy/bid from All available sellers on Ebay.

Old Man Logan ‘Wolverine’ continues revisiting his past and dealing with the present as he takes on Wendigo and The Hulk for old times sake. Old Man Logan #22, written by Jeff Lemire and art by Eric Nguyen. The cover(s) from this storyline are depicting the old comics from yesteryear behind Wolverine and we love it. Cover for Old Man Logan #22 from Andrea Sorrentino.

Buy Now-No Bidding – Graded Flash Comics $40 and Less – Click Image

DC and Dynamite Entertainment team up as Batman teams up with The Shadow this Wednesday. Writer’s Scott Snyder/Steve Orlando and artist Riley Rossmo are on the case. The two legendary comic characters reunite for the first time since a team-up stint in 1974’s Batman #259. They teamed up for the first time ever in Batman #253 (1973). Two classic books which would make for a nice addition to your collection. Batman The Shadow #1 will feature a first appearance of a new villain. More of a reason to check out this comic.

The 4 part ‘The Button’ story continues this week in Flash #21 (part 2). While we love the lenticular cover(s), we repeat, we love the lenticular cover(s), be careful of the speculative nonsense that may follow it from various sources getting on the hype train. Do not over pay for these covers. We have explained these reasons regarding variant comic book covers (special covers) throughout our Hot Picks post within the last couple of years, but in case you missed it, here it goes again. Again, we love the variant covers as much as the next fan that appreciates great art, but there is one thing a collector must keep in mind when buying the variant lenticular cover(s) coming out as part of the DC gimmick this week. The guts. If the inside of this comic has no significance within the grand scope of things for the next 2 to 5 years, then guess what? You have a pretty cover……that’s it. Again, if you like a variant cover, you should buy it, We encourage it because nice art is nice art, we get that, but do not have the thinking you are ‘investing’ or speculating on a comic that will serve any relevance in years to come. We pointed out in many of our articles to do the grading test with CGC and CBCS. If you see a nice variant cover (signed maybe too?) that is ‘rare’ and has an asking price of $150 or $300 or even $75, you should look at the top right hand corner of the graded book. Shift the eyes there. Empty? Blank? Does it say ‘Joker appearance’? ‘Harley Quinn appearance’? Well if your modern variant says only that or something similar and not ‘First appearance’ or ‘Cameo (first appearance)’, then you have been duped into the hype market. A ‘rare’ modern variant cover or a special glow in the dark/3D/lenticular comic come with the SAME guts as 10,000 other comics with a ‘regular’ cover and is basically a non-factor in the grand scheme of things. If there was a ‘rare’ modern variant/glow in the dark/lenticular of New Mutants #98, well you’re on to something. The guts have significance. The Flash #21 Lenticular cover, if it’s graded a 9.8, guess what you have, you have a neat gimmick cover that will probably state in the right hand corner; ‘The Button story begins. Jason Fabok Lenticular cover.’ (This of course is all on assuming that there is ‘no significant’ feature in this book.) As a speculator, if you’re willing to pluck down serious cash for a 9.8, then by all means do so if you think the resale value will exceed what you paid for it. If you’re looking for a collector’s piece to just hold onto, get it signed and graded yourself and enjoy it. The variant market is completely skewed right now. The horse blinders are on. Collectors of modern books must refocus. The guts, the guts matter, not just a nice cover when it comes to resale value. A nice cover will rarely sustain or outrun the first appearance book or a book of significance. Some may say, but what about the Watchmen element being thrown into the DCU right now regarding Flash #21? Isn’t that a big factor? Well yes and no. Yes for now and no for longevity. Do you really think DC will hold this Watchmen twist into its lure? Another ‘relaunch’ in 4 years perhaps? If you think this may not happen, you must be new to this sport. The guts, the guts, the guts. The end.

CBCS President Steve Borock

screenhunter_727-nov-21-13-57

sborockBreaking news from BleedingCool.com has many comic fans feeling a bit emotional about what recently occurred. CGC has become the exclusive grader at C2E2 and Emerald City Comic Con. Meaning that the ‘other’ grading company; CBCS is not allowed to set up within the confines of those buildings. A bit startling for many fans of CBCS to say the least. We reached out to the president and primary grader of CBCS, Steve Borock, to see what he thinks.

InvestComics: Hi Mr. Borock, How’s it going these days?

Fantastic, thanks! That said, please call me Steve, as I am just another hobbyist with a great gig.

(IC): Great, Steve it is! Let’s jump right into the news this past week. It seems to many onlookers that CGC is monopolizing the market from a business point. They signed an exclusive deal with ReedPop as the exclusive grading company at two conventions; C2E2 and ECCC through 2019. What does this mean for CBCS not being able to provide a service at these shows for their customers that choose CBCS and not CGC as their go to grading company?

(SB) Well, first, the “onlookers” are absolutely correct. CGC, with the help of ReedPop, are trying to monopolize the market under the guise of “This is what collectors want.” This is untrue from the comments on social media, the emails CBCS and CGC have received, and the collectors and sellers I have talked with. In my humble opinion, it’s an “anti-trust” lawsuit just waiting to happen. If ReedPop wants to name our competitor their official grading service and want them to be the ones doing “On-site” grading, that’s fine, but banning CBCS from the floor of their shows is not healthy for our hobby or what many people want.

star_wars_1_investcomics-1nm98To answer your other question, this does not mean that the collecting community will not have a choice. We will be making a big announcement very soon about how the sellers and collectors who only want to certify their comic books through CBCS at these shows will be able to do so.

(IC): Do you foresee a ‘slab war’ as some fans are calling it or is there enough room for everyone?

(SB) The term “Slab wars” is just hype. Period. It’s divisive and not healthy for our great hobby. We all grew up reading about good verses evil, no one wants a “war” except people who feed on that kind of thing. I do not and CBCS does not. There is room for everyone and everyone should have choices. CGC (the company I helped create) wants to be the only game in town, and they realize they now have real competition for the first time since they opened. They are afraid, and once again, in my opinion, are afraid because they no longer own the entire market, but just a huge chunk of it. They have never had enough genuine concern about another grading service before, because those companies were not composed of real specialists and true hobbyists with the ethics and a love for our hobby that CBCS has.

screenhunter_727-nov-21-13-55(IC): Would CBCS ever sign an exclusive deal with a particular convention(s) as a means to ensure that you’re not left on the outside looking in?

(SB) We have been asked before if we want to have CGC left out of a convention and have always said “No.” As I stated before, we at CBCS are true hobbyists that believe collectors and sellers should have choices. Picture your local supermarket as a convention. You don’t walk in and just see Coke, you also see Pepsi, RC Cola, and more. People want choices and the conventions should give them the choices they want.

Look, this is a “David vs Goliath” scenario, except this time Goliath (CGC) is afraid of David (CBCS), not the other way around.

(IC): With a recent bump in the proverbial road for CGC, the ‘you won’t like the results….’, what is your take on that?

(SB) I think it was a pretty strange thing to state and a very clear look into how CGC feels and works. I will let the collecting community make up their own minds about those statements. Our community is smart enough to read between the lines.

(IC): Knowing that bashing another company is never beneficial for any professional outfit, which CBCS does not do and we respect CBCS as a company as we do CGC, we ask you, why should a potential customer prefer CBCS over CGC as their grading company of choosing?

web-of-spider-man(SB) Because we are better! (laughs) Really, it’s a matter of choice and trust. We have some of the most knowledgeable and honest hobbyists in the world working at CBCS. Our holder is crystal clear and archival safe. We care about every comic that comes in the door, whether it’s worth $100,000 or just a dollar, because that comic means something to the owner, and we respect that.

AS to you first question, here’s the deal…. CBCS never bashes CGC because it’s bad for business and for our hobby. Hell, When people come over to the CBCS booth at conventions with magazines and Undergrounds, books we do not certify yet, we do one of two things: Walk them over to CGC or send them over to CGC.

(IC): So what’s coming down the pike for CBCS? Where can we meet the crew next and beyond?

(SB) There are a bunch of things we are working on at the moment, but we want to announce them when the time is right and not give our esteemed competition a “Head’s up”.

As to where and when you can meet and talk to the CBCS crew, there will be many, many chances in the coming year.

This Thanksgiving weekend I am giving up my vacation to fly out to “I Like Comics” in Washington state (Great store!) for a charity event to meet and greet with other hobbyists this Friday & Saturday and raise money for comic artist Rebecca Woods. I really dig doing charity work in our hobby and have been doing so for many, many years. We can all be superheroes in our own way.

CBCS will be doing most major conventions through the next year and even many small shows. Keep an eye on our website (www.cbcscomics.com) and our Facebook page (CBCScomics) for all the events and conventions we will be doing. Our “News & Events” page is updated as soon as we confirm a show appearance.

(IC): Thank you Steve, we’ll see you soon!

Each week InvestComics seeks out a comic(s) on Ebay for $100 or less and then brings it to the attention of our fans. We call it IC 100 Club Pick. The idea is to get a great book at a great price. We do not own nor are we selling these comics. The comics are found by a random process. We do not know the ebay seller(s), nor are we promoting the Ebay seller. Any knowing from the Ebay seller of InvestComics or its affiliates is purely coincidental. (See disclaimer for more details).

IC 100 Club Pick: Incredible Hulk #100 (CGC 9.8). We’ve been saying it for years and years. Planet Hulk will be a factor on the big screen and the comic book market (already has). This $99 higher grade comic will be double its value, easily, once Planet Hulk comes more into light as becoming a reality of a blockbuster movie. That is all. Buy it soon, a few collectors are watching it.

Before reading ahead, we feel we need to warn you that our articles contain very harsh truths in them. Not vulgar language, just a good solid dose of honesty. They always have, they always will. If you are easily offended, cannot come to terms that other people have opinions too beside yourself and especially if you’re a fanboy, discontinue reading. Go back to the other places selling you the farm. This is NOT the place for you. We’re here to have fun and not lie to you. Thank you and enjoy!

Hillbilly #2 – Eric Powell has a hit on his hands. Both Hillbilly #1 and this new issue coming on Wednesday are sold out.

4001 AD War Mother #1 – Did you know that Valiant Entertainment was nominated for the most Harvey Awards this year? That’s a tremendous feat and we congratulate them. This week, Valiant introduces a new character to their family, War Mother.

Dishonored #1 – Titans Comics. Completely sold out. All variants and regular cover. It should probably be on your “check it out list” on new comic book day.

Harley Quinn #1 – Another Harley Quinn restart and most likely another successful launch. InvestComics has FOUR exclusive Harley Quinn #1 comics we’re giving away. Must check that out right HERE.

Kill or Be Killed #1 – New Image Comic from Ed Brubaker. A must read this Wednesday.
